LEGALLY SPEAKING

BY ALAN J. REINDFELD, ESQ

Minor wards and wills

U

nder both Florida Law and Federal Law, a grandparent has no legal rights to see their grandchild or grandchildren if they are being raised by their natural parent? If you do not get along with your child’s spouse or significant other, and your child passes away, that spouse or significant other can take the grandchild out of your life. Fortunately, there is a way to avoid this. The child of the parents can create a Last Will & Testament establishing a Grandparent as the Guardian of the monies for the child if they are unmarried. I have had several cases in the past couple of months, where a person passed away (“The decedent”), unmarried, but had a minor child. In these cases, the decedent, died intestate (without a Will), leaving assets for their beneficiaries at law, who happened to be children with age ranges anywhere from one years of age, to ten years of age. In most of these cases, the decedent happened to be in their late 20s or early 30s.

So what happens in the above situation? Under Florida Law, the child of a decedent is entitled to statutory preference to be a Personal Representative. However, these children are minors, and unable to legally exercise their right to serve as Personal Representative of the Estate. Therefore, under Florida Statute, the next group of persons able to exercise the right to serve as Personal Representative of the Estate would be the parents of the decedent. That would be the grandparents of the minor child. If the parents get along with the remaining parent of the child, that’s great. However, if they do not get along with the parents, that’s when the problems start.

If the grandparents had a simple Will for the decedent, which established some type of standby Trust, I wouldn’t be writing this article. However, when there is no Will, then if the assets of the Estate for the Minor Child which they are a beneficiary of is over $15,000.00, then a Guardianship will have to be established.. None of these procure any rights of the grandparents to visit their grandchild. Instead, the grandparent will have to hire an attorney just to fight for the right to be the Guardian of the property for the minor child, resulting in thousands of dollars in legal fees. However, all this can be avoided with a Simple Will, establishing the funds would be left to decedent’s children in a standby Trust, in the care of one of the grandparents or both. In that case, the grandparents would need to be able to check on the Minor Child’s status to be able to determine if he would need funds for schooling or other purposes.

FINANCIAL / TAX ADVICE RobeRt Spielman, Cpa, JD

Year End Planning 2017/2018

N

ovember and December are the months tax professionals urge their clients to project their current year tax picture, while at the same time considering what the next year might look like. These later months in the year are a time when most taxpayers have a pretty good idea what their full year tax picture will look like. At the same time, this gives us weeks to plan for the current year and consider how current year planning can af fect the next year. When we consider 2017 and 2018 together, we can implement strategies resulting in the overall best posture. While 2017 saw many Tax Cour t cases impacting specific circumstances, other than hurricane relief, there has been no significant tax legislation, that at present, af fects our year end planning. The current proposals in Congress will af fect all of us dif ferently, but at this time, we do not know what provisions will be enacted and whether they will be retroactive to the beginning of 2017. All of these uncer tainties put us in a dif ficult position to accurately plan for the end of this year and into 2018. Nonetheless, planning is still essential. As always, individuals should accumulate all their income and deduction data to date and project the totals through year end. Do a quick calculation as to what your taxes might be with your projected taxable income, then consider additional action steps that might improve your net result. Below are some planning ideas for the end of 2017. Additional strategies not mentioned, may be applicable in your circumstances. That is why it is essential to meet with your accountant in the next few weeks to explore strategies uniquely applicable to your circumstances. 1. Review your ability to shift income to family members in lower tax brackets. This can be accomplished in small businesses to reduce income of senior family members. 2. Make sure you have utilized the annual gift tax exemption of $14,000 per person. In 2018, $14,000 is increased to $15,000. If you do make gifts, making them early in the year creates an oppor tunity for the recipients to earn income, which eventually might be subject to a lower income tax. 3.Review all your business activities and Schedule C sole proprietorships. Accelerate deductions and postpone income where possible. 4.If you have capital gains income, consider taking losses on securities in your por tfolio. Be careful of the wash sale rules, which disallows losses for securities repurchased within thir ty (30) days. 5.Carefully review your itemized deductions and how they are impacted by phase outs. If you can bunch up your deductions in 2017 to gain a benefit, consider doing so. If you cannot do so, consider pushing of f deductions to 2018 when you might be able to exceed applicable phase out limitations. 6.Sometimes it makes sense to accelerate income into the current year to bring you up to a higher tax bracket than you might be in, but that will save taxes over the two year period. Accelerating income can be accomplished through security sales, postponement of deductions, taking additional IR A withdrawals, and of course through timing of payments for taxes, charity and other miscellaneous deductions. The objective here is to consider 2017 and 2018 together to determine what strategy results in the lowest combined tax liability.

