OUR COMMON LIFE
What I did on my summer vacation Rev. Kelsy Brown I spent my summer vacation relaxing in the mornings, hiking in the Utah, Wyoming and Montana mountains, but one of the most eventful experiences was seeing a mama bear and her two cubs while hiking in the Teton National Park. While it is a unique experience to see a bear, it is also a scary one since the bear could do so much harm to us. Thankfully, the mama bear moved her cubs away from us, and we were able to get away safely. But the moment has stuck with me. Her eyes watched us as we moved on the trail. I wonder if this is the same as God’s eyes on us. He is watching us, even from a distance, keeping his eyes focused on where we are, where trouble and hardship are and being present for the celebrations. God’s eyes are on you.
Rev. Frank Harmon The Harmon’s summer was fun-filled and always moving. The highlights include a trip down to Yuma. I know most people might not consider Yuma to be a highlight of the summer, but we went there to watch our oldest, Trey, play in his under-8 all-star baseball game. Despite not winning, we had fun, and the kids enjoyed staying in hotels. Also this summer we took the chance to get out of the heat as we headed down to Tombstone to enjoy the sites and stories of that legendary town. Another highlight was my trip back to Haiti. I was lucky to be a part of Harmony Ministries dedication of their new sanctuary. I stayed a few extra days to visit friends of ours who Becca and I worked with when we were missionaries there. It was a great chance to reconnect with the people in Codep and see the changes that have occurred. All in all, it was a great summer and a great time to spend with family. MISSION AT PINNACLE
Haiti Ministries and Connections At Pinnacle Since 2008 Pinnacle Presbyterian Church has worked with other U.S. churches to support Pastor Luc Deratus and Harmony Ministries, which has churches, schools and medical support in some of the poorest areas of Haiti. Recently we have seen the opening of a church and school in the remote village of LaSalle, and the completion of the rebuilt church in Port-au-Prince replacing the one destroyed in the 2010 earthquake. These accomplishments are wonderful affirmations of God’s work. Along the way we have met many people and organizations doing wonderful work in Haiti, and we have several Haiti connections right here at Pinnacle. Wayne Stingley’s grandmother came from Haiti; Wayne and Dorothy were able to return to Haiti for the Harmony Ministries church dedication in June. The Cadet family came here from Haiti after the earthquake in 2010 to get needed medical services for a child. Steve Loken, a Pinnacle elder, formed a company called Haiti Infrastructure Development and has been working with University of Illinois engineering students on various projects in Haiti to address issues such as reforestation and clean water. Pinnacle members Nancy and James Lipscomb have worked for over a decade on the legal formation and opening of an orphanage and school called Center of Hope (Haiti) in Hinche. Several Pinnacle members have befriended the owner of Village d’Esperance orphanage in Port-au-Prince and provided assistance to her. And Jeanludger Amazan, a Pinnacle regular attendee, comes from Haiti and hopes to join us on an upcoming trip. In future Vistas we will highlight some of these people and their work so we can learn more about them and the good things happening in Haiti. Pinnacle Vistas • September 2015

ADULT FORMATION
Faith Formations: Adult Study Rev. Kelsy Brown Wednesdays, beginning September 23 - November 18 I 6 pm Fellowship Hall, Room 2 Jesus often preached about the Kingdom of God, but what did He mean by that? Did Jesus’ describe a kingdom about peace or violence, hate or love, health or wealth, law and order. Or was Jesus describing a different kind of kingdom, one not found in an oval office or a palace but a kingdom found at school, home, work and church. Join us each Wednesday to uncover what Jesus’ parables about kingdom mean for us today and grow together as God’s people. CONTACT: kbrown@pinnaclepres.org

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES AT PINNACLE
Club 45 Honors Tradition with 45 Feet of Ice Cream! Sunday, September 13 | 3:00 pm | Fellowship Hall Club 45 is our 4th and 5th grade fellowship club. These students and their friends are invited to our Sunday afternoon events and activities. We generally meet on the second Sunday of the month from 3 - 5:00 pm. Our events include onand-off-campus adventures where we have fun while also making sure to learn new ways to glorify God. Our Kick Off is Sunday, September 13. We will plan our activities for the year, play games, and, of course, enjoy a 45-foot-long sundae. Bring your favorite sundae ingredients to share as we look to set a new worldrecord for ice cream eating!
September Church School Takes “Initiative” The month of September brings us studies in initiative, but from a deeper, more spiritual perspective than one would normally consider. We will teach children to look at the world around them through new lenses and talk about how to respond to what they see. To reinforce the concept of initiative, we will travel back into the Old Testament book of Nehemiah and learn some amazing key points. September 6: When you see something big to be done, ask God for help. September 13: When you see what needs to be done, don’t wait for someone else to do it. September 20: When you see people in need, don’t wait for someone else to help them. September 27: Kids Can Projects will reinforce the concepts that we all need to take initiative and we should ask God to help us. 14

CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES AT PINNACLE
Kids CAN Do Mission Work For a dozen Pinnacle students, the first week of August meant more than the normal backto-school routine. In fact, these days in early August represented a new routine for these individuals…a routine in prayer and putting faith into action. During the first-ever children’s mission camp, students spent three days becoming God’s hands and feet. Each day included Bible studies as well as various prayer stations and activities to reinforce our walk with God. Then, to put our faith into action, the students ministered to individuals in our community: spending an entire day with the children of a homeless shelter, providing a Vacation Bible School experience, and singing and playing with the residents of a neighborhood senior center. The mission opportunities had a great impact on those we served. However, it was truly the students who learned what it means to be “blessed to be a blessing.” Without a doubt, everyone’s lives changed through God’s presence through the gifts of time in prayer, time in scripture and time in service.
