The Panhandle region of Texas was the last area of the state settled before the turn of the 19th century, and Mobeetie was the first established town in the Texas Panhandle. Originally a buffalo hunter’s camp, Mobeetie became a trading post protected by nearby Fort Elliott. Truly

an old west town, Mobeetie offered merchandise stores, blacksmith, livery stables, a total of 9 saloons, and was known for buffalo hunters, solders and gamblers. Noted figures that visited the town included Bat Masterson, Pat Garrett and Texas Ranger and ranching pioneer, Charles Goodnight. Temple Houston, youngest son of Sam Houston, resided in Mobeetie serving as the first district attorney in the area. TOPOGRAPHY/LANDSCAPE The landscape of the ranch consists of rolling native grass and improved pasture. Portions of the property at one time were in farmground and have now been planted to permanent improved grasses. The tree-lined shelterbelt provides cover for wildlife and good cover and shade for livestock. Areas of the ranch have shin oak providing browse for deer and cover for quail. Soils on the ranch consist of mainly fine sand and loamy fine sand soils.

WATER The ranch is watered by 2 windmills, with steel tanks set with concrete pads and dirt tank overflows. IMPROVEMENTS Fences are rated in good condition. There are no structural improvements on the ranch. CONTINUED ON PG 7

HUNTING, WILDLIFE, AND RECREATION The Mobeetie 480 Ranch offers very good hunting opportunities with good cover for deer and quail.
