G T ’ S S TO RY From our namesake Gary Turner building one of the first BMX race bikes in 1972 to our modern carbon fibre creations that redefine fast-as-hell, we’ve built a long legacy of racing and winning, yet never taking ourselves too seriously.

As a company, we’re 45 going on 18 – and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

1972 BMX frames of the era just weren’t strong enough – so Gary Turner used his experience welding drag racing cars and started making BMX frames that were faster, lighter, and WAY more durable than anything else. GT Bicycles was born in the back of a sun-blessed garage in Southern California.

‘17 - BEYOND Following the reinvigoration of the BMX roster, GT also formed a new GT Factory Racing MTB team, focussing on success and Good Times, both on and off the bike. Adding World Cup enduro wins to the trophy haul, the GT team goes from strength to strength, helping push the innovation and quality of GT Bicycles.

Collectively, the entire GT team is hard at work scripting the next chapter in GT’s storied history.

‘74–‘80 GT Bicycles evolved quickly with a simple vision: to help riders push the envelope of what’s possible on two wheels creating the most reliable, innovative and flat-out fastest bikes around. Gary teamed up with Richard Long.

Richard is the business guy, selling frames, sponsoring riders and generally doing his level best to become the biggest name in BMX. And Gary? He made it possible with the most innovative frames in the business.

‘12–‘15 GT partnered with the Athertons, the fastest mountain bike family in the world. Working together they developed world-class products such as revamping the GT Fury – the GT Atherton team earned over 50 World Cup podiums, 3 World Championships, and 3 World Cup overall titles.

Out on the roads, GT helped revolutionise road riding with the Grade, going further than road bikes had ever been before.

‘81–‘86 GT became synonymous with durability and winning, bringing home more BMX wins and clout than any other bike brand of the era with everyone from Gary Ellis, to Greg Hill to Chicken George Seevers winning every weekend on GTs. GT also began to pioneer the new sport of BMX freestyle with bikes such as the Performer.

Also, cycling legend Hans Rey signs with GT in 1986...

‘07–‘11 GT continued to adopt new technologies, introducing production 29ers, followed by the i-Drive7 in 2007, and a new proprietary carbon frame. GT’s Brian Lopes is the 2007 4x World Champion. In 2008, Burry Stander became the U23 XC World Champion. In the inaugural Olympics for BMX Racing, Mike Day took home silver with teammate Jill Kintner winning bronze. In 2009, Mick Hannah podiums (again and again) on the ground-breaking all-new Fury carbon downhill bike.

‘87–‘94

‘95–‘98

Applying the same attitude toward the emerging sport of mountain biking and with input from Hans and co, GT set out to design even more of the best bikes in the world. The Zaskar MTB was launched in 1990 and quickly became the most versatile mountain bike ever made – winning World Cups in trials, slalom, cross-country and even downhill.

GT’s commitment to building progressionenabling bikes continued – In 1996, GT won the commission to manufacture a highly aerodynamic bike design that would later become known as the ‘Superbike’, hailed at the time “as the best on the planet” and later banned by Olympic track cycling regulations for being “too fast.”

‘99–‘06 A whole new era of mountain innovation (and winning results) dawns.

GT introduced i-Drive® suspension to rave reviews and the LOBO DH bike hit the big slopes. Suspended bikes made up 80% of the models over $1,000. Oh yeah, and the Saturn and Lotto Pro Cycling teams take turns riding GT road bikes over a couple of winning seasons. GT continued to test innovations that included the world’s first downhill bike with a production gearbox design, the IT-1.

THE 2017 SANCTION In Enduro events, you win the race based on your total descent time over multiple stages, so the logic of building an Enduro bike based on a championship-winning gravity bike is obvious. That’s what we’ve done with the Sanction. It has the same leverage

(suspension travel to shock compression) ratios as its big brother Fury, but in a 165mm travel size instead of the Fury’s 210mm.

There is a fine line between what some call “All-Mountain” and what others would call Enduro, Freeride, or Trail riding. The common denominator is that you ride up a mountain and come down with varying degrees of emphasis on the gravity that brings you back down. The beauty in cycling is that every person can do it for their own reasons, whether that is for fitness, travel, competition, adrenaline, a connection to nature, to grow friendships, or to keep their sanity. Personally, I’m hooked on every style of riding: cross country, backcountry, trials, downhill, enduro, freeride, road, even e-bikes! Every time I ride, I lose myself in the moment, and that is what’s perfect about riding. It’s like a meditation and a workout all in one.

This very idea is why GT is like family to me. I feel privileged to have been a part of the company for the last 30 years. It stands for so many different things, but it’s the sum of those things that makes it so special. GT’s bikes have been my trusted companion on adventures and in races, a loyal partner in both dangerous situations and casual Sunday rides, and an ally in training sessions and commutes. GT feels as much a part of me as my DNA and shapes my philosophy for life, on and off the bike.

I race because it’s in my blood… I have been racing since the age of 4, and I just love doing it! I’m so happy I am able to race professionally in mountain biking. Out of all the types of riding, I’ve found myself most drawn to Enduro over the years. To me, Enduro is a big challenge, and physically the hardest of the mountain biking disciplines I’ve ever done. Those aspects of Enduro are what I love: a challenge and pushing my body to the limit.

When the GT guys get together on a trip, it always sparks fun and eventful times. Whether it’s at a gas station, a breakfast spot or a campus, I’ve had people ask about us.

“Are you guys a band?” or “Are you guys a rugby team?” are just a couple humorous inquiries I’ve heard. I’ve also heard people say “you guys look like you’re having fun”.

No we aren’t in a band, although it would be easier to fly a guitar on a plane. No, we don’t play rugby. Those scrapes and bruises are from concrete. Yes, we are having fun, in fact we are having the time of our lives.

While I chuckle at the fact that they think we are something we aren’t, I love the fact that they can sense that we are a good group of friends. We love riding our bikes. We love exploring new territory. We love joking around with each other, whether it’s in the city streets or in the constantly entertaining team group chat. As the adventures continue I see what onlookers would consider a group of good friends, steadily evolving into a family. A family which is serious about fun and fun even when it’s time to handle business. This is GT. 112

Dirt. As humans, we have created so many ways to get rid of it: brooms, dust pans, washing machines, vacuum cleaners. But the roots of BMX have grown in dirt, and that is what continues to elevate it to new levels.
