Tracings A Letter from Dr. Wes Avram

Dear friends, Remember when plane trips included conversations with strangers (at least if you got on alone)? You never knew what being hurled through the sky in a tin tube might bring out in people. But then came computers, and earphones, and video screens—to leave us each in our own worlds. Privacy gained. But something lost. I got on a plane recently, prepared for the journey. As soon as I could, I pulled out my computer and readied my earbuds, so I could focus on a sermon or something—lost in my own world. The person next to me took her computer out too, and then her credit card to buy Internet so she could get her own business done. But the third person in our row would have nothing to do with this. He wanted to talk. And so he began, first with my neighbor—all about Dr. Wes Avram, his adventures and interests and life's work. I listened Senior Pastor in, intrigued by how brash he seemed. After a while, my neighbor gave up on her work and gave in to the encounter. Pretty soon she was as friendly to me, too, and pulled me in. She even shared her snacks. I learned about her fascinating work in sustainability technology. Turns out she works for a company that one of our own Pinnacle members once led. We then discovered that he is an orchestra conductor, and an active member of the very church I was heading to for a meeting. We knew several folks in common. We had a delightful conversation about sacred music, jazz masses, and more. He knew of Pinnacle, and of our sanctuary. I even own a CD he recorded! We went back and forth between three-way and two-way conversations. They were discoveries, each. And we even did a little touch of work here and there. It was delightful. I know an elderly saint who told me once that whenever she enters a crowded place where she's going to be for a while, she prays for the people she'll be spending time with. She prays that they might be the people God would bring to her, and that she might be the person God might bring for them. In a world where we've become so lost in our screens and our Please see TRACINGS on next page 2

What does it mean to be Presbyterian–yesterday, today, and tomorrow? Who are we? How do we live the faith? And do we have a future? We know things are changing, but what does that mean? Rather than lectures in church history, in this series of talks our Senior Pastor will offer a view of what the traditions behind the PCUSA have given the world, why we shape the church as we do, and what might be needed now. October 9 Where? Our Tradition: We had a point! November 20 How? Our Governance: We're more Catholic than you think! December 11 Now? Our Future: Does God need us?

TRACINGS from previous page business and our distractions, she seeks encounter, surprise, and blessing. I remembered her during that plane ride, and I resolved to do more of what she does. For on that trip I was reminded that the Spirit can bring us to each other in surprising and good ways, and in ways we would never predict—as long as we let Her. I hope we will. Yours in the Spirit,

Wes Avram Pinnacle Vistas • October 2016

Interface: Faith & Science @ Pinnacle Faith & Science Roundtable Meeting Wednesday, October 5 | 7:00 pm | Chapel Library Recently, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that it was moving forward with the funding of research involving human-animal chimeras. This line of research has the potential to significantly advance human health and alleviate suffering through applications like growing human organs for transplant, but it raises several questions that touch on what it means to be human and the bounds of scientific inquiry. Join us as we discuss the rationale for the NIH decision and wrestle with the tension it creates. The Faith & Science Roundtable meets monthly to discuss issues at the interface between faith and science in a respectful environment where it is ok to be a novice, an expert, or somewhere in between. All who are interested in the conversation, including youth, are welcome to attend. CONTACT: faithandscience@pinnaclepres.org

MUSIC AT PINNACLE

Meaningful Music Glorifies God By Dr. Sharon Hansen Those of us at Pinnacle comprise a community of believers which comes together to praise the Lord, many of us through music. While we always strive for beauty and precision, Pinnacle’s church musicians use the power of worshipping through music to help others worship with us. While we musicians work hard to "get things right,” we work harder to proclaim the Gospel message through music, reaching into our souls to share that same spirit of Christ’s love for all. The music staff peruses much music for the purpose of leading and assisting worship every week. From our preschoolers learning to chime, to our most seasoned choir members finding some new biblical interpretation through song, it is all done to glorify God. I encourage you to feel the presence, power, and inspiration of God in your life through our worshipful music. Contact Dr. Sharon Hansen, Interim Director of Music and Arts, for more information at shansen@pinnaclepres.org.

About the Organ By Brandon Burns Many people come to church and see and hear the organ but don’t know much about how it works or why it sounds the way it does. This will be the first in a series of articles about the organ to explain what goes on inside it and how it makes music. The Richards, Fowkes and Co. organ in the sanctuary is based on German and Dutch organs from around 1650-1750. These organs were built to lead congregational singing. In Germany, they led the Lutheran churches in singing chorales, and in the Netherlands, they led the Dutch Reformed churches in singing psalms. Even today, organs built in this style are considered to 12

be the best for leading hymns because of their combination of power, clarity, and rich tone. The Richards,Fowkes organ also has the ability to gently accompany choirs and even soloists thanks to the addition of some French Romantic sounds not normally found in this type of organ. Even though its core is German and Dutch Baroque, the addition of these few sounds allows it to successfully play almost all styles of music from Renaissance to Romantic and modern music. Next time, I will discuss the pipes and how they work.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES AT PINNACLE

October Church School overcomes fear! We will spend the month of October looking at normal, everyday people in the Bible who accomplished extraordinary things. But, we see that these people were not super-heroes, just regular folks who knew that God would always be with them—they overcame fear with God’s presence. Our memory verse, Joshua 1:9, reminds the children to: Be strong and brave. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope. I am the Lord your God. I will be with you everywhere you go (NIrV). We need our children to understand that, because they believe and trust in God, they have a unique source of strength and courage. There will be times when we’re going to be afraid. But we can trust in a God that is bigger than us. Because of God, we can find the strength to be courageous, everyday heroes.

Club 45 Goes to the Movies! Sunday, October 9 | 3:00 - 5:00 pm | Harkins 101 Drop your 4th and 5th grade students off to enjoy a movie with their church friends. Exact movie and time will be disclosed prior to the event. RSVP to Kelly Horn at khorn@pinnaclepres.org.
