terminal the technology BEHIND THE SCENES

Dear friend: It is with tremendous pride that I take this opportunity to invite you to join me in traveling behind the scenes of one of the world’s finest airline terminals—Terminal 4 at JFK International Airport in New York. As I stroll through the terminal’s 1.5 million square feet of space, my eyes are drawn to the massive glass walls that flood the building with sunlight. I observe the inviting stretch of retail shops and restaurants, the wide, passenger-friendly aisles that adjoin the counters of the nearly 40 international and domestic airlines, serving nearly 8.5 million passengers a year. Then, as I continue my walk, I consider the technology and equipment that power this amazing place: the stateof-the-art voice and data infrastructure, redundant Internet service that is monitored 24/ 7/ 365, and of course, the miles upon miles of copper and fiber cabling snaking behind the walls, ceiling and floors. I marvel at the feats of engineering that went into making Terminal 4’s ticket counters, jetways, lounges, check-in kiosks, baggage services and more a showcase of ingenuity, user-friendliness and most importantly, safe and secure transportation. Terminal 4 is the conceptual idea of innumerable people whose technical skill, determination and commitment to excellence brought this terminal to life in May of 2001. It remains, today, the archetype of advanced technology, reliability and everyday usability. Whether you represent an airline considering locating here or a retailer or restaurant mulling a new location, I invite you to discover why so many businesses have placed their faith in JFK/ IAT, the management company that developed and operates Terminal 4, and why it can be a marvelous place for you to do business as well. Sincerely,

Alain Maca President JFK/ IAT, LLC

TERMINAL 4

A great place for passengers and employees Located on 165 acres and occupying more than 1.5 million square feet of space, Terminal 4 is one of the largest air terminals in North America. Opened in May 2001, the terminal is home to approximately 40 international and domestic airlines representing some 35 countries. Terminal 4 was designed with adequate infrastructure to move between 10 to 12 million passengers and thousands of aircraft through its facility every year. Terminal 4’s expansive shopping concourse offers a wide range of retail options before security, enabling passengers and family members to shop and dine together prior to boarding. Practically anything a departing or arriving patron needs can be found in the terminal’s 30 retail shops, which consist of everything from upscale clothing and jewelry boutiques to affordable gift shops, from convenience stores selling sundries to a full-service spa and arcade game area. JFK/IAT has created a strong sense of community among both tenants and management. Everyone sees themselves as stakeholders, working in harmony to ensure that Terminal 4 always remains a great place to work and a wonderful place for passengers to pass through en route to their destinations. Monthly meetings of a group known as TFAC, or Terminal Four Airline Consortium, take place to address tenant concerns. Crisis drills are run regularly. Outside experts are brought in to discuss ways to improve operations by sharing their knowledge of best practices. In short, every employee shares the belief that the key to their success lies in working to enhance the passenger experience.

The Role of Technology in Terminal 4 The singular mission of technology in Terminal 4 is the consistent delivery of both conspicuous and unseen operational and passenger benefits. Primary in the minds of IT engineers and designers who conceived and built the terminal’s infrastructure was the installation of a flexible, scalable, resilient open-architecture communications solution based on a converged IP network that would seamlessly integrate data, voice and video for the benefit of passengers, airlines and onsite businesses. Their vision is today’s reality.

Wired from Day One and Ready to Go The terminal uses a shared-tenant model that services multiple tenants simultaneously, delivering everything from Internet access to voice messaging and voice services to IT managed services – without any additional capital expenditure required by the tenant. By leveraging the state-of-the-art cabling infrastructure installed by RGTS, service to any area of the terminal, from office spaces to ticket counters to jetways, can be turned up quickly. It’s an example of the partnership that has existed from the beginning between JFK/IAT and Rockefeller Group Technology Solutions (RGTS), the terminal’s preferred technology partner.

Terminal 4 is also a fully technologyready building, having been provisioned for stability, flexibility, diversity and redundancy in equipment, service providers and the paths those services take to reach each tenant.

Advanced Technology that Works for People Examples of advanced technology can be seen almost everywhere. For instance, tenants benefit from receiving networked services, which streamlines communications with regional offices. In addition, more than 200 active counters help speed passengers on their way, using a check-in system called Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE). That means all check-in positions can be used by any of the international and domestic airlines that share the terminal. In another example, check-in desks with universal computer connections allow airlines to move their equipment and personnel into the departure area only when they have a flight leaving, relieving the airlines of having to invest in full-time personnel and structures in the check-in area. And, as you would expect in a terminal of this stature, passengers enjoy the freedom to wirelessly access the Internet through laptops, personal digital assistants (PDAs) or Internet kiosks anywhere within the main terminal building.
