Honoring the Hyltons

In March of 2001, Pinnacle hired Brent Hylton as Director of Music and Marilyn Hylton as Associate Director of Music, and on August 1, the Hyltons began their ministry among us. Marilyn focused her attention on developing bell choirs, and before long, had a graded bell choir ministry with children, youth and adults. Brent directed a growing chancel choir, developed a fully-graded choral program, served as organist and began to further develop the Pinnacle Concert Series, which is currently concluding its most successful season. On August 1, the Hyltons will begin a new chapter in their lives together, as they retire from their ministry at Pinnacle. Four opportunities (please see below and page 12) have been created to enable us to show our collective appreciation to this amazing couple. Please join us as we honor, celebrate and say thank you to our dear friends, Brent and Marilyn Hylton.

A time to share stories and express your personal gratitude for the ministry of

Tracings A Letter from Dr. Wes Avram

Dear friends, May. In the life and rhythm of Pinnacle, May has been our traditional sort of end of program year time. Seems like it was just a few weeks ago that we were kicking off the year with Sunday School registration! Wow. Much to celebrate. Much to remember. More than can be described and more than any one person knows. But we can believe and know that God has been among us and working through us. What more, really, needs to be said? Church life is like human life, and like family life. It has grand and great seasons of discovery and purpose, periods of rethinking and re-envisioning, periods of wrestling and creative tension, and periods of both discovery and welcoming of a new future. But what's always true is that we are led by Christ, beyond anything of our own imaginations. And so we trust Him into the future. I hope you feel His guiding presence in your own life and will stay close to Him in all that lies ahead for you and Dr. Wes Avram, yours. And as you move into the summer, I hope you'll Senior Pastor remember that God's house is always open!! In the coming weeks we'll have chances to say thank you and farewell as Brent and Marilyn Hylton retire. I also hope you'll offer prayers of support for those who will be discerning who will be working to bring new music staff. And don't forget that we'll be here every Sunday, no matter how hot it is outside! We'll also enjoy several opportunities through the summer. To name just a few, we'll have a fellowship weekend over Mother's Day, some summer educational programs, Vacation Bible School, our first international mission trip for youth, our now annual family camp, and more. And the work of the church will go on all the way to that next Sunday School registration! Prayers for all of you who are away over the summer. Stay in touch! And to those who are here: we'll be seeing you! Many blessings,

Wes Avram 2

OUR COMMON LIFE

Welcome Scott! Fulfilling a position that has been vacant since early October, the Rev. Scott Fischer has joined the Pinnacle staff as our new Director of Operations (part-time). Scott brings a wealth of relevant experience, a deep knowledge of church life, and a love for Pinnacle. He and his wife, Pam, moved to the area recently from Lancaster, PA, where Scott was the successful Executive Director of the Lancaster County Council of Churches. They fell in love with Scottsdale years ago. Pam, herself a retired pastor, has become an active member of our choir and regular participant in many parts of our church life. Accountable to our Senior Pastor, Scott will oversee daily operations, including finance, property, and administration. As any larger role is shaped, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, we’ll support Scott in this administrative role and benefit from him being in it. Pray for Scott as he begins this important work for Pinnacle, and give him a warm welcome!

MISSION AT PINNACLE

Annual Backpack Drive Begins Please help us provide new backpacks and school supplies to kids in need. As we have done in previous years, we will be donating backpacks and school supplies to Vista del Camino. The need is significant for all grades. Last year Vista del Camino provided “back to school” assistance to over 800 girls and boys. It should be noted that Vista del Camino will only take new backpacks and supplies. Suggested supplies include scissors, glue sticks, sharpened #2 pencils, colored pencils, colored markers, pens, rulers, spiral notebooks, and ruled paper (college or wide). If you prefer to donate money, please do so through the church office, and clearly note that the contribution is for the Backpack Ministry. Donated items may be dropped off at the church office or in the boxes at the exits of the Sanctuary and Chapel. You may start donating at any time. Vista del Camino needs to collect supplies in May and June for distribution in July. If you have any questions, please contact Roselyn O’Connell at vdc@pinnaclepres.org. Thank you for your generosity.

