AR FROM THE MADDING CROWD

Stereotype perceptions of Mauritius as just another laid back, over-theweekend island destination were dashed out of our imaginations instantly! Our expectations bordered on the refreshing surprises that lay hidden by the sugarcane bend and round the deserted cove and cerulean bay. We breezed past country lanes and dual carriageways, along panoramic coastal roads bordering the shores to picturesque Flic et Flac on Wolmar Beach. On the windswept, sparkling sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean, the day had just begun at 12 noon. As pretty lithe curvy belles in neon bikinis gamboled around the gentle lagoon waves on the sprawling Sugar Beach Resort’s open seafront, instant calm and tranquility inched into our nerves. If you dig the carefree abandon of tickling graveled sands, then this was it. As the blues shifted tones across the surf beyond, we were welcomed with an invitingly chilled 2007 South African Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc. From ‘Tides’ the breezy eco-designed beachside restobar, we caught glimpses of windsurfers gliding past our visions on the distant horizon. Plantation-styled design, lush open lawns and swaying palms worked their natural presence to lull us into relaxed repose. Nothing comes remotely close to the long, wordless stroll along the beach as sunset announced a deep crimson night, luxury yachts and small colorful craft around a tiny pier anchored to a good night’s rest. The deft hands that worked their assuring magic on our limbs attested our unhurried, langorous pace at ‘Aura’ the Sugar Beach Resort’s designer garden-fringed spa, as we worked away our flight delays and overnight wait. The gentle sea breeze retarded our pace into the wee hours of the amber night.

tique, designer resort-rhumery –the award winning Rhumerie de Chamarel, washed by winter rain and held shelter by frolicking pineapple and sugarcane vegetation. Outstanding white and flavored rums got us into first gear as we sipped one jewel after the other, devoid of the sweet leit motif that sugarcane is supposed to lend. So after a good dose of the Gold Medal and Silver Medal white and the Coffee-steeped and the ‘Coeur de Chauffe’ colored marvels we experienced 40% volume nudging us into playful mirth! By evening, the mauve-tinged coves and lavender-brushed bays bordering the grand luxury ‘Le Touessrok’ beckoned to us with marshy affirmation. In this island of Paradise, colors sniff and squirm across the celestial expanses with dismissive casualness.

CRÈME DE LA CRÈME Neighboring this lavish five star tropical hospitality paradise on the tranquil Trou D’Eau Douce Bay are two of it’s own Robinson Crusoe islands with their virgin ecology undulating into the Indian Ocean expanses. Lagoon villas and meandering pools contrast lush green foliage and private beach stretches where the affluently choosy swoop down to unwind, retreat and revive spirits in total privacy. Our private jet boat zip across the prussian waters frog-leaped our enthusiasm to their private island jetty of ‘The Island

Our talkative companion Michel at the wheels raved about their sugarcane produce and the appeal of ‘spirited’ adventure it beheld in it’s juicy, sugary stalks. of Deers’ or ‘Ille Aux Cerfs’. A waiting buggy rolled us into the turfed lap of their 18-hole Par 72 Championship Golf Course designed by the ace Bernhard Langer. With tee decks planed smartly along the hillocky greens and liberal fairways for negotiating challenges, this award-winning golf course has seasoned regulars working out their mornings, the salubrious lagoons and azure sea offering breathtaking pause in between. Our speedboat soft-landed us noon time, as we hopped off at the tiny private deserted island of ‘Illot Mangenie’ an exclusive haven reserved only for residents of ‘Le Touessrok’ where we quaffed a chilled South African 2008 ‘Klein Constantia Chardonnay’. The mind-caressing vistas of the fantastic Indian Ocean with changing aquamarines embroidered with sparkling surf added to our beachcombing excitement. If floating down the bay on a lone pontoon and angling rod for company gives you a high, walking down the coral shores guided by peachy giant crabs and coral angel fish is reliving a silent excitement of the senses. To top up the crystal flute sojourn, the boutique ‘Givenchy’ Designer Spa at ‘le Touessrok’ ensures that your ninety minute dedicated aroma massage leaves you delightfully rejuvenated and revived. But to lodge such memories into archival permanence would seem effortless, as a perfect ‘Kir Royale’ with a 2002 Tattinger Champagne at the bar at Plantation-styled ‘Barlen’s’ restaurant would lead you to ponder amidst amber diffused ambience.

UPPERCRUST TO THE HILT Individual designer villas dot the exquisite private beach overlooking a distant ocean and forefront lagoon fronds. Laid out as a highend, ultra-chic getaway at Four Seasons Resort at Anahita, Boasting Mauritius’ most elitist leisure acres, is this swank address inhabiting cheerful lagoons and contemporary design with eco-sensitive architecture. A secluded haven of plush and elegant living, our beachfront villa enveloped us with instant calm and the sounds of silence. It was the brush strokes of a gentle breeze that shifted our gaze from lapping waves and an unhurried dusk. Sitting on the very ledge of the outer deck, the candle light environs of Italian restaurant ‘Acquapazza’ emanated true blue Italian aromas. Located on the Four Seasons Resort’s private island ‘Ile aux Chats’ besides the engaging contemporary Italian cuisine and vintage wines, we were totally bedaz-

zled by the seamless expanse of the open universe, the Great Bear, the Stag, the Constellations and zillion celestial spots lighting up the night. Doing nothing seems so very conveniently apt in such sacred surrounds where sand, sea and surf play hide-n-seek with hyper cloud formations adding kaleidoscopic texture to spatial moods. But a spot of swing on the 11th Hole on the Ernie Els Championship golf course is as invigorating as the spectacular scapes beyond the water’s edge promontory. The magnificently designed world class Four Seasons Golf Club and golf course was our morning coffee, the golfers and caddies in no hurry to populate the turf until noon. Even the tourney practice seemed distant. Graceful schooners, luxury yachts and dare devil speedboats cut swathes of white on an unbelievably dazzling ultramarine Indian Ocean, as we buggied back to our domain. That night as we strolled back to our villa, we could faintly catch the sashaying whisper of Island tunes, light drums teasing the breeze, the Sega magic had just begun to unfold. Did we dream of seductive maidens in flowing sheer sarongs swaying to the Sega beats, smiling away the darkness with their glowing floral silhouettes…..?

