CROSBY SCHOLARS COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
n 2023, we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Crosby Scholars Community Partnership Together, in the first thirty years of our organization, we have .graduated 13,210 Crosby Scholars seniors and helped to prepare them for .college. The Class of 2022 was our 29th graduating class of Crosby Scholars ..with 925 graduates enrolling in 128 colleges and universities throughout ..North Carolina and across the world. We could not have impacted so many .students, families and our community without you.
The vision of the Crosby Scholars Program is for every Forsyth County public school student to have the opportunity to pursue education after high school Crosby Scholars programming for 6th through 12th grade helps students achieve in and out of the classroom and contribute to the community through service. During the senior year, Crosby Scholars provides each student with a senior advisor as they navigate the college application and scholarship process. If a Crosby Scholar has unmet financial need to enroll in college, Crosby Scholars provides Last Dollar Grants.

Since 1992, Crosby Scholars has helped more than 35,400 students in preparing for higher education We are grateful for the community support that allows us to help students pursue their dreams and reach their full potential When I joined the Crosby Scholars Program as the Executive Director twentyseven years ago, I was excited about the opportunity to help students and families access higher education. As a first-generation college student, I understand the importance of the life-transforming possibilities that a college education can offer. Today, I believe that access to education and the opportunity to obtain a four-year degree, two-year degree, or credential is life changing. Education opens the doors to a new future. The Crosby Scholars Program shares this message with our youth, striving to create opportunity for social and economic mobility and make generational change in our community
As we embark on our 30th year of inspiring college and career dreams we thank you! Our affiliation with Goodwill of Northwest NC, our partnership with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, and many strategic collaborations have us well positioned to connect with students and families to create change. With generous supporters, a dedicated board of directors and staff, along with a caring community, we know the best is yet to come!

A CROSBY FAMILY A CROSBY FAMILY
Crosby Scholars Alumnus Keisha Horton, Director of Student Services at Parkland High School, expected her children to join Crosby Scholars, noting that “We were just a Crosby family ”
Horton graduated as a Crosby Scholar from Glenn High School in 1996 “I believe Crosby Scholars introduced me to the idea of time management and goal setting,” she says. “Most of my memories come from college tours.”
A first-generation college student, Horton grew up in Winston-Salem with her mother and younger sister. She began college at Winston-Salem State University because it was close to home, and there she fell in love and started her family Horton completed her degree in business management at High Point University and earned her master’s degree in school counseling from North Carolina A&T State University. She serves as a Crosby Scholars Senior Advisor.
“Crosby Scholars is so integral to our community,” Horton explains. Many people know about the Last Dollar Grants and scholarships, but Crosby Scholars Program benefits extend beyond these resources She cites the skills students develop and the many experiences they gain through community service
Keisha and her husband, Ryan Sr., ensured that their three children, Ryan Jr., Kayla, and Riley, and their
niece Nya Chandler, who they cared for while Horton's sister was in the Army, all enrolled in Crosby Scholars Ryan Jr , 23, attended WinstonSalem State University and Nya, 23, attended North Carolina Central University. Kayla, 21, is studying chemical engineering at North Carolina A&T, and she appreciates the leadership skills she developed in Crosby Scholars, as well as the test preparation, community service and college student panels.
As a 10th-grader, Riley is a member of the Crosby Scholars Leadership Council and has learned to be more comfortable talking with others as a result Riley also participates in the African American Males Pursuing Educational Dreams (AAMPED) program. Horton says AAMPED Coordinator Richard Watts has opened the floor for them to express any frustrations and concerns, knowing they’re not alone.
“I’ve always looked at Crosby Scholars as another level of counseling to help kids through the process of making the hardest decisions they have to make as young adults,” she said “Crosby Scholars just makes your future 10 times easier We believe in the Crosby Scholars mission,
we’re just glad to be a part of it.”