OUR COMMON LIFE

Help Establish the Hylton Music Ministry Fund For more than fifteen years the music ministry at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church has been a place to deepen our connection with God, explore and strengthen our individual creativity, and celebrate the Creator through the glorious gift of music under the direction of Brent and Marilyn Hylton. This ministry has reached out to our children, youth, members and visitors alike and touched the singers, ringers, instrumentalists, and listeners — all have had the opportunity to find their place in the music ministry at Pinnacle. As a tribute to these years of dedicated service to our music ministry, a special fund to honor the Hyltons has been established in the Pinnacle Presbyterian Church Foundation. The purpose of this fund is to make certain that resources are in place to ensure the music excellence fostered by the Hyltons and valued by our congregation and guests will continue in the future. The funds will be managed by the Foundation and will be used to continue the work of our choirs, singers, chimers, ringers and ensembles as directed by the Director of Music and Session solely to support all forms of the music ministry of the church. If you are interested in contributing to this fund, please notify a pastor, a Pinnacle Foundation Director or make your check to the Pinnacle Presbyterian Church Foundation with the notation "Hylton Music Ministry Fund" and send it to the Church Office.

Gift for the Hyltons If you would like to participate in a cash gift to be presented to Brent and Marilyn, please contact Lea Reinke at lreinke@pinnaclepres.org or 480-5859448 ext. 206. Checks for the dinner or the cash gift should be made payable to Pinnacle Presbyterian Church with appropriate notation on the memo line. 12

MUSIC AT PINNACLE

New Handbell Composition Honors Ken Brousseau Ken Brousseau was an active member of the Pinnacle Pealers before his death in May 2015. As a way to honor his love of ringing, the Pealers have commissioned a new composition for handbells. Hart Morris, an Oklahoma composer who directed a workshop at PPC in 2011, was asked to create a musical work based on Psalm 23. This text was one of Ken's favorites, and the resulting composition reflects the quiet confidence of both the Psalm and Ken's life. The Pealers will perform the premier of Psalm 23 during the 10 am worship service on May 8. Pinnacle Vistas • May 2016

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES AT PINNACLE

May Church School Tackles Contentment In our materialistic world, we tend to confuse our wants with our needs and our happiness with contentment. This May we will help children see that our life is not really “ours”, and that something radical happens when we look at our life and all that we have in it as gifts from God. We want to set our children up for a fulfilled life, rather than a life filled with things. Join us in May as we reorient our lives towards the gifts God offers us all and we seek to follow our memory verse from Philippians 4:12 (NIrV), “I have learned the secret of being content no matter what happens. I am content whether I am well fed or hungry. I am content whether I have more than enough or not enough.”

3rd and 4th Grade Bible Presentation Ceremony Sunday, May 1 | During 10:00 am Worship Service Join us for a new Children’s Ministries tradition as we promote our 3rd and 4th grade students through a special Bible presentation during the worship service. Each student will receive his or her own study Bible in recognition of a growing commitment to Christ and a public recognition of one’s faith.

Club 45 Invites 3rd Graders Sunday, May 22 | 1 - 4 pm CrackerJax Family Fun and Sports Park | 16001 N. Scottsdale Rd. It’s time to promote our newest Club 45 members! We invite all Pinnacle third and fourth grade students for an afternoon of fun on the bumper boats, putt-putt course, pizza, and go carts. RSVP by May 20 to Kelly Horn at khorn@pinnaclepres.org. 14

PINNACLE PRESBYTERIAN PRESCHOOL

Artistic Preschoolers In April, during Week of the Young Child, the Studio teachers created an art walk to celebrate the children and the beautiful creations that were made by each class. Understanding that God made all children capable to do amazing things, the Studio teachers offered various artistic mediums and a wide variety of materials to the classes. By using clay, collage, paints, paper, photography and other artistic methods, the children’s creative juices began flowing into magnificent works of art.