nocent assertion as we imbibed God;s own inimitable artistry in the smallest of His creatures. The smart-n-trendily spread out Caudan Waterfront at Port Louis engaged our attention over pedigree Kimberley diamonds and South African gold, designer apparel, eclectic and prized aroma therapy oils and fragrances, authentic Mauritian art and prêt wear. But nothing quite typically Mauritian was the brief, private rum tastings we had the the famous Sugar World, a heritage museum that showcases the islands long documented sugar industry enterprise. Later in the day we set our minds a-sailing and dreaming across the oceans as we sized up the magnificent creaftsmanship of miniature model vintage ships at ‘Historic Marine’, Mauritian wonderland of authentic pride. porting Capital

Melbournians are proud of their city’s pre-eminent place in the world as a sporting destination and not without reason. It’s the venue for the first Grand Slam tennis event on the Calendar – the Australian open that is famous for its casual vibe and spectator friendly venues. The Formula 1 season usually kick starts (like this year) at Albert Park Lake, a brilliant street circuit and the city is also the spiritual home of ‘Oz rules’ football. But for most Indians the most iconic sporting symbol of the city is the

MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) that hosted the Olympics in 1956 and has also been a venue of famous Indian wins like the test series levelling victory in 1981 against Australia and the victory over Pakistan in 1985 in the seven nation One day tournament.

Gourmet Paradise Melbourne’s multicultural identity has spawned a gourmet food culture that is almost unrivalled anywhere in the region. The city is believed to have the largest Greekspeaking population outside Europe and Melbourne’s Greek Precinct is full of fascinating Greek restaurants and cafes. Lygon Street is the hub of the Italian food scene and it was here that the city’s first Espresso machine was installed sparking Melbourne’s fascination with coffee. Melbourne is also home to a large Vietnamese community and you can find the most authentic Pho (Vietnamese soup) and rice paper rolls east of Vietnam in and around Victoria Street. Downtown Melbourne is a foodie’s paradise and showcases the country’s fine gourmet traditions that have now become world famous thanks to ‘Master Chef Australia’

History and Arts The streets of downtown Melbourne are steeped in history and culture. The Flinders Park station is one of the city’s most popular architectural landmarks and was built over 100 years ago with an award winning design from a competition that was open to the public. It is also one of the busiest commuter stations in the country and you can also take a ride in one of the city’s iconic trams; probably the quickest way to travel in downtown Melbourne. The city’s art and culture scene converge at the ‘Arts Centre’ on the banks of the Yarra River. The State Theatre, the Playhouse and the Fairfax studio located beneath the Arts centre feature some of the finest opera, ballet and musicals.

Night Life Melbourne is not only one of the safest cities but also boasts of a vibrant nightlife. The Crown Casino is an integral part of the Melbourne Skyline and one of the biggest casinos in the Asia Pacific. Aside from roulette and blackjack tables and scores of gaming machines, the Crown also houses 25 restaurants and 11 bars; it’s also a favourite

“India is one of our major source markets” – Ms Louise Asher Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Government of Victoria who led a Government Super Trade Mission to India spoke to us in Mumbai. We have seen a steady increase of visitors from India; last year alone close to 72,000 Indian tourists spent about $217 Million in Victoria. For the first time in 2012 we attracted the largest share of visitor numbers as well as expenditure by Indian visitors of any state in Australia. If we continue to sustain these numbers, India could send around 127,500 visitors to Victoria by 2021 and we could see spends top half a billion dollars; only second to travellers from China. Melbourne is home to 140 different cultures and we believe that it adds a wonderful dimension to one of Australia’s most stylish and romantic cities that is also the perfect hub to explore nearby destinations.

The World’s most scenic drive? If there was a poll among motorists to pick the world’s most scenic drive, there’s a good chance that the Great Ocean Road will be high on that list. This amazing stretch begins in Torquay in the South West of Melbourne and is spread over 240 kms. It offers a diverse mix of experiences from Australian fauna at the Tower Hill state reserve to the best of Australian wine and gourmet good in quaint towns like Apollo Bay. But above all that it is the breathtaking ocean views that make this a memorable drive and the highlight of this stretch are the 12 Apostles – craggy limestone formations that dot the Victorian coastline and can set your camera in overdrive. t’s not easy to pick the perfect time to visit Gulmarg. It’s one of those destinations where hotels are usually sold out during peak winter when the mercury dips way below zero and the perfect summer getaway when temperatures across most Indian metros are testing the 40 degree mark. I chose the first week of March – winter was almost over and Spring had not officially begun; there was enough ice and snow and yet day time temperatures had crossed the 10 degree mark. Even before I left the Srinagar airport to Gulmarg, I discovered Kashmir’s favourite brew - Kahwa (Also spelt as Qewah), a refreshing green tea with the subtle presence of saffron and almonds and I didn’t wait till I reached Gulmarg to shop for Kahwa ingredients and other spices and dry fruits from the region. The drive from the airport to Gulmarg is about 90 minutes and Tangmarg just outside Gulmarg is the perfect shopping spot for local specialities. The landscape changes almost instantly as you begin the steep climb into Gulmarg, the tracks are covered with snow and you

Gulmarg has emerged as one of Asia’s preferred skiing destinations. We were there at the fag end of Gulmarg’s winter only to discover that you haven’t really been to Gulmarg unless you have visited this picturesque destination in all its four seasons. The Gulmarg Gondola

feel more secure in a vehicle with a 4-wheel drive option. It’s easily one of India’s most scenic destinations and it’s easy to see why this has been a favourite with Mughal Emperors like Jahangir and senior British officers. Gulmarg literally translates into ‘Meadow of flowers’ and has consistently been ranked among Asia’s top 10 skiing destinations. But a lack of quality luxury accommodation has meant that most travellers (Aside from serious skiing enthusiasts) make Srinagar their base and visit Gulmarg for the day. That is likely to change with the debut of Gulmarg’s first luxury abode – the Khyber Resort and Spa. Spread over 7 acres, this 85-room resort allows you to experience Kashmiri hospitality at its best. There was an elaborate high tea waiting at Nouf, the resort’s dining space with a large deck and stunning views of the mountains after which I cooled off my travel weary heels at the Den, Khyber’s exclusive movie screening venue with a tub of pop corn. Aside from the Nouf the hotel has two other observation decks with stunning perspectives of Gulmarg. Cloves, Khyber’s versatile all-day dining restaurant features an exhaustive selection of International cuisines and Calabash, the Cigar Lounge is one of the cosiest nooks in the resort. Khyber is all set to add a luxury spa and a heated swimming pool in the next few months. 24

