All Church Family Camp
August 21-23 | Lost Canyon, Williams, AZ Cost: $130 for those 12 & older | $80 children under 12
We have talked about it, planned for it, and the time for Family Camp is finally here. This year we will look at the Book of Jonah, as there is much more to the story than just a whale. Our theme this year is Triple Dawg Dare. DARE to BE. DARE to LIVE. DARE to BELIEVE. Besides the amazing time of fellowship and study, you will have an opportunity to water slide, hit up the coffee shops, play basketball, GaGa ball, scale a climbing wall or hike a mountain. The bunk-style cabins have nice mattresses and linens. Please see CAMP on page 3

Tracings A Letter from Rev. Kelsy Brown
When I was growing up, Pluto was considered a planet. I was the kid who loved looking at the stars and planets and even had a favorite planet. My favorite was Jupiter, but Pluto was a close second. I loved the mysteriousness of Pluto, a planet so far away we could only imagine what was on it and what it looked like. And then a few years ago, Pluto got demoted to moon because scientists didn’t Rev. Kelsy Brown, believe it circled the sun. Poor Pluto, demoted to Associate Pastor nothing but a moon. for Membership It was only in the past few weeks that Pluto has and Mission again been in the news because of the recent photos taken by the New Horizon Spacecraft. Now some of the mysteries of Pluto have begun to be revealed. Pluto is a very cold and mountainous planet, and most likely circles the sun (which means it is a planet). We will always be learning more about Pluto and outer space, just like we will always be learning more about God. Scientists continue to study the mysteries of our Creator who made the intricacies of the human body, the beauty of our landscape and our vast universe. Theologians and pastors will always be able to talk about the deep well of theological questions. And each of us sitting in the pew will grow in a deeper relationship with God through Bible study, conversations, worship and life. This is one of the most wonderful and exciting parts of our faith. Our faith and life with Jesus grow as we continue to uncover the mysteries of how our world works, but more importantly, God’s relationship with us. He is present in the midst of life’s challenges, the tiny miracles that we witness and the promise to be with us always. I hope you have found ways to grow in your relationship with God this summer. I look forward to uncovering more of God’s mysteries in our life and ministry together.

MISSION AT PINNACLE
Pinnacle Joins Harmony Ministries to Dedicate a New Church On Sunday, June 28, 2015, seven individuals from Pinnacle, including Rev. Frank Harmon, attended a special dedication service for the newly finished Harmony Ministries Church in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Approximately 1,000 people came to the service, including delegations from LaSalle, Leogane and Thoman. The US delegations included folks from Arizona, New Jersey, Maryland and Maine. A combined choir of more than 100 sang the Hallelujah Chorus magnificently and brought tears to many eyes. The service included talented soloists and Pastor Luc’s children playing a viola duet. Each of the US visiting pastors spoke briefly, and, of course, everyone sang. The church is beautiful… the finishes, electrical, lighting, flooring, benches and decorative touches are all amazing. It’s very bright, airy, and there are many nice design features. The benches, much to our surprise, aren’t just benches — they’re beautiful pews with bookracks, communion cup holders, and open backs so the air can circulate. The 4

baptismal pool is raised and behind the chancel area, with glass in front so people can see the immersion. There’s a glass block window and an inset wooden cross above the baptismal pool. It was truly a remarkable religious experience for all who attended. The meaning and impact of Pinnacle’s support is clearer than ever, and Pastor Luc receives great support from the community. Harmony is an amazing ministry.

Consider a Group Gift to Pinnacle Our 25th Anniversary Gift Registry has been well received! More than 75 gifts have already been given thus far. A heartfelt THANK YOU to all those who have participated. If you have not had an opportunity to consider a gift, please check out the Registry at pinnaclepres.org/gift-registry to see the progress and the items yet to be fulfilled. Are you part of a group at Pinnacle that might be willing to pull together to sponsor one of the larger items on the list in celebration of our 25th Anniversary? Take the lead from the Men’s Fellowship Breakfast Group who generously made a donation of more than $3,000 to the Pinnacle Presbyterian Church Foundation. Perhaps a group might consider purchasing the chairs for Fellowship Hall to enjoy at events, classes or receptions. Another group may wish to purchase one of the outdoor seating areas for the Fellowship Hall patio to provide a lovely place to discuss the Bible and enjoy our beautiful weather. If you are a member of a Bible study group, Uncorked, Theology on Tap, Amigos, Los Locos, the Deacons, our Session or any other group at Pinnacle, please rally your group members to consider purchasing a gift. Finance / Stewardship / Capital Campaign As of July 10, 2015 We are not meeting our current budget obligations at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church, and we’re serious about needing your help to keep the lights on! We can report that June’s offerings came in at projection, based on prior year’s months of June, but they are not adequate to cover our approximate $150,000 of monthly operating expenses. If July, August and September come in at projection, again based on those same months in prior years, we will incur an operating deficit of approximately $120,000, which will necessitate further borrowing. We have already drawn down $150,000 on our line of credit, incurring a monthly interest cost of just under $1,000. $50,000 remains available. We need more cash now to meet our obligations. We all rely on our church and its many assets to fulfill our needs, accordingly, we need to give whatever possible to make sure our church survives…and thrives. Consequently; 1. Please pray 2. Keep current your existing pledge 3. Consider giving if you have not pledged 4. Consider adding to your current pledge. 10

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES AT PINNACLE
Everest VBS Focuses on Mission Last June, nearly 120 children and 70 volunteer leaders enjoyed a week on Everest, learning about God’s mighty power. The week-long Bible camp focused on themes such as God’s comfort, provision, healing, forgiveness, and love. To put these Bible studies into action, the children participated in three different mission projects. First, each child prepared his or her own “needy backpack” to share with someone their family encounters on the streets of Phoenix. These backpacks include necessary provisions such as bottled water, soap, toothpaste, canned foods, and clothing items like socks and hats. Then, the children supported the Vista del Camino Backpack Drive by bringing in new school supplies each day to help underprivileged youth in Scottsdale. The most exciting project, however, may have been the “change the world” effort. Each morning VBS participants brought in loose change to contribute to earthquake victims in Nepal. By the end of the week we had collected nearly $500, which was used to purchase items for hygiene supply kits. These supply kits included bandages, toothbrushes, combs, nail clippers, bar soap, towels and washcloths. Church School children assembled 120 hygiene kits the Sunday following Everest VBS and they were then sent to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance organization for distribution to those in need. The PDA shared our story on their website at http://tinyurl.com/pda-pcusa-ppc.

YOUTH MINISTRIES AT PINNACLE
Confirmation Information Meeting for Students and Their Parents Sunday, August 30 | 11:15 am | Teen Center Confirmation class is designed to help 8th-12th graders explore the many questions that come with taking a leap of faith in Christ. The goal of the class is to help individuals make an informed decision as to whether to make a public profession of faith in Jesus, the Christ, as their Lord and Savior, and to accept their responsibility in the life of Christ’s Church. There is no expectation that all participants will be, or must be, confirmed. We invite interested students and parents to our informational meeting Sunday, August 30. Confirmation class will begin in October. If you would like more information, contact Pastor Frank at fharmon@pinnaclepres.org. Confirmation registration information is available on our website at pinnaclepres.org/confirmation-class/. Hope to see you in August!
Sunday Night Programming Change for Jr. and Sr. High This fall we will be rolling out a new schedule for our Jr. and Sr. High students. Our Youth Advisory Team, made up of Pastor Frank, Marilyn Hylton, parents and volunteers are working together to make this year a great year for both students and parents. Please look for more information regarding the fall schedule as we head into September. Pinnacle Vistas • August 2015
