did you know? Amis Harvest Ritual The Amis are Taiwan’s largest aborigine tribe, living in the valleys and coastal plains of eastern Taiwan, majorly located at Hualien, Taitung, and Pingtung Counties. The Amis hold harvest rituals from the south to the north from July to August to celebrate the harvest of crops. Originally, the Harvest Rituals were held to celebrate the harvest of millet and to show respect to the ancestors. But now, the Amis have changed to grow rice. Therefore, when rice is ripe for reaping, it is time for the Amis to start the Harvest Rituals. In recent years, at the encouragement of the government, a Joint Harvest Ritual of the forty villages of the East Coast is annually held, with duration of one to seven days. Singing and dancing are observed in the celebrations.

did you know? Ghost Festival Just as the West has Halloween for ghosts and ghouls, so also does Taiwan have a holiday to fete the departed spirits of the underworld : Ghost Festival, a popular occasion celebrated throughout China on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. In Taiwan, Ghost Festival is passed by slaughtering a pig and sheep, which together with a prodigious table of wine and meat is offered to one’s ancestors and ghosts from the underworld. Numerous Putu festivities are also held at this time around the island, crowned by the grand Keelung Ghost Day Ceremony. Today, Ghost Festival is more modest than in the past both in grandeur and scale as the government encourages more frugal forms of prayer in folk customs. This kind of economy is an apt realization of virtuous action that the Festival has always meant to foster.