You can’t move even an inch without the right equipment and my first stop on day two was the local market where I hired the tallest boots I’ve ever worn in my life to help me navigate through the snow covered terrain. And soon I was at the starting point of the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the tallest in the world. This two-stage ropeway begins at Gulmarg (8,530 ft) and takes skiers and tourists to a height of 12,293 ft to the Kongdoori mountain that is close to the famous Afarwat Peak and just miles away from the Line of Control. This architectural marvel is actually split into two levels and can carry up to 600 passengers per hour and offers spectacular views as you ascend. Both the landing points are perfect to capture panoramic images of the valley. After reluctantly descending back to Gulmarg it was time to visit another landmark, the Shiva temple (also popularly referred to as the Maharani temple). Built almost 100 years ago by Mohini Bai Sisodhia the wife of Maharaja Hari Singh, this temple might be small but is full of character and looks prettier in the winter, courtesy the snow. The temple was also the backdrop for Jai Jai Shiv Shankar the famous Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz song from the 1974 super hit Aap Ki Kasam. The melting ice made the relatively short climb to the temple quite tricky and that’s when I realised the value of the extra long

boots in this terrain. It was comforting to return to the relative warmth of the Khyber, and the Kashmiri speciality chefs at the resort had laid out a Kashmiri ‘Wazwan’ for me. This celebration meal normally reserved for special occasions was not just authentic but also served in traditional style on the floor by an attentive service crew. Rice is the staple in Kashmir and the rice was accompanied by a variety of gravies cooked with lotus stem, potato and lamb; each tastier than the other. The highlight of the meal was reserved for the end – a delightful ‘Phirnee’ with a hint of saffron. I spent the evening at Benji’s Bar at the Highland Park Hotel, one of Gulmarg’s legendary institutions. It’s a quaint colonial style bar with a large fireplace and with walls full of fascinating memorabilia and a hub for skiers to discuss their day’s adventures or misadventures.

Getting there and around there: Gulmarg is about 55 kms (90 minutes) from the Srinagar airport which is connected with all major metros When to go: Winter (Dec-Feb) is ideal if you are looking at skiing or other winter sports. Summer (June-July) is perfect to see the valley in full bloom and outdoor activities like golf and trekking.

I drove past the World’s highest Golf Green and probably one of the most scenic Golf courses in India on day three. The fairways and greens of the Gulmarg Golf Club were completely covered in snow. But for the clubhouse I would have mistaken it for another ski slope on the road to the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering. The IISM is one of India’s premier skiing institutes and has a range of courses for beginners and pros that range from two weeks and above. I certainly didn’t have time for an extended course but managed to take my first baby steps with the equipment from the institute and also decided I would return for more during another winter. Gulmarg certainly does not have as many shopping options as Srinagar but there are quite a few stores well stocked with quintessential Kashmir souvenirs like Kashmiri rugs, pashmina shawls and the cult Alpine Mountain tees. I stopped at some of Gulmarg’s panoramic view points and also along the ski slopes for a quick peek at winter sports like skiing and sledding. It was time to head back to the Srinagar airport and spent the last couple of hours lounging on the luxurious deck chair in the balcony gazing at mountains that were almost at touching distance and plotting my next visit to Gulmarg; probably in the summer! EXPERIENCING AMRITSAR IN A DAY & A HALF Golden Temple

The holy city of Punjab, Amritsar is a land of cultural and spiritual heritage with several tourist spots. It holds a very strong position in the history of India and Pakistan.

M

y grandmother while narrating stories of Amritsar is exuberated with emotion and memories about this golden city, which she used to visit as a child every weekend from Lahore. Amritsar to her is more than just the city of Harmindar Sahib or Jallianwala Bagh. It is the city filled with numerous childhood memories, of before and after partition. Hearing about the Golden Temple, Hall Bazaar, Lawrence Road and the food, we could not help but head to Amritsar to explore this wondrous city. Amritsar, approximately 460 kms away from Delhi is easily commutable by the Amritsar Shatabdi. However, if you are looking at spending just one night, you may prefer to take a flight and save on time. As soon as we touched ground, the first thing we had to do was visit the Golden Temple or popularly called Darbar Sahib. As we sat in the cab, Itinder Singh, our taxi driver, symbolized all that is ‘Amritsari’. He had immense pride for the city and started regaling us with interesting facts about this old walled city that is encompassed within 12 gates. It was then, that I realized I have the perfect guide for the day. It only took us, all of 20 minutes to reach the Golden Temple. After the customary washing of the feet, we entered this spectacular spiritual shimmering temple and almost instantaneously felt at peace. We were left stunned as we saw the temple sit beautifully on the Sarovar (lake), while thousands of followers could be seen taking a dip in the holy water, praying, enjoying the langar prashad or like me, just staring at the temple in awe. Also devotees from various backgrounds and social strata were engaged in Kar Sewa and we couldn’t help but point out the sense of equality. If time permits, we recommend you visit the temple at night for a breathtakingly site of the temple beautifully lit up. You are sure to cherish this vision for a long time. Afterwards we decided to grab a big glass

of lassi with samosa to quickly refuel. Lassi, available in almost every nook and corner around the Harmidar Sahib, is a must try with an inch of malai on top and beautifully whipped, cool, sweet yogurt below. One can also try the varieties of kulchas for a quick snack before heading to the Jallianwala Bagh. The Bagh is a 5 minutes walk from the Golden Temple. As we enter, the first thing we notice is a mark stating “this is the place where the bullets were fired from”. It was then, that we could visualize the gruesome event that took place on April 13, 1929. As I approached the bullet marks on the walls, eeriness surrounded me. Despite hordes of tourists, this space still has its own sense of silence that lets you gather your thoughts and pay your respect to all those who lost their lives. Having completed our morning must-do list, we decided to check-in before proceeding further. We stayed at Hotel Golden Tulip which was extremely comfortable and a good option in Amritsar if you’re looking at a tariff of ` 3,203 - 5,158 per night. In case, you want a true 5 star, top of the line experience, Hotel Ista is where you must check in with tariffs ranging from ` 4,500 - 7,700 per night. Various other options, which are worth looking up, are Hotel Country Inn, Best Western Merrion and HK Clarks Inn. For lunch we stopped at Makhan Restaurant which truly lived up to it’s name and Amritsar’s pride. This small air-conditioned restaurant offered the best Amritsari fish I have ever tried with butter naan. For vegetarians, the best option would be to try the tomato paneer with Indian bread. Next up was Attari station, Kanjri Pull and the Wagah Border. Attari station is about 30 minutes from the old city and only about 3.5 kms from the Wagah Border. For history