10

December 2017

7.Consider fully funding your retirement accounts if you need additional deductions. If you do not need deductions or actually need income, consider additional retirement account withdrawals. Remember, if you reached age 70 ½ this year, you may delay your first withdrawal until next year, so long as it is made before April 1. If you are in this circumstance, it is impor tant to determine in which year taking your first required minimum distribution results in the best tax situation. 8.Consider “Rothifying” your IR A accounts, if you need to accelerate income into 2017. Many taxpayers end up with little or no taxable income in years before they are required to take minimum distributions. Oftentimes when those distributions are required, their income increases markedly. The objective here is to smooth out your income and take advantage of a lower tax liability by minimizing ef fective tax rates applicable to the withdrawals. 9. As always, make sure your Federal and State tax payments are suf ficient to avoid underpayment penalties. Notwithstanding, sometimes an underpayment penalty is acceptable if making the payment in a succeeding year generates a tax benefit that may not have been generated in an earlier year. You must run the numbers to see if this strategy works for you. 10.Review any credits that might be applicable. This includes business credits, education credits, energy credits, and state tax credits, among others. Year-end tax planning can be complex and is often based on assumptions and speculation. This is magnified by tax legislation uncer tainty. Notwithstanding, we need to do what we can based upon the facts as they presently exist. For most of us, tax rates might not be decreasing significantly in 2018, so the action steps addressed above most likely apply. If however, you and your advisor believe your 2018 tax bracket may be significantly less than the bracket in 2017, many of the strategies addressed above should be implemented in reverse. That means accelerating deductions from 2018 to 2017 where they will be more valuable, and postponing income into 2018 where the tax rate might be lower. While your tax return can be viewed as a historical document, your tax planning is for here and now. Plan your actions steps for the remainder of 2017 into 2018. As tax changes come into clearer view, you can alter your strategies to take advantage of any benefits that might accrue. But if you don’t plan, your tax savings oppor tunities will surely pass you by. My best advice, pull all your information together, plan now in November, plan again in December, and you will cer tainly have done the best you can. Best of luck this tax planning season and best wishes for a happy holiday season and wonder ful New Year.

Lighting the path to a bright future one candle at a time.

J

essica is a thirty-something charming young woman with developmental disabilities that keep her perpetually a little kid in heart and mind. As delightful and filled with love as Jessica is, the drawback is that she requires someone by her side almost all the time. However, she, like other individuals with special needs, has the desire and capability to excel at things she is involved in. The ScentsAbility story is about how her mom, Bonnie Schmidt, came up with the idea for a candle making company that could employ Jessica and other individuals like her. Several years later the company is still going strong; but instead of making candles in the house, they have a factory and a small store. ScentsAbility was approved as a nonprofit organization in 2013 and they have almost 20 young adults in their program. The company was recently awarded the Platinum Business Award from CareerSource Broward, given a local and state tribute and received a United States Congressional Proclamation that they have proudly framed in their store. ScentsAbility has also been featured on local broadcast station WPLG’s Heart of South Florida segment. Most recently Bonnie Schmidt and ScentsAbility received “The Designer of Reality” Award for creating a vehicle to positively transform lives and provide a path to a satisfying and happy future for those associated with the company.

