American Mint Sets Made Exclusively for Collectors The United States Mint has created annual sets of uncirculated coins for collectors known as Mint sets since 1947. Packaged just for collectors; these popular sets provide collectors with one example of each coin issued for circulation in a complete set issued by the U.S. Mint. Amidst a few interruptions and several changes in format, this popular collector offering continues into the present day. Some sets are of particular note to collectors since they contain coins not issued for circulation. This includes the 1970 Mint Set, which includes the 1970-D Kennedy Half, and later sets issued in 1973 and 1981 that include dollar coins not issued for circulation. The 1996 Mint Set included the 1996-W Roosevelt Dime struck at the West Point Mint – a coin found only in the sets for the 50th anniversary of the coin series. From 2005 to present, the United States Mint has used a special satin finish for coins included in the annual Mint Set. Along with particularly low mintage, this adds another unique aspect to the sets.

20th Anniversary Silver Eagles The 20th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Set was released by the United States Mint in 2006 to celebrate twenty years of the American Eagle Coin Program. The set includes three different collectible Eagles, and two of these coins represent brand new (at the time) finishes for the series. The W-Mint Uncirculated Eagle made its debut in this set, struck from a specially burnished blank and carrying a West Point ‘W’ mintmark. Joining the uncirculated coin is a standard 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle. This coin also includes the ‘W’ mintmark on the reverse.
But most importantly, the set also includes a unique 2006 P-Mint Reverse Proof coin. Barber or Liberty Head dimes were minted between 1892 and 1916 and are composed of .900 silver. They were designed by Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the Mint, who also designed the twentyfive- and fifty-cent pieces. His initial B is at the end of the neck of the image of Liberty on the obverse. The dime featured a wreath of American agricultural products with the words “ONE DIME” in the center.

Also known as the “Indian head” nickel, this coin is a copper nickel five cent piece struck by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938. It was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. During WWII, the U.S. Government melted many coins for their use in the war effort. This temporarily changed the way coins were minted and in 1943, the penny was made out of steel rather than copper. The entire field of the coin has a satin, uncirculated appearance.