NICHE TRAVEL : PILGRIMAGE buffs, this is a must visit being oldest train link between India and Pakistan since partition in 1947. It is here that passengers start their journey, aboard Samjhauta Express, to Lahore, Pakistan. Pul Kanjri is a historical site that hasn’t been given it’s due share of importance. This fascinating and charming site is based on one of the numerous legends from Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s time. The legend states that a young Muslim dancer (Punjabi word Kanjri) Moran, hailing from Lahore, was on her way to dance at the Maharaja’s Baradari when her sandal fell into the water channel on the way. The piqued dancer refused to dance until a pul (bridge) was built hence the place became popular as Pul Kanjri. An absolute must for any visitor is the Wagah Border for its intensely patriotic feel and hysteria. Officially accessible by both nations, the ‘lowering of the flags’ closing ceremony is a daily martial custom carried out by the security forces of India (Border Security Force) and Pakistan (Sutlej Rangers) since 1959. On the Indian side you can hear thousands of people screaming and cheering ‘Jai Hind’ and ‘Vandematram’ with an incredible energy and a nationalist fervor. On the other side, there are crowds of Pakistani nationals screaming ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ with as much energy and zeal. This 45 minutes ceremony ends with an aura of celebrations along with loud shouts of patriotism. The ceremony takes place around 5:30pm; if you aren’t carrying a VIP pass, we recommend you reach by at least 3:30pm to grab a seat. Post the ceremony, we decided to have an early dinner at the famous Surjit Chicken House located in the elite area - Lawrence Road. As Amritsar is a land of foodies, it was very pleasant to see all kinds of people, coming together and enjoying the heavenly food at this humble restaurant. The following day we went for an Amritsari breakfast to the famous Bharawan Da Dhaba, est. in 1912. This restaurant offers top of the line north Indian cuisine. We couldn’t stop eating the stuffed paranthas glistening with desi ghee. Other places that you must try are Kesar Dhaba (highly recommended), Beera Chicken Corner, Brijwasi, MK Hotel and All India Famous Kulchas. We recommend you take some time out to do a bit of shopping. Amritsar is known for its jutis, phulkaari work, papad and wadiya. And yet a lot of those regular ‘roadies’ would have never guessed that just off the road to the new Bengaluru airport and about two hours from the city lie some of the country’s most legendary vineyards. Nashik has leapfrogged the rest of the country to become India’s premier wine destination courtesy a clutch of enterprising vineyard owners and government policies that has encouraged the industry with generous subsidies. It’s not just Nashik but also the emerging region of Akluj (Near Solapur) that have made Maharashtra account for over 80% of India’s grape-wine production. Mumbai is also India’s single largest wine market accounting for close to 40% of all wine sales in India. Although India’s changing lifestyles have created a demand for wine and have

Wine grape harvesting

Some quick tips on Wine ☛  Always store wine at the right temperature (4-8 degrees for White 24-28 degrees centigrade for Red) ☛  Always order wine by the bottle at a restaurant instead of wine by the glass. You never know when the wine bottle was opened and if it was stored at the right temperature. ☛  The basic difference between dry, semi dry and sweet wines is the sugar content. 4 gms per litre for dry wines, 4-8 gms for semi-dry and above 10 gms for sweet wines. ☛  If you are having multiple wines during a meal or evening, start with light wines before moving to more complex wines and finish with sweet wines. ☛  Ensure the wine is sweeter than the food you eat. If the wine is less sweet it will tend to taste tart and bitter; this is why Port wine works best with dessert.

the bud. Most of the wine-grape cultivations turned to table grape production. Grover Vineyards driven by its founder Kanwal Grover was one of the Industry pioneers and in 1983 undertook an extensive study of the Indian terroir (terrain for wine cultivation) and planted 33 French grape varietals in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. After five years of extensive research the Nandi Hills region near Bengaluru was chosen as the perfect region to grow premium wine. Nine of the 33 varietals were planted and in 1988 Grover Vineyards was established and in 1992 their first Vintage was unveiled. The company used the consulting services of one the world’s best known wine experts Michel Rolland and launched 32

☛  Avoid combining bitter food with high tannin wine as it tends to multiply bitter tastes. Understand the six grape varieties and their key characteristics: Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon – these six varietals account for 80% of all the wine sold in the world Pairing suggestions: Sparkling whites, Rich whites and Sweet white wines go best with fish. Rich white, medium and light red wines work well with white meat. Dry whites and Sparkling wine are ideal for vegetables while Sweet whites and dessert wine are perfect for desserts and sweets. While pairing wine with the right kind of food is important, some wine experts also believe in keeping it simple and suggest you go with the ‘mood’ than with the food.

the iconic La Reserve label in the late 1990s. Exactly 25 years after the first grape varietals were planted, I walked through the same vineyard near Dodballapur in the Nandi Hills that now produces wine-grapes for the La Reserve label. It’s part of the Oenotourism (Wine tourism) initiative led by the Wine Club (www.wineclub.in) that organises wine trails, wine tasting and wine education sessions in Maharashtra and Karnataka. In Karnataka I had a choice of the emerging Cauvery valley region near Mysore or the Nandi Hills area - the original home of the state’s wine industry and I chose this historic belt without a second thought. The Wine Club’s handpicked guide, Jai first led me through the celebrated vineyard

Wine barrelling

located very close to Grover’s Winery and it became obvious why wine-grapes thrive in this area. It’s a mix of the dry landscape, high day time temperatures and low night time temperatures and the ideal altitude of about 900 to 1000 metres above sea level that all play a part. The second Vineyard is a newer and more scenic setting with a winding road offering stunning views. After a quick walk through the two Grover vineyards in the area it was time to head back to the Grover Winery for a crash course on wine making. The process for Red and White Wines are different, while the Red wines are fermented on their skins, white wines are pressed separating juice from skins before fermentation. This is the key reason why red wines are rich in anti-oxidants. Once the fermentation is complete, wines are shifted to large oak casks or stainless steel containers for the maturation process. The bottling and labelling process then follows; it can take 4-5 months from grape to bottle. The Wine Club completed the visit with a tasting and wine appreciation session that featured five wines. Grover’s dry yet smooth Red Wine La Reserve that is an 80:20 blend of Cabarenet Sauvignon and Shiraz was the show stealer. But there were two other wines that made a big impression – the light 2011 Viognier White and the 2011 Shiraz Rose. And thankfully for me I could sample more than one for the road because I didn’t have to get behind the wheel on the way back to Bengaluru. by ASHWIN RAJGOPALAN

Phuket has a total of 39 pristine islands, mostly to the east and south of the main island. The most popular of these are Koh Racha Yai, Koh Racha Noi, Koh He, Koh Lon and Koh Mai Ton. In terms of historical heritage and culture, traditional SinoPortuguese architecture can be seen all around Phuket town.

