RELATIONSHIP WITH SED CSArch has close working relationships with the New York State Education Department (SED) Office of Facilities Planning and its personnel. Our Albany office is within walking distance to their building, allowing us to meet face-to-face with their project managers and reviewers and hand deliver all project submissions. We regularly advise SED on the latest codes, rules and regulations, and are a preferred third-party reviewer of capital project submissions from other firms (for both architecture and engineering). MAXIMIZING STATE BUILDING AID From decades of experience in completing complex public education building projects of all sizes, CSArch is a recognized expert in maximizing state building aid and successfully developing capital projects. In addition to guiding our clients to fully understand all of the variables affecting building aid, our firm often serves as an advisor to other A/E professional service firms. SCHOOL SAFETY Enhancing school safety and security is a top priority for our districts and communities. BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING At CSArch, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a focus on the sharing of information over the life of the project. As Executive Principal, Dan brings nearly 30 years of experience in the design and management of education facilities, corporate, and community projects. He is responsible for facilitating the project scope, conceptual planning, design and quality control. Recognized for his strong leadership and communication skills, Dan contributes to both project and business excellence. Dan has leadership responsibilities in business operations, strategic planning, marketing, and human resources.
Rich’s experience includes overseeing quality control, code reviews, design, construction documentation, specifications, cost estimating, and construction administration. Rich has fostered a relationship with many colleagues at the State Education Department and has deep knowledge of their standards. Rich helps our clients maximize state building aid, and works closely with financial advisors prior to the public vote to determine the maximum cost allowance and projected building aid for each facility.
Tom has over 27 years of experience in the design and project management of educational facilities. Having served with two NYS public school districts as Director of Facilities and Transportation and as an Associate Architect, Tom has first-hand experience of the challenges and issues facing public facilities in the maintenance, operations and expansion of physical plants. His work in private practice, paired with positions as architect in major NY educational systems, gives experience on both sides of design and construction projects.

Legacy 2020 Capital Project
Queensbury UFSD // Queensbury, New York
Beginning in 2013, Queensbury Union Free School District underwent an extensive, multi-step planning process to transform its rigid, mid-century high school into a modern learning institution. Coined the Legacy 2020 Capital Project, the $39.7 million high school redesign completely modernized existing space to enhance educational programming, increase the usability of community spaces, and allow for greater collaboration among students and facility. The goal to enhance educational programming resulted in the formation of three interdisciplinary instructional communities: Humanities, STEM, and Fine and Performing Arts. Each community includes extended learning spaces and Tier 3 classrooms dispersed throughout, designed to foster collaboration and creativity with soft, flexible seating and integrated technology. The main facade incorporates stone and wood building materials and textures that reflect the surrounding Adirondacks, complemented with large windows and perforated panels to modernize the school’s exterior and provide clear sight lines into the secure vestibule and lobby. The replacement of inefficient windows and the installation of floor-to-ceiling glass throughout the building added much needed natural light in every space, increasing overall energy performance.

FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS In the Fine and Performing Arts community, band, orchestra, and chorus each have their own teaching and rehearsal space. Art instruction is conducted in studios with natural light, high ceilings, and visual connectivity between spaces, reflective of a professional artist’s environment.

HUMANITIES Humanities classrooms put learning on display with corridor wall glazing and promote active learning with multiple teaching walls, projectors, and write-on surfaces.
STEM The STEM learning community is a hub for technology and collaboration, including a state-of-the-art innovation lab, media and video production classroom, robotics lab and shared makerspaces. Flexible furniture encourages students to work collaboratively in groups and allows teachers to design their classrooms around specific lessons.
PUBLIC/EVENT SPACE To control the flow of visitor traffic and separate instructional space from community space, the community room, media center, gallery and student support services are purposefully situated off the main entrance. The media center is directly visible from the gallery, featuring floorto-ceiling glass to establish the space as a focal point and add more natural light to inside spaces.
Center for Advanced Technology Mohonasen CSD // Schenectady, New York
The Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) is a new state-of-the-art building at Mohonasen Central School District. The approximately 53,000 square foot learning facility is home to a variety of modern, high-tech labs and classrooms that offer learning experiences in “real world” work environments. Existing through a partnership between Mohonasen Central School District, Schenectady County Community College, and Capital Region BOCES, the Center for Advanced Technology is a multi-user educational facility. Welcoming K12 students from more than 20 school districts in addition to college students and adult leaders, the facility aligns with the region’s priorities to build a skilled workforce pipeline for local industries. The center houses Mohonasen’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs – a group of hands-on, project-based courses that combine classroom learning with real-world experiences – as well as some Capital Region BOCES CTE programs that brings in high school students from across the region. In the future, the facility will also be used for both credit-bearing and workforce development/adult education programs through local community colleges.

