Creating Cohesion through Collaboration Elementary Ice Cream Party!

May 30, 2014 Volume 1, Issue 3

The curriculum department offered a challenge to students. If every student in a class met their Reading Counts goals for the month of January, they would earn an ice cream party. The event was so popular, it was repeated in May for those classes meeting April goals. Now, as we wrap up the school year, we are honoring students that met their annual goals with a pizza party. We are expecting 27 students to attend! Way to go elementary! -Melissa Brown

School-Wide Math Olympiad News A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped with this year's 5th Annual Math Olympiad. I appreciate everyone's efforts, whether it was behind the scenes helping to prepare and set-up tables prior to the event or working diligently the day of helping to score and run stations. I especially appreciate the elementary Department's flexibility of hosting the competition in their class rooms due to the Social Hall being closed. Kudos to all of the department coordinators for their wonderful organization and planning: Mary in ECE, Lori in ES, Lynn/Ryan in MS and John in HS. Thank you to Katie, Ingrid, and Becky in SN for coordinating the SN Math Olympiad and supporting our students in the schoolwide event. Without everyone's help and participation, we could not have had a successful competition. So, once again to all who helped, THANK YOU!

High School Social Studies Textbook Adoption Update The following new standardsbased social studies textbooks have been officially adopted and approved for use in high school classroom instruction beginning next school year:

Grade 10: World History & Geography: Modern Times (McGraw-Hill, 2014) Grade 11: US History & Geography: Modern Times (McGrawHill, 2014) Grade 12: Building Citizenship: Civics and Economics (McGraw -Hill, 2014)

Honors, traditional and other grade-level courses will use the same adopted texts due to their great flexibility and adaptability. Next school year, we will implement another textbook adoption process for use in middle school classroom instruction. -Alex Zernovoj

We have started training on both the ELA and Math Common Core State Standards, and will introduce the new Next Generation Science Standards this coming fall. The diagram on the right shows the relationships and convergences between the three groups of standards and how they all support each other to ensure the best learning possible for all students.

The Importance of Early Intervention It has long been believed that implementing early intervention services for deaf and hard of hearing children would enhance their academic success in the long run. The first students that benefited from CSDR’s Early Childhood Education services are currently in 5th grade. We discovered some strong data that proves that early intervention is critical to academic achievement.

The 5th graders took the MAP test last spring. Those who were PIP students averaged a score of 209 for Language, 204 for Reading, and 218 for Math, as opposed to those who were not enrolled in PIP, whose scores were at least 20 points lower in each tested area. For the PIP students, the nationwide averages for both Language and Math were both met, which further supports the importance of ECE services.

“We see how early childhood experiences are so important to lifelong outcomes, how the early environment literally becomes embedded in the brain and changes its architecture.” -A. Garner