Karon Beach Karon beach is huge. And inspite of two massive resorts and more people than you’ll find on Kata and Rawai together, there’s still enough sand and space for everyone. The northernmost part of Karon beach is the loveliest with underwater visibility of the kind you only see on television adverts. Nearer to shore there’s a network of lanes which are peppered with all-cuisine restaurants and bars. Further back is the Karon Park with its very own artificial lake and mountain backdrop.

Patong Beach Patong beach is Phuket’s equivalent of Baga and Calingute beaches in Goa. A complete riot of commerce where you can possibly buy anything under the sun from Italian coffee to a yoga mat. That doesn’t detract from the unrivalled beauty of the white sand beach fronted by a picture-perfect bay. Patong is Phuket’s new centre, even busier than Phuket town. You can go diving, to a

spa, shopping at one of the biggest malls in the country, and treat yourself to a feast – on the street or in a fine-dining restaurant. It’s all happening at Patong.

Kamala Beach Kamala beach is more popular with folks who’re in Phuket for long stays, and who’s rather not partake in the manic excitement of tourists who want to fit in the Phuket experience in three days. A magnificent teal bay and strewn with palms the beach is one of the most peaceful in Phuket. The waters are perfect for snorkelling and the beachfront for walking. Take a stroll along the well-defined trail lined with restaurants and shops.

Surin Beach Surin beach is drop dead, knock-the-wind-outof-your-lungs gorgeous. And when you’re done gawking there’s a choice of high-end resorts, spas and fantastic beachfront restaurants. April 2013 GO NOW

huket Town

On the southern part of the island, Phuket town is an interesting little hotspot of cafes, old houses, shops, art galleries and Chinese shrines. The cultural heritage of Phuket is most visible here; espy the Portuguese architecture houses, and dive into little bars with live music in the evenings. Phuket town is the oldest settlement on the island, and offers the most inexpensive hotels on the island. Even better it’s only a half-hour ride away from most of the popular beaches.

Big Buddha The most visible landmark on the island, the Big Buddha is a shrine located on a hilltop, and offers the most expansive views of Phuket. From the Big Buddha plateau you can see Kata bay, Karon beach and the Chalong harbour in one long sweep. Equally impressive is the alabaster crafted Buddha on which craftsmen continue to work even today.

Shrine of the Serene Light It’s easy to miss unless you’re looking for it. And it’s well worth seeking out – the Shrine of the Serene Light in Phuket town is the most

striking of all Chinese temples on the island. If you’re into art then you’ll notice the intricate Taoist etchings on the walls. Buy some incense, fresh flowers or candles which are available from vendors outside the 150-year-old shrine.

Khao Rang Northwest of the town centre, Khao Rang is a hillock which rewards those who take up the challenge of a moderate climb with a bird’s-eye view of the city. Excellent option

for an afternoon with the family when you’ve had your fill of fun on the beaches.

Phuket Thaihua Museum If you’re a history buff then you’ll enjoy browsing through the photos, exhibits and assortment of relwics from Phuket’s history at the Thaihua museum. The museum is appropriately set in an old Portuguese house which imparts a sense of history to the whole experience. April 2013 GO NOW

Diving & Snorkelling Given the economics and the range of dive sites available, it’s no surprise that more scuba divers head to Thailand than to anywhere else in the world. It’s cheaper to become a certified diver in Thailand than in India. The PADI courses last over three days and cost just about 15000 Baht while the famous Surin & Similan island marine national parks to the north of Phuket offer some of the most gorgeous diving sites you’re likely to find anywhere. Even if you’re a recreational diver, Phuket’s central location means that you can head to numerous dive sites in the neighbouring islands of Ko Phi Phi and Ko Lanta. Ko Raya Noi (Racha Noi) and Ko Raya Rai (Racha Rai), which are just off Phuket, are popular with amateur and first-time divers and teeming with soft corals, manta Rays and whale sharks. You don’t need to prepare much – the hundreds of dive shops in Phuket rent out equipment and will pair you up with other divers for trips. Expect to fork out about 4000 Baht for a one-day trip (which includes equipment). If you’d rather just snorkel, then head for Phuket’s western coast – masks, fins and snorkels can be rented for 250 Baht.

Horse Riding Can’t get the image of a lady riding a bareback horse on a beach out of your mind? If that’s what catches your fancy then head to Rawai beach where a number of operators run horse rides in the surrounding jungles and on the beach itself.

Surfing and Sea Kayaking Most of the cliffs overlooking the beaches in Phuket have gorgeous semi-submerged caves which can only be entered in a kayak. For those who haven’t experienced guiding a kayak through a cave, there’s nothing quite 42

like the feeling of unmitigated adventure that it evokes. For the less adventurous, there are canoe tours to neighbouring islands including Ao Phang Nga. The monsoon transforms Phuket into a surfer’s delight. Kalim and Kata beaches get waves of up to three metres which are navigable only by experienced surfers. For the newbies, or for those who’re looking for more gentle swells, Nai Yang beach offers sheltered and easy waves to learn how to surf.

Kite boarding and Yachting Kite boarding has fast picked up amongst the most popular sports in Phuket, mirroring the sports’ growth all over the world. The Rawai, Karon and Nai Yang are hubs for seasoned Kite boarders as well as amateurs hoping to pick up the sport. Walking along the harbour or any of the smaller shores of Phuket is a bit like getting a crash course in the history of sailing; right from old wooden dhow to fancy 100-ft yachts can be seen bobbing, anchored off-shore. Phuket attracts a slew of yachts from around the world – it serves as a fun port of call for people sailing further east, and to Australia.

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT

The best part about Phuket is that family entertainment doesn’t necessarily have to be something adults don’t enjoy as much. Head to Phuket Fantasea – a cornucopia of animas and acrobats brought to life with crazy pyrotechnics and special effects. On the wildlife front, don’t miss the Phuket Aquarium, Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre and the Siam Niramit Cultural Show on Thai arts and culture, is a must-watch.

Thai Kickboxing You’ve probably already seen Thai kickboxing on television; over the past few years ‘Muay-Thai,’ has evolved from a local martial art, to a globally recognised contact sport. You can learn how Muay Thai in Phuket if you’ve got the time, and more importantly the inclination. Even practice bouts in the ring are no tame affairs, and you’d be best prepared for a very real fight. Rawai Muay Thai is the most famous and sought after Thai kickboxing gym in Phuket.

