What is Adulting?

The term Adulting tends to be used by those “who find themselves doing adult things for the first time and feeling like an adult,” says author & linguist Ben Zimmer. “It is very much attached to people coming of age, where they’re thrust into having to take things more seriously.” Every generation, he adds, “comes to grip with aging in their own way.”

Take one minute before we begin to do something important: say thank you.

get out your phones text one person a short text to thank them something big or small - your choice take 30 seconds to do this

Values Circle

Take out a piece of paper and a pen. Draw a circle like this one with 6 pieces.

In the chart you have drawn, write the six things in your life that are the most important to you right now. This can be anything.

Now - set that aside. On another piece of paper or on the back, draw another circle.

Mental Remix

Sometimes it is helpful to remember that our perspective (our filter) impacts our emotions.

How to Handle Stress

Stress is caused by external factors. Tests at school, big performances or competitions, and arguments with friends are all examples of external situations that can release stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. Your instincts take over. Stress can be overwhelming, but once the perceived threat (stressor) has disappeared, your feelings of stress will go away. We can not always avoid stress, so it is best to learn how manage stress as a part of our lives.

How to Handle Stress

Dealing with stress takes practice.

It’s something you do regularly and learn about over time.

Life involves stress so begin now learning what works best for you to help “de-stress” and “change to chill.”

Celebrating

Worthy Failures Mini Habits for Teens (p. 28)

"To build your resilience to failure and feel more confident putting yourself out there even when the outcome isn't guaranteed, celebrate yourself for your 'Worthy Failure of the Week'--an action you took that's aligned with your values but didn't necessarily turn out in your favor. We want to get into the habit of celebrating those actions because you were successful in acting according to your values and desires, even when you felt afraid. True failure would be to let those fears get in the way and take no action at all."

Goal Setting

“I am a firm believer in goal setting. Step by step. I can’t see any other way of accomplishing anything.”

Don’t be afraid to set short term goals.

Short term goals: 1 week or even 1 day

This leads to 2 weeks or 1 month...

Let every met goal feel like a victory!

Ask Good Questions

Learn to ask questions. This is a lifelong skill.

Ask for details.

Ask a follow-up question.

Ask for clarification.

Ask for an example.

Ask for the “best case scenario.”

Ask for a timeline.

Ask for a second opinion.

Ask for more time.

Ask for peace of mind.

Ask for next steps.

Get the information you need to ADULT.

Take Good Care

Keep learning how to take better care of yourself with choices you make regarding: eating sleeping activity/exercise exposure to risk mental well-being getting fresh air & sunlight

Find Good Help

Ask for support. Learn about resources in your community, campus, workplace & use them.

Seek out friend groups and peers.