16

December 2017

Here are some more thoughts from Bonnie: “With Jessica’s success, we realized the potential for ScentsAbility to help other families. We began with Jessica’s friends, and are now working on expanding our program to include other schools and organizations that assist those with developmental disabilities. ScentsAbility is not simply a business that sells candles - it is an opportunity to make a difference.” “We hope that someday ScentsAbility will be the vehicle that helps hundreds, even thousands of individuals with developmental disabilities become more active, independent, develop discipline, and productive - and be proud of what they can achieve. We are so proud of Jessica and the entire ScentsAbility Team and we are well on our way to fulfilling our mission to “light the path to independence…one candle at a time:” You can visit “Jessica’s Candle Shoppe” and ScentsAbility at http://ScentsAbility.org. Thank you Bonnie Schmidt for being such a positively wonderful “Designer of Reality”.

7 Tips for Managing Diabetes (Family Features) Staying healthy can be a challenge, especially for those living with diabetes. Everyone can have conflicts finding the right balance of partaking in healthy habits, such as exercise, eating well and even keeping your teeth and gums clean. From stress to selfcare, life can be up and down when you’re living with diabetes. These seven tips from Dr. Natalie Strand, the winner of season 17 of “The Amazing Race” who lives with diabetes herself, can help you stay healthy and lead a balanced life while managing your diabetes. Communicate with your care team. Make sure you connect with your nurse educator, endocrinologist and dietician. Reach out to them with your questions as they can often help you implement subtle changes to avoid completely overhauling your lifestyle and routine because of diabetes. Get involved. Get a local group together to fundraise, vent or just understand each other. Groups such as

20

December 2017

Diabetes Sisters, JDRF, TuDiabetes and BeyondType1 offer ways to connect with others living with diabetes in person or on social media. Connecting with the diabetes community can be a powerful way to help ease the burden of living with diabetes. Keep doing what you love. Just because you have diabetes doesn’t mean you have to give up doing what you love. Make efforts to continue sports, travel and other hobbies, even if there is a learning curve to adapting with diabetes at first. Maintain good oral health. People living with diabetes are two times more likely to develop gum disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Colgate Total toothpaste is FDA-approved to help reverse and prevent gingivitis, an early form of gum disease. Get into a routine. Find a routine that works and stick with it. This way you don’t have to make new decisions each day. Anything that can ease the mental burden of diabetes can help. For example, pick a time each

year for your annual visits: eye doctor, endocrinologist, renew prescriptions, etc. Picking the same time of year every year can help ensure you don’t forget to take care of yourself. Make self-care a priority. It can be hard to keep diabetes care in the forefront. It can be boring, exhausting and also fade into the background. Remind yourself that one of the best things you can do for yourself, and for your loved ones, is stay healthy. Use your family as motivation to exercise daily, eat better-for-you foods and maintain a healthy weight. Manage stress. Diabetes can be a big stressor. Add jobs, kids, relationships and it can become overwhelming. Find an easy and effective tool for stress relief and do it often. Even 5-10 minutes of guided meditation daily can have a big impact on stress management. For more information and ways to lead a balanced life with diabetes, visit OralHealthandDiabetes.com.

ven as 2017 begins, Rosemary Krieger of boca Raton is still in shock, she admits, from an event that took place in late 2016.

From left, Sarah Doyle, Woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon chair; Kirstin Stanley, Junior League of Boca Raton president; Lifetime Achievement Award winner Rosemary Krieger; Mindy Shikiar, vice president of Oncology and Ambulatory Services and Business Development at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Dr. Kathy Schilling, medical director at the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. (Photo by Dale King)

when a shaky, stunned and teary-eyed Rosemary reached the podium, she thanked the nearly 1,000 people in the audience at the 29thAnnual woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon & Fashion show at the boca Raton Resort & club. she had particularly kind words for her husband, ben, longtime partner in giving, and her three children who flew in from around the country: sons Kenneth, from New York and gregory, from Delaware, and daughter, catherine Krieger-Nelson, from Dallas. “I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.” many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few. Education and Arts Leadership

Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

the generous lady from boca has a simple philosophy about giving. “You don’t think about it, you just do it. I has to come from the heart.” coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. Top-ranked real estate pro Andrea ‘Andi’ Wites honored For 40 straight years in NAR By Dale King From the beginning of her career in real estate, Andrea “Andi “Wites has distinguished herself as a highly competent and knowledgeable professional.