Bicycling Elephant rides are passé for Indians. Why not go the ‘green,’ way and rent a bicycle to explore Phuket? Besides being a really convenient way to get around you can also sign up for a bicycle tour through the Khao Phra Thaew Royal Wildlife & Forest Reserve, and around the fantastic beaches and waterfalls in Thai Muang.

Most hotels require two-week’ notice to organise an Indian wedding.

LEGALITIES

A marriage in Thailand is legal only when officially registered. When this is done, the union is recognized throughout the world. Non-Thais must first get a letter of affirmation, in their native language. This is a declaration that you are free to marry. This letter must be taken to your embassy in Bangkok to be certified. Once this is complete, it must be translated into Thai and then certified again by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Tel: +66 (0)2 575 1056 – 59 or +66 (0)2 981 7171). You can turn up at the Register Office on any working day, produce all the relevant documentation and within 30 minutes leave with a marriage certificate. THERAPIES WITHOUT FRONTIERS:

SOUKYA

It is a holistic health centre, where everyone is mentioned as patients has stretched the meaning of hospitalisation beyond four antiseptic walls. Here, patients stay in a calm atmosphere and learn about the ancient wellness practices. It perfectly integrates traditional medical systems and complimentary therapies to speed up the healing process. 68

f it’s good enough for you then its good enough for the British Royal Family. Last year Prince Charles’ wife, seeking relief from unspecified complaints, chose this very special place to soothe her uneasiness. Earlier, we too had experienced the effortless therapies of Soukya. Though we are not afflicted by the problems of an uncertain crown we can certainly endorse the effectiveness of the therapies of this unique, holistic, clinic. We learnt about its special approach to wellness from the very charming Suja Isaac of the husband-and-wife team that conceived and drives Soukya. We sat with her in her office while a lamp wafted the scent of lemons and she told us the philosophy behind Soukya. We melded it with our research and reaffirmed our belief that Soukya was unique.

Till the 19th century, medicine had been a largely free-form discipline, worldwide. By trial and error, humans across the globe had developed their own ways of treating their afflictions. They had used herbs and balms, smoke, incantations, starvation, bleeding, purging, punctures and tiny doses of poison. Then, in 1856, French Chemist Louis Pasteur, set western medicine on the hunt for germs as the root cause of most diseases. The presence of specific bacteria could be diagnosed by the symptoms of the disease. Cure the symptoms and you were likely to cure the disease. The medical system that grew out of this view is commonly referred to as Allopathy. But though it accounted for many ailments, it could not explain a whole range of mental afflictions, among other things. In 1895, Austrian Doctor Sigmund Freud said that mental diseases were caused

by childhood experiences. When patients were made aware of them, their mental state improved. He founded Psychoanalysis. With the rapid spread of the western colonial empires, these two systems dominated the world of medicine till 1947, when the empires began to crumble following the independence of India. Long suppressed indigenous and other systems of medicine, like Ayurveda and homeopathy, introduced by German Physician Samuel Hahnemann in 1810, and the Islamic Unani, began to reassert themselves. People started to ask “If one system of medicine does not work, perhaps a combination of systems might?” They reached out to the old Chinese methods of acupuncture and acupressure. They expressed an interest in Tibetan medicine, developed in isolation for many centuries till the Dalai Lama, and his followers, sought sanctuary in India in 1959. They re-visited the ancient use of mud-packs and hydrotherapy. The age of Holistic Health had been born. Soukya is a Holistic Health Centre.

her mother. We would have talked to them but we were already late for our introductory medical examination and so we hurried on. Every patient has a medical examination every morning but the initial one is most important. We learnt later that a panel of doctors … a homeopath, an allopath and an ayurvedic physician .. discuss the report and decide on the course of holistic treatment. If the treatment recommended by one system comes into conflict with another, they seek the assistance of specialists of other systems. A Tibetan doctor could be called in from the hospital of Tibetan Medicine in Bangalore, or a psychiatrist or endocrinologist, or even … in rare cases… a practitioner of the ancient system of Leeching. on the patient’s body through a moistened cotton swab, and removes them when their work has been done. The little creatures are allowed to rest for a week before they are used again. We recalled that western physicians were once called ‘leeches” because Leeching w a s a n acce p te d treatment till the early 20th century. It is A massage room now being revived by modern physicians. Though our separate examinations, in the male and female wings of the Therapy Centre, were thorough, we had told the physicians that we had not come here to be cured of any ailments, but merely as observers. Nevertheless, they did find a touch of oedema in the feet of one of us, a slight tendency to hypertension. We had been traveling by road for over a month, living out of suitcases, pushing ourselves; this was the very least we could have expected. We went to our separate therapy rooms, changed into disposable breech-clouts. One of us had a massage with herbal oils, the other had polished and rounded hot lava stones placed on the body. Both treatments were very relaxing. Soukya looks particularly magical at night, with the winding paths and flower-beds softly lit, insects strumming gently, and a feeling of all-enveloping serenity. Next morning the

estate was alive with birds. They chirped and flapped, preened themselves and whistled, clearly confident that they would not be harmed. In an ever shrinking world, people, too, revel in open spaces as if the huntergather crouched inside all of us longs to smell the earth, feel the wind, hear the sounds of the wilderness, stretch the sight to take in a distant horizon, taste the authenticity of natural food. In Soukya even the animals are fed organic grains and fodder so that they produce organic eggs and milk. We learnt that Soukya offers over sixty therapies and treatments drawn from a number of medical systems across the globe. Here, too, patients are taught the ancient wellness practices of tai chi, yoga and meditation keeping the body flexible and the mind stress-free. We met an Ozzie-Asian, Spring-Winter, couple here for the second time to sort out their age-racial problems and claimed that they had made “glowing progress.” Though all of us were called ‘patients’, this was clearly a hospital that had stretched the meaning of hospitalisation far, far, beyond four antiseptic walls. Our species had spread out of Africa, colonized the globe, adapted to varying environments, cloned into seemingly separately races by the evolutionary process known as physioplasticity . The long history of mankind has been embedded in our genes. In Soukya we were able to access the wellness techniques that our ancestors had developed over countless generations of migration and settlement all across our blue planet. Obviously, Soukya is a product of our Age of the Aspirational Indian.. It needed our rich base of international travel and the IT revolution in which to spread its roots. It needed the shrinking of the world into a global village in which every person is our neighbour and we have the ability to reach out and use Therapies Without Frontiers. Therapies that can soothe those troubled by their reluctance to accept the demands of the implacable tides of time. Text & photos by HUGH & COLLEEN GANTZER

THERE IS NO END TO ADVENTURE IN TRAVEL

Leo Le Bon, global wanderer and the father of adventure travel, tells Thommen Jose about the first trek that started the genre way back in 1967, the shelling from across the border which forced him to abort his Ladakh trek, how glamping is an inevitable development and where adventure is headed to.

