Welcome letter from Athletic Director Greetings from the Athletic Director, Welcome to the 33rd Annual Western States Basketball Classic and 26th Western States Cheerleading Classic. The California School for the Deaf (CSDR) is proud to host this year’s event. This will be an exciting event for all of us as we will witness an exciting and friendly competition among the eight western schools. Please take your time to recognize our wonderful committees who have worked diligently to make this event possible. Thank you for being a big part of WSBC/WSCC and we certainly hope you enjoy your visit to CSDR and the beautiful, sunny state of California. Sincerely, David Hamilton Athletic Director 4
Welcome Letter from superintendent Welcome to CSDR! It is our pleasure to once again host the Western States Basketball Classic (WSBC). Many times as spectators we don't realize what goes on behind the scenes to prepare for an event this large. However, I can assure you that there have been hours of hard work scheduling games, reserving facilities, handling sleeping accommodations and many other details to bring this event to fruition. Our two co-chairs and the WSBC Committee deserve a big pat on the back for their efforts. Please join me in thanking them when you see them this weekend. WSBC provides a unique venue through which students, families, and community members from eight different schools come together to compete and socialize for the weekend. Although the sporting events are enjoyable, the real benefit of this event comes to our students through interacting with their peers and positive role models in the deaf community, and meeting new friends. We often tell visitors how CSDR strives to provide a rich environment from which students can gain social skills and learn important life lessons outside of a formal classroom through incidental learning. WSBC and events such as this provide a wealth of knowledge for our deaf children. At these events, they can observe adults interacting in ASL, meet other deaf students from different states, and students can relax in an environment that is totally accessible to them through visual communication. For many of our deaf students, events such as this are their only opportunity to have such interaction. I hope you will take this opportunity to speak with some of our deaf children. They need our guidance and assistance if they are to overcome the challenges that face our world today. You have an opportunity to pass along your wisdom and experience to the next generation by simply spending some time with a young person. As the competitions continue throughout the day, my wife and I will be attending the festivities. We are looking forward to meeting with you, so please feel free to come up and introduce yourself to us. This weekend we consider all of you to be members of the "CSDR Family."