Owning her own company, Andi said, gave her the flexibility to represent her clients and care for her children. Though the job of broker-associate is a timeconsuming one, when she with her own business, she had the flexibility to attend her children’s special events and still get the job done for her clients.

During last month’s meeting of the Realtors® Association of the Palm Beaches-Greater Fort Lauderdale Realtors®, Andi notched another notable accomplishment. She received the Realtor® Emeritus award handed out by the organization only to those who have served 40 consecutive years in the National Association of Realtors®.

A conscientious professional, Andi takes pride in providing responsive, courteous service, whether she’s assisting with a condominium sale, a single-family residence purchase or the listing of a luxury estate. With a high level of expertise and a strong work ethic, she believes no real estate need is too large or too small to deserve less than 100% of her dedication.

The crowd that packed the banquet hall of the Heron Bay Marriott applauded her achievement. And later, as Andi sat in the lobby outside the dining room with her fiancé, Paul Boliver, many who had attended the gala luncheon came by to say hello and offer her their congratulations. It was clear they respected her and her abilities. The award stated: “We are keenly aware that the long and faithful service for which you are being honored reflects myriad efforts and activities on behalf of the Association of Realtors®, of which you have been a member.”

Andi’s perseverance, enthusiasm and tireless efforts have earned her so many successfully closed transactions that she consistently ranks in the top 2% of Realtors® nationwide. She is also positioned in Coldwell Banker’s Florida Top 100 and is part of Coldwell Banker’s International Presidents Elite. Andrea “Andi” Wites is shown with the Realtor® Emeritus award handed out last month at the Realtors® Association of the Palm BeachesGreater Fort Lauderdale Realtors® gala luncheon. (Photo by Dale King)

It goes on: “We know the leadership effort that is exerted by Realtors® as they serve on committees, as officers and directors of associations, and in many civic activities that are connected with membership in an Association of Realtors®.” “We extend our hope and best wishes to you for many long, continuing years of service.”

Andi said she’s had the honor of working with many families, and helping first-time buyers learn the whys and wherefores of making the right real estate decision. Her fiancé notes that Andrea “is committed to her clients.

Andi agrees, saying she has no plan to retire. She certainly takes the association’s honor to heart. “The award is about longevity and success and constantly keeping up with new strategies.”

She will take a call from them at any time.” Another aspect of the real estate business that pleases Andi is the considerable amount of repeat business she gets. “I enjoy keeping in touch with my sphere of influence.”

Andrea Wites was a 27-year-old mother of two young children when she got into the real estate business. “I viewed it as an opportunity to earn a living while helping people.” The native New Yorker came to South Florida in 1974 and initially worked at the Berg Agency, a New Jerseybased company with an office in the North Broward area. “I opened my own office in Margate in 1981.”

Andi sold her own firm to Coldwell Banker in 1993. “I left it all behind to give my clients the benefits of the extensive resources offered only by Florida’s market leader.”

Using Coldwell Banker Florida’s innovative marketing programs, global connections and unmatched client services to draw upon, Andi knows of no other real estate professional more prepared than she to meet her client’s needs.

Technology has certainly changed since Andi walked into a real estate office for the first time. “There was no technology then, but the premise of how to sell property was still the same,” she said. A bound MLS book, now just a few mouse clicks away on the computer, was delivered by hand every couple of weeks. “If you were out and had to make a call, you either had go back to the office or your house to return your messages or find a phone booth.”

A resident of Coral Springs since 1978, Andi sells homes in the northern Broward and southern Palm Beach County areas, south to Fort Lauderdale, north to Boynton Beach and Wellington. The day she was interviewed, Andi was preparing for a Thanksgiving visit from her children and grandchildren. Her son is an attorney who lives in Lighthouse Point. Her daughter is involved in radio in California. Each has two sons.