Y

our breath quickens, pulse races. There is a spinning feeling like bouts of vertigo. But it is not, it’s that heady rush of adrenaline. You might be plunging down an abyss or chasm roaring your lungs out with an elastic rope attached to your ankle, taking on the rapids in a frothy river, groping your way up abutting mountainsides… Then, you could also be just gliding softly over the undulating sand dunes in a hot air balloon, zip-lining across old forts a la Batman or pedaling your way over slippery, shoddy moraines and tracks originally intended for more sure-footed mountain goats. You could even be – now, this is a new one – doing anything from watching a cultural performance, visiting the ghettos probably chipping in with some empowering lessons of life for good measure, following the darker, forgotten corners of the city seeking that elusive vinyl, looking up an ancestor in the city’s graveyard – anything that is mild enough to sensitise us to new cultures, traditions and sensibilities. It could even be following the trails of a disaster or visiting areas affected by terrorism and other geopolitical upheavals – anything strong enough to awaken us from a slumbering existence, kicking us alive. Probably feeling lucky too, in the bargain. That is adventure travel for you, the long and short of it. This rapidly growing offshoot of travel has come a long way since the cornerstones were first laid, rather unknowingly, in 1967. My first brush with adventure travel goes back over a decade – when I was chosen by the Forest Department of my homestate Kerala to realise their promised transparency in the tiger census survey – I was one of the very few who applied, all of whom who were selected. “When the tiger twitches its tail, it is Leo with wife Nadia

The father of adventure travel looks back: Leo Le Bon

From ‘father’ of adventure travel’ to ‘grandfather’ what was the transition like? That is just what they called me – it’s just a year thing. I still do what I have always loved doing which is travel. Adventure travel just happened to be the way I travel; the same way others travel for sightseeing, pilgrimages or to just lie back with a book.

Why did you choose Nepal in 1967? The connection goes way back to the 1963 expedition of the Mount Everest by Americans. It was around the same time that I came into contact with Bishop and Colonel James Rogers, who was the military attaché to the UK Embassy in Kathmandu, also a soldier and climber. James was so much in love with the place that he was settled in Nepal till his last; you could say that some of his love for the land got rubbed off on me. He was instrumental in me choosing Nepal

for my first venture. Besides the adventure angle, I must say that the trip to Nepal was a personal one as well.

From your first expedition you have done things the most professional way – like Bishop to lead. But many expeditions today are callous when it comes to competency. What is the toll? Not ju s t Bi shop, Ste ck to o was on board when I started Mountain Travel. We did and continue to give the best for enthusiasts – either out of Mountain Sobek or Wanderlust where I currently consult adventure and travel companies from around the world. I may not be that active in the affairs anymore, but guess I can safely say that extensive commercialisation is the bane today; there are too many people in the fray.

Four years ago, aged 72, you led another group to Everest

TRAVEL : ICON The beginning: The momentous Nepal trek in 1967

Base Camp to celebrate the 40th anniversary of your first trek. How did the reliving go? Needle s s to say, I wa s ver y pumped up about reliving the experiences of over four decades ago. But unfortunately, I must say it didn’t turn out to be as pleasant as I had hoped it would be. There were too many people out there. Besides I fell ill at Khumbu and had to take the next flight out.

You said somewhere that among the areas that will be hit hardest by climate change is Tibet. Tibet is a place I will always hold close to my heart – the land and the people are so beautiful, so intoxicating, even after all these years. In the eventuality of irreversible climate changes, they are the people who have the most to lose. Their tracts of agriculture lands are irrigated by the Himalayan glaciers only. And as you know, agriculture is their mainstay, along with their livestock. In such a situation, I have no idea what they will do or whom they will turn to.

Glamping – more luxury, less adventure. Is it a good or a bad development? Being an avid traveller and adventurer, I am aware of this latest development where you combine the wild rush of camping in the great outdoors with the

luxury and creature comforts one is so used to. But I must tell you that I have only heard of it and never done it myself. Going by the kind of rising popularity it enjoys, I feel glamping is an inevitable development as people of every kind turns to adventure travel today.

from active busine s s and I cannot give much input here. However, I am aware of the issue and I am open to any contribution adventure travel can do to throw more light on global warming. Then again, adventure travel is not any worse than any other activity here.

Your 1986 expedition into Kashmir and Ladakh had to be aborted. Then, with the kind of prevailing geopolitical realities, wasn’t even setting out risky in the first place?

Where is adventure travel heading to today?

It is indeed true that today we need to check the prevailing situations in any country before we set out to. But I must say we don’t always do that, especially in those early days when communication technologies weren’t so developed as they are now. The choice was indeed risky – as it turned out later. Half way through the climb, we were shelled nonstop by the Pakistani soldiers who might have taken us for infiltrators I don’t know. This was a joint Indo-US expedition and we decided to back out due to security reasons. Still we pushed on despite the attack till we reached the advance camp at Siachen at 5,400 metres.

Adventure travel is a global phenomenon today. Have you given any thoughts to offset the carbon footprint that is an offshoot? It’s over 20 years since I retired

More people want to experience the great outdoors but sadly their trekking and camping experience is very limited. Instead of sleeping out in the wide open in sleeping bags or on the ground, they prefer a comfortable bed by the fireplace. To make the experience rewarding, we have to open up to the local people, the conditions and amenities. Leo, once travelling in India, saw a baraat on the street and got off his car to join the dancers. He ended up meeting the groom and the bride as well as getting an invite for chai and cookies from the bride’s father.

