These two outstanding coins have enjoyed consistent acclaim since their joint introduction in 1916 when they earned a modest measure of fame for Adolph The reverse features a heraldic eagle and shield by John Mercanti
Alexander Weinman, the German-born sculptor who designed them. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design is so universally revered that its beauty was chosen to be showcased again on American Eagle Silver Bullion coins in 1986. The popular design shows a fulllength figure of Liberty striding toward the dawn of a new day, clad in the Stars and Stripes and carrying branches of laurel and oak – symbols of civil and military glory.

Established on March 12, 1912, by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia, today it is the world’s pre-eminent leadership organization dedicated solely to girls, building character and skills for success. The obverse will depict three girls who represent the different ages and diversity of the Girl Scouts of the USA. “A-TEN-HUT!” In recognition of famous United States Army 5-Star Generals, and to coincide with the celebration of the 132nd anniversary of the founding of the United States Army Command and General Staff College, the US Mint will release a series of commemorative coins. The $1 dollar, .999 Silver coin will become available in March of 2013 and feature Generals George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower against a striped background with the 5-star insignia above their heads. The reverse will feature the Leavenworth Lamp with the heraldic crest of Fort Leavenworth on its side. MARVELOUS AMERICAN MINT SETS The United States Mint has created annual sets of uncirculated coins for collectors known as Mint sets since 1947. Packaged just for collectors; these popular sets provide collectors with one example of each coin issued for circulation in a complete set issued by the U.S. Mint. Amidst a few interruptions and several changes in format, this popular collector offering continues into the present day. The first Mint sets issued from 1947 to 1958 included two examples of each coin struck for circulation packaged in cardboard and paper holders. This material caused the coins in the set to develop toning over time. In some cases, the toning exhibits rainbow hues that are prized by collectors. From 1959 to 1964, Mint sets were issued in flat packs similar to the packaging developed for the Proof Sets. The two cellophane packs were placed within an envelope marked with the date of issue. After three years of issuing Special Mint sets, regular Mint sets were issued from 1968 to 1981 and from 1983 to present. Some sets are of particular note to collectors since they contain coins not issued for circulation. This includes the 1970 Mint Set, which includes the 1970-D Kennedy Half, and later sets issued in 1973 and 1981 that include dollar coins not issued for circulation. The 1996 Mint Set included the 1996-W Roosevelt Dime struck at the West Point Mint – a coin found only in the sets for the 50th anniversary of the coin series. From 2005 to present, the United States Mint has used a special satin finish for coins included in the annual Mint Set. Along with particularly low mintage, this adds another unique aspect to the sets.

Sacagawea is the Shoshone Indian guide who appeared on the scene of history in 1804 to assist Lewis and Clark on their momentous expedition west. The Sacagawea Dollar was introduced in 2000 as the new circulating dollar coin of the United States of America. COLLECTOR STARTER SETS a. KENNEDY HALF DOLLARS The Kennedy half dollar, first minted in 1964, is fifty cent coin issued by the United States Mint. Intended as a memorial to the assassinated President John F. Kennedy, it was authorized by Congress just over a month after his death. b. STANDING LIBERTY QUARTERS These coins were struck by the U.S. Mint from 1916 to 1930 in .900 silver. The original design of the coin was the subject of some controversy. The design was modified in 1917 to cover Liberty’s exposed breast, and the reverse received a new arrangement of the stars, with the eagle moved higher. In 1925 the design was altered again when a depression was made in the pedestal on which Liberty stands and that bears the date.

c. BARBER DIMES Barber or Liberty Head dimes were minted between 1892 and 1916 and are composed of .900 silver. They were designed by Charles E. Following his death in 1945, the dime was chosen to honor Franklin D Roosevelt. The dime honored Roosevelt partly due to his efforts in the founding of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (later renamed the March of Dimes) and through 1964 the dimes were struck in .900 silver. b. BUFFALO NICKELS Also known as the “Indian head” nickel, this coin is a copper nickel five cent piece struck by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938. It was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser.