The Center For Advanced Technology The unique programming required the design team to create a truly flexible purpose learning environment to serve multiple disciplines and demographics. The facility and spaces within support different programs and offer an interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to learning that is integral to STEM education for traditional students and adult learners. The building includes an electric lab, a manufacturing and machining lab, a wood shop, a media arts lab, a high-end graphics computer lab, a nanotechnology lab with a simulated “clean room,” a welding lab, and health professions labs.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Modern, specialized laboratories introduce students to collegiate and real-world work environments while meeting the multidisciplinary needs of college credit-bearing and workforce development programs. The Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen has the potential to truly change the career trajectory of many local high school, college, and adult learners.
CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION The CAT hosts four Career and Technical Education programs, as well as Mohonasen’s Mo-Tech — a group of hands-on, project-based courses that combine classroom learning with real-world experiences. The facility leads both credit-bearing and workforce development/ adult education programs through Schenectady County Community College.
High School Redesign
City School District of Albany // Albany, New York The City School District of Albany faces a critical need to raise achievement for all students and significantly increase graduation rates. Its high school is in an aging facility on a campus that does not incorporate critical academic programs such as career and technical education, or outdoor facilities for most varsity athletic teams. Driving the project is a mission to improve the student experience, offer new opportunities for learning and engagement, and address the ever-evolving needs of 21st century education. The redesign encompasses renovations to approximately 300,400 sf of existing space and nearly 242,600 sf of new construction to support a projected enrollment increase of 3,000 students.

ACADEMIC BUILDING ADDITION A new three-story, 120,000 square-foot academic building behind the original school is a major element of Phase 1. Classroom design will support active learning with flexible furniture to enable classroom rearrangement and support individual or team-based clusters. Color, lighting and transparency brighten classrooms to create visual connectivity.
ART AND MUSIC ADDITION Phase 2 features the construction of a twostory, 39,000 square foot Art and Music building addition at the front of the high school. Art classrooms will mirror studio spaces with large windows for natural light, modular group tables, and high ceilings. Music students will have a designated instruction and rehearsal space with new instrument storage and acoustic treatments for optimal sound quality.
CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) Phase 3 includes new CTE spaces to provide hands-on education for students interested in Automotive Technical Services and Building Trades. Learning opportunities enable students to develop academic, technical and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement.
Capital Project
Pawling CSD // Pawling, New York
Following an extensive planning and visioning process involving students, teachers, faculty, parents, and community members, Pawling CSD voters approved a $47.8 million capital improvement project. The project addresses high priority infrastructure upgrades that were identified in the district’s Building Condition Survey, completed by CSArch, including site and parking improvements, HVAC system upgrades, plumbing, electrical and lighting improvements, and a roof replacement at Pawling Middle School. CSArch is working with The ECG Group to develop an Energy Performance Contract that will fund $1.9 million of the critical infrastructure improvements. A new multi-purpose, synthetic turf athletic field and track will provide a modernized facility for a variety of sports programs. At the high school, the existing woodshop will be relocated to make way for a new two-tiered cafeteria and servery line with access to an outdoor dining area. The existing cafeteria will be renovated to create a new band room, featuring instrument storage, office space, and practice rooms.

STEAM PROGRAMMING A new technology addition at the high school will provide an integrated woodshop and computer design lab, allowing students to engage in handson learning from design through fabrication.
ATHLETIC FIELD A multi-purpose athletic field and track, bleachers, and press box will provide modernized facility for football, soccer, lacrosse, track and field, and field hockey. The field is designed with a synthetic turf surface for easy maintenance, extended use, and enhanced safety.
FOOD SCIENCE + AGRICULTURE The food science and agriculture classrooms at the middle school will be renovated and expanded to integrate student opportunities with a working greenhouse, proper plant growth systems, and visual connectivity between spaces to support a true farm-to-table learning environment.

Coxsackie-Athens CSD // Coxsackie, New York Driven by the 21st century educational programming, this capital project modernized school facilities to more closely match the district’s STEAM programming goals by addressing new student needs, catering to various learning styles, and combining social and educational experiences.
At the center of the campus, an existing building was reconstructed and expanded to house a new library/media center. The “CASH” Bar located at the center of the library offers tech support and group study, and a new makerspace equipped with a 3D printer encourages hands-on creativity and problem solving. Students gather in this space to engage in experiential projects that inspire their natural curiosity and ability to solve problems. The technology classrooms received extensive renovations, making way for a new Dream Fab, which is comprised of seven distinct spaces all interconnected to allow movement and support continuity from design to fabrication.