75 today, do you still yearn for adventure? It never ends. Earlier it used to be mountaineering, then rock climbing, trekking, river rafting, kayaking and sailing. Now I do long distance cycling and mountain biking. I missed the South Pole Expedition and of course the Everest itself. I have only myself to blame for this – a weak lung capacity from birth.

calculating the distance to leap (to get you)…” the prep classes had sent goosebumps of excitement mushrooming all over me. That one week over a decade ago in the interior most forest was my initiation to adventure travel – a term which I didn’t even knew existed. Back at the university campus, I pored over numerous resources to find out what could give me the same fix. It was then that I first came across Leo Le Bon. I don’t exactly remember when I thus first read about Leo, he was the ‘father’ or ‘grandfather’ of adventure travel – an address he dismisses as a ‘time’ thing. But I lapped up all the stuff written about him, soaked in his undiminished energy and passion for the unknown as envied him ardently for the luckies. Typically Leo, beginning a genre was the last thing on his mind when he set out to Nepal in 1967 with a bunch of people to trek over the Annapurna Range. What he and his trekking partners – renowned climbers Barry Bishop and Allen Steck – had on mind was just, well, adventure. “We wanted to do all this stuff, go all over the world and climb mountains. But we didn’t have the money so we just said, ‘Well, let the clients pay for it.’” Marking the official coming-to of adventure travel was also the founding of their company, Mountain Travel Sobek, two years later. Currently consulting travel adventure companies out of Wanderlust Consulting, Leo spoke to Wanderink on his Ladakh expedition, the inevitability of glamping and what comes in the way our adventure yearnings. L

athmar Holi is celebrated by the villagers of two adjacent villages, Barsana and Nandagaon in Uttar Pradesh about four hours’ drive north of Delhi in the sacred land of Vrindavana for two consecutive days about a week before the full moon day when the rest of the country celebrates Holi the festival of colour.

Following the tradition set by Sri Krishna Himself during His earthly pastimes as a young boy of Nandgaon who adventured to Barsana village where His eternal consort Sri Radha resides to unfold their pastimes of conjugal love. Till today the villagers of Nandgaon visit the nearby village of Barsana where Srimati Radharani awaits them

in a beautiful hilltop temple, the villagers of Nandgaon dance, chant and sing all the way Barsana, they are welcomed by the villagers of barsana who first shower laddoos on them, then the village ladies come out with stick in their hand to lovingly chastise the young men of nandgaon for invading their village to play Holi with them.

A resident of varsana village takes out her Krishna deity out to let Him play Holi thwe festival of colour.

The youth of Nandgaon, the village in Vrindavana where Lord Krishna appeared, pours colour on the residents of Varsana, the adjascent village where Radharani appeared, to enact the celebration of Holi as initiated by the divine couple, Radha and Krishna as their transcendental past times.

The next day the scene changes as the villagers of Barsana visits Nandgaon in the temple of Krishna Balaram, the young village boys of nandgaon get their dreams fulfilled in soaking their friends from barsana village to their heart content and the ladies or the gopis of the nandgaon village get to lovingly beat up the young men of the varsana village this time and put colours on them to enact the pastimes of the eternal couple od Sri Radha Krishna who initiated this festival of colour- Holi. It’s been over a week since I returned from Vrindavana experiencing and photographing the Lathmar Holi. Still struggling to brush off colours off my cameras, lenses

At times visibility is overpowered by one colour and next moment as the wind clears it another cloud of colours takes over, it creates a surreal, psychedelic scene, the villagers keep singing kirtan softly and loudly sometimes as they meditate and worship the deities with colour, this continues

and toe nails what to speak of my mind which is still saturated with multitudes of colour I saw pouring over me from all directions, back in the freezing winter of southern hemisphere now, life is mostly black & white in the west, the warmth of the colours of Holi and the vrajabasis (the locals of Vrindavana) keep beckoning me to play Holi with them, and add some colour to life, can’t wait to be back for the next Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon, when is the lathmar Holi next year? LUXURY A TASTE OF FRANCE

YOU DREAM IT, THEY CREATE IT

Novelty can never go out of vogue and those with resources to invest constantly strive to attain that which is new. GoNow spoke with Armelle Nicolas and Alexandre Le Baun about the inspired business model of bespoke holidays to Europe by French Touch Travel.

N

ot your regular travel agency, this one is willing to meet you at home to design a trip exactly as per your desires. Even the most eccentric ideas are sure to find a receptive audience with its representatives, who claim to have the means to arrange for anything from a fortnight in a village in the Alps and a week in Paris with a personal shopper to a day spent not just tasting wine, but learning exactly how it is made. Their clientele is niche and they take pride in the emphasis of quality over economies of scale. Days and days of planning and complete attention are promised to those who approach French Corte - Corsica Touch Travel and as a policy, they do not offer any pre-made packages. “Our clients want something personal and we are here to design it for them. Nothing can be finalized till we understand exactly what they would like”, says Nicolas. Speaking about the various types of combinations they can conjure, Nicolas and Le Baun were passionate about the France that no internet search can reveal and the multitude of experiences Indians traveling abroad are yet to live. For families with young children, they are ready to set up a na nny, c hauf feur and chef at service around the clock. If a honeymooning couple seeks a fantasy getaway, a private cruise and chateau can be made available. A number of Chamonix Golf their idea s for re tirement holidays fascinated us, especially the prospect of golfing on the island of Corsica and moving on to Barcelona for a tour of the Gaudi marvels. The distinct personalities of different clients are afforded close scrutiny whilst the company recommends holidays to them. “Somebody may come to us asking to meet an artist while someone may just want to walk along the Louvre. At times, we suggest things they do not explicitly ask for but may enjoy as per our understanding of their choices. I would suggest tours along racing circuits or motorcycle sports to peo-

ple who love fast vehicles and I would put together a soirée in Monaco for a bachelorette party. Even business trips or conferences that need a touch of luxury fall under our expertise. So you see, too many different things can be done in Europe and we are here to use our years of knowing where we come from and the time spent living in India to give our clients exactly what they would like”, says Le Baun. When asked about the ideal quiet retreat, they threw light on an intriguing grape-based treatment near Bordeaux that would suit somebody looking to spend time on personal rejuvenation without the much ado that comes with hopping from one city to the other and threw in a personal recommendation in favor of Prague during the winter as a romantic destination for two. Giving due consideration to the season one is planning for is crucial and is emphasized upon by French Touch Travel, since not everything would be possible at all times in a year. Interestingly, the company takes responsibility for complete comfort even after presenting the holiday plan to its clients; a local contact point is maintained in each area they visit, available for any and every emergency or whim. It is impossible to ignore the influence of the online market and other travel consultancies to business, but French Touch Travel seeks to “compete along the quality of advice” as opposed to any other parameter. A minimum of approximately INR 5 Lakhs per person as a part of a group would be required for a week long holiday crafted by the company. The trips planned by this group don’t stop at holidays, they aim at creating invaluable memories that time only enhances. The philosophy they attach to travel is remarkably ethereal, sees living other cultures as a life lesson and believes that, as shared by Alexandre Le Baun, “when you talk about experience, you need travel”. by SHIRIN RAI GUPTA