REAL ESTATE LEGALLY SPEAKING BYLINE HERE BY ANDI WITES

What Are Buyers Looking For In A Resale Home? There is more bang for the buck in a resale home than new construction. With great new home communities of fering new designs with the newest building c odes, it is understandable that buyers are at tracted to the “newness” of new. However, the idea of more for the money, in a more established neighborhood, is the driving factor to the plethora of wonder ful resale homes in the Coral Springs/Parkland neighborhoods. There is literally something for almost ever y budget. From gated townhome communities to large estates on acreage, our cities have an abundance of great oppor tunities for home buyers moving in, moving up or sc aling down. What do buyers look for in a resale home? First, good condition. Even older c omponents that are well cared for, clean and undamaged, will allow purchasers to replace as needed or as their budget allows. Good c ondition and cleanliness demonstrates that other c omponents such as air c onditioning, plumbing and electrical systems have been well maintained too. Updates and upgrades provide purchasers with the abilit y to f inance improvements rather than needing thousands of dollars af ter down payment and closing cost requirements, which many families do not have at their disposal af ter purchasing. Saving for a new roof, new appliances, new a /c systems, can be a burden for many household budgets. Price is the key. A newer home will sell at a higher price per square

foot than older homes in the nex t subdivision. An older home with updates and upgrades will sell for more than the neighbor that has not yet invested in changes. A home that has been neglected and shows signs of disrepair, will appeal to those who c an af ford to buy at a low price to allow for investment but not wind up over market value when done. All conditions are salable. Price will drive the appropriate prospects to the house that best suits their budget plans. The cheapest improvements can result in quicker sales and higher prices, i.e., new grout, paint, carpet. More expensive improvements should be c onsidered when components are on their last leg, such as appliances, broken light f ix tures and fans for example. Do not redo or remodel your home for the purpose of selling. Clean, polish, put away clut ter, buy a few pret t y plants and show of f your proper t y like put ting on your Sunday best!

Reclaim Your Power and Leave Fear in the Dust Think back on your life, is there a time when you wished you had pushed yourself more and faced your fears, but the fear won the battle in the end?

It’s time, my 10 year-old and I sitting on the end of the speed boat about to get lifted up high into the sky on a tandem parasailing experience. Holy shit, what am I going to do? I look over at her and she looks back at me with those “mom, I’m so scared, are we going to die” look. Instantly in that moment I made a choice. A choice to be the director of my mind and put into practice the tools I teach. To create a fun, wonderful experience for the both of us.

Do you ever wonder how things might have turned out if you acted differently? Or if you acted at all? Whether it’s a fear of flying, being afraid to speak publicly or procrastination and perfectionism in your business… whatever is on the other side of your fear is an opportunity for growth, it is an opportunity for change, and it is an opportunity for you to reclaim your power. And yes, procrastination and perfectionism are fear in camouflage. We’ll dig more into that juicy topic another day. Right now, I want to tell you a story and give you a few tools that will serve you in the face of fear. It was spring break and my daughters and I decided to go parasailing. There they were, all excited, big smiles, totally pumped. Me…not so much, I was totally freaking out on the inside. Why you ask, the 2 things I fear – heights and the ocean, so parasailing…perfect! Oh and I notoriously get sea sick.

Tool #1: BREATHE. To interrupt my nervous system and calm my mind, I started breathing deeply, slowly and on purpose. I used my go to 4/7/8 method and it centered me to exactly where I needed to be. Tool #2: BECOME WHO YOU NEED TO BE THAT’S RELEVANT IN THAT MOMENT. This takes some imagination and a dab of focus. If you continue to stay fixated on who you’re not - ”I’m afraid of the ocean. I have a fear of heights,” then you will be imprisoned by that limitation. Instead, ask yourself, “Who do I need to be right now, so I can do this thing that I want to do?” Choose thoughts that empower you! So, in my case, what would a parasailing whizz do? What would they be thinking? Then run that story in your mind. “I love the