Vision 2020 Capital Project Marlboro CSD // Milton, New York
Marlboro Central School District’s capital project will optimize educational space, address key infrastructure deficiencies, and improve health/safety issues. At the high school, improvements include renovations to the nursing suite, cafeteria, student support services, art studios, music and athletics. Middle school renovations include an innovation lab and technology classroom, a new studio art room and adjacent graphic arts lab, nursing suite, cafeteria, and a new orchestra/ music addition. All lobbies will receive new secure vestibules, greeting stations, and main office updates.

FLEXIBLE MAKERSPACES At the middle school, makerspaces will be designed through a new innovation lab and technology classroom that supports 21st century STEAM learning. The makerspaces will allow students to collaborate with peers, employ critical thinking, and be creative in a flexible environment.
VISUAL ARTS The high school art suite will mirror a collegiate or studio art setting, encouraging creative expression, with adequate storage, proper natural light, and an adjacent graphic arts lab.
STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES Student support services at the middle school and high school will be consolidated to provide an open, optimized layout for counselors with common meeting/conferencing areas and appropriate records storage.
Capital Project
Pearl River CSD // Pearl River, New York Pearl River School District has partnered with CSArch to implement various capital improvement projects, including improvements to the athletic facilities. The project included the construction of a new concession building, press box, bleachers, storage building and the installation of new score boards for the baseball and football fields. In addition, CSArch has become the architect of record for the district, and has taken over projects at both the middle and high schools to provide addition and renovation work to upgrade the gymnasiums, science classrooms, music and art suites, and other infrastructure improvements.

ATHLETIC FIELDS Featuring facilities for tennis, football, track, soccer, and baseball, the consolidated complex makes athletics a focal point of the campus. The use of synthetic turf sustains harsh weather, reduces maintenance costs, and provides a safe and stable surface for athletes. To supplement the track and turf field, a new concession building, press box, storage facility, field lighting, and bleachers were constructed, including an increased seating count and enhanced accessibility.
Capital Project
New Rochelle CSD // New Rochelle, New York The capital project will be completed in four phases and includes improvements to building exterior envelopes, site improvements, interior systems and building systems infrastructure. At New Rochelle High School, a new turf football field, softball fied and running track provides much needed field space for multi-purpose outdoor activities. Infrastrucure improvments at the High School included the repair and restoration of the slate roof and overall improvements to parking lots and entrances. Work at Isaac E. Young Middle School included exterior restoration of decorative cast stone elements, roof repair and improvements to the loading dock. At Jefferson Elementary School, exterior restorations included brick replacement and terra-cotta restoration along with site improvements to building entrances.

EXTERIOR ENVELOPE CSArch restored or replaced slate roofs, masonry, historic façade, window and door systems at several school buildings throughout the district.
BUILDING SYSTEM INFRASTRUCTURE Building infrastructure improvements included replacement of HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems. Oil tanks were replaced and new generators installed.
SITE DESIGN Site work includes improved parking and controlled building access, as well as new field lighting and artificial turf replacement at the high school athletic complex.

Clarkstown CSD // Clarkstown, New York
Clarkstown CSD partnered with CSArch to develop a district-wide infrastructure and capital improvement project totaling more than $36 million. Through extensive building and site investigations, programming and financial modeling, CSArch created a comprehensive improvement plan and bond referendum for the district. Critical infrastructure improvements performed at Clarkstown include roof replacements, boiler replacements, and electrical service replacements. The project was phased over three consecutive years focusing on summer construction periods with the first phase completed in August 2017.

ROOF REPLACEMENTS Totaling over 840,000 square feet, the project included roof repairs and replacements at nearly every district building.
MASONRY RECONSTRUCTION CSArch performed a historic exterior masonry reconstruction project at Congers Elementary School. The project involved replacement of the entire gymnasium wall construction, replacement of the terra cotta masonry facade, as well as steel, window, and roofing replacement.

South Glens Falls CSD // South Glens Falls, New York South Glens Falls Central School District completed a $57.8 million capital project to advance and improve instructional programming, health and safety, ADA compliance, security measures, energy efficiencies, and technology infrastructure in its school facilities. The district-wide capital project includes an eight-classroom addition at the high school and a six-classroom addition at Ballard Elementary School to accommodate the growing student population. The project also features expanded library media centers and renovations to music and art classrooms at Ballard and Tanglewood Elementary Schools, two new tennis courts, a basketball court, and a resurfaced track. Site and building maintenance improvements include new roofing, windows, doors and flooring across all six school buildings. A combined transportation and operations/maintenance facility was constructed on the site of the lower bus garage on Harrison Avenue to address health and safety concerns and update and enlarge the space.

HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE ADDITION The 19,360 sf, eight classroom addition seamlessly connects to the original high school and provides enlarged chemistry, biology, and physics classrooms. Each classroom features a “greenhouse corner” which promotes hands-on learning and brings in plenty of natural light.
TANGLEWOOD MEDIA CENTER Renovations to the existing library converted the dated space into a modern, collaborative media center. A new makerspace with views into the library allows students to explore their natural curiosity and engage with various technologies.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ADDITION The addition at Ballard Elementary added six new 21st century classrooms, equipped with multiple teaching walls and various seating styles to easily reconfigure the space. Lighting upgrades automatically adjust based on the amount of natural light a room receives, enhancing energy efficiency and cost savings.
NEW TRANSPORTATION FACILITY Part of the project was the construction of a new $12.9 million transportation facility to house the Transportation and Facilities and Operations Departments under one roof. The new DOTcompliant facility was constructed at a new site on Harrison Avenue and addresses health and safety concerns while also enhancing efficiencies at the district by consolidating services for the Transportation and Facilities Departments. North Colonie CSD // Latham, New York North Colonie CSD is undergoing a district-wide capital project focused on addressing an ongoing enrollment crunch at the elementary level, where classrooms have surpassed capacity in certain buildings. Because studies concluded that the district’s enrollment will increase by more than 900 students over the next decade, the project will build space to accommodate the increase, including additions and renovations work at the elementary schools and the conversion of the Shaker Junior High School to a 6-8 middle school. The project will also expand the library/media centers, multi-use labs for science, engineering, robotics, computing, and other project-based learning classrooms at all elementary schools.
At Shaker Junior High School, a new hall was constructed for grades 6-8, creating additional technology, music, and art classrooms. The cafeteria will also be expanded along with a renovation to the existing auditorium. Student services has also been moved to the front of the building. Various improvements will be made to the overall infrastructure and to the project site to alleviate traffic congestion.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ADDITION A new two-story classroom addition was constructed at Shaker Middle School to accomodate grades 6-8. Each hall was purposefully assigned a unique color scheme with general classrooms, science classrooms, and innovation labs to establish familiarity and manage increasing student enrollment.
CAFETERIA ADDITION A new cafeteria at the middle school will accommodate increasing student enrollment and features flexible furniture options intended for socialization. A new servery line with updated equipment and appliances will alleviate congestion and improve flow between spaces.
ATHLETIC IMPROVEMENTS The new turf field allows for use by various sporting programs. The use of synthetic turf acts as a natural shock absorber to create a safe and stable surface for athletes and increase savings on maintenance costs. A new concession building separates the field from the 8 new tennis courts, consolidating the athletic complex to improve space utilization.

Ichabod Crane CSD // Valatie, New York In December 2018, voters approved a capital improvement project at Ichabod Crane CSD that will modernize existing facilities, improve educational and athletic programs, and address health, safety and infrastructure concerns across all student-occupied buildings. Improvements at the high school include auditorium renovations to modernize the space and improve lighting and sound technologies, as well as STEAM classroom improvements and the creation of a new student support suite. Middle school classroom wings require renovations to fit the needs of 21st century classroom design by promoting collaboration, connectivity and flexibility. Secure entrances will be designed at all school buildings in order to provide a single entry point that allows administrators to clearly see who enters and exits the building. Bullet-proof windows and a sophisticated lock system will give students and faculty a feeling of safety in the event of an emergency.

TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING ADDITION The existing high school will be reconfigured to support the district’s STEAM program, allowing for a new technology and engineering addition. The addition will include a transportation and materials shop, wood shop, two innovation labs, and a CNC fabrication classroom.
SCIENCE RENOVATIONS In the science wing, biology, physics, chemistry and earth science classrooms will be renovated to support hands-on learning. Flexible furniture and new lab stations will allow teachers to organize their classrooms to support a variety of lessons.
ATHLETICS IMPROVEMENTS The project will renovate and expand the gymnasium within the building’s footprint to better accommodate the school’s physical education and athletics programs, allowing for increased bleacher seating and storage space.

East Greenbush CSD // East Greenbush, New York Secure entrances were designed for all student-occupied buildings to include a single, well-defined main entry point. Staff can now clearly observe the lobby, entry, surrounding hallways, as well as the drop-off and parking area to ensure student safety. In six of the district’s seven school buildings additional cafeteria and kitchen renovations have taken place, new secure entrances have been designed, and technology and temperature controls have been upgraded to better serve students and ensure increased safety.

SECURE ENTRANCES AND VESTIBULES All student-occupied buildings were improved with new secure entrances, greeter stations, and advanced lock and alarm systems to control building access. Main office updates now give staff a clear line-of-sight to see who enters and exits the building.