FRAME-IT

Brookside Plaza • 10637 Wiles Rd •Coral Springs

ocean. I’ve parasailed a hundred times. I love boats. Look how high we are!” It worked. It worked like a dream. Tool #3: FUTURE FOCUSED. Choose a visual and place your focus into the near future. When you do that, you are showing yourself that all be well. Because if you can see yourself in a future happening, then clearly, you’re safe. It’s soothing. For me, it was the image of all us having dinner together that evening at the resort. We were having a great time, smiling, laughing and it helped me know it was all going to be fine. And yes, by the time we were being pulled back down from our parasailing ride in the sky, I was singing -”I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky.” Thanks R. Kelly.

in the reser voir. As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles.

• Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air condi tioning, power steering and the cooling system.

• Check the gas cap to ensure it is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

With basic knowledge of common maintenance practices and a little time, motorists can inspect the following components in their own driveway:

• Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades. Keep the reservoir f illed with windshield washer f luid.

• Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. • Check all f luids, including engine oil, power

• To keep the cooling system working ef fectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. Never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level

• Don’t neglect the exterior. When washing the outside, make sure to include the tires and wheels and the underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. What is the right time to start orthodontics? It’s best for the orthodontist to see children by the age of 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment is required and to assess the best time for the patient to be treated. The first, permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that age and crossbites, crowding and other problems can be evaluated. When we begin treatment early, we can guide the growth of the jaw and direct incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches and gain space for permanent teeth. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment.

Invisalign® uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners to straighten your teeth. And, no one can tell you are wearing Invisalign because it’s invisible! Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable. This gives you the ability to eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are less of a hassle. The aligners are comfortable and have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment.

lingual braces are a reasonable option for models, actors/actresses, or professional musicians who play wind instruments, they cost significantly more and treatment time is considerably longer. What can be expected from orthodontics? For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. However, there are many benefits people do not know, such as improving eruption patterns, guiding permanent teeth into the proper positions, ensuring the proper width of dental arches by influencing proper jaw growth, reserving or gaining space for erupting permanent teeth, reducing the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, reducing the potential for jaw joint damage, and improving lip closure and speech. And, last but not least, after your braces come off, you’ll feel more self-confident. What everyone should know: Healthy teeth and proper jaw alignment are key components to your overall health. Teeth that are crooked or crowded in your mouth are challenging to clean and maintain, and can ultimately result in tooth decay, worsen gum disease and lead to tooth loss. Other orthodontic problems can contribute to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on the gum tissue and bone that supports the teeth or even misalignment of the jaw joints. These can lead to chronic headaches and face or neck pain. If left untreated, significant, additional dental treatment may be needed, which can very painful and costly. For many of our patients, a beautiful smile is the most welcome outcome of orthodontics, but the added health benefits are just as important. Dr. Danielle Battisti-Katz has been committed to providing patients with the highest standards of orthodontic treatment since 2002. With a state-of-the-art office and a team of professionals that maintain the highest level of accreditation, Battisti

Almost four years passed and the only thing that seemed to engage Owen were Disney films. Then one day his father donned one of his son’s puppets – Iago, the wisecracking parrot from Aladdin – and asked “ What’s it like to be you?” Suddenly Owen responded to his father using dialogue from the movie. Directed by Academy Award® -winner Roger Ross Williams (2009, Best Documentary – Shor t Subject, Music by Prudence), Life, Animated tells the remarkable story of how Owen found a pathway to language and a framework for making sense of the world through Disney animated films. Cimaglia appointed as Vice Mayor

LEGALLY&SPEAKI NG HEALTH WELLNESS BYLINE HERE BY DR. SIMON WONG

Acupressure Massage Therapy Acupressure or Shiatsu, a later developed Japanese form, has been used for more than 2000 years in China, acupressure applies the same principles as acupuncture to promote relaxation and wellness and to treat disease, and the fact that it is still in use today is a testimony to its effectiveness in the treatment of illness and pain.. Multiple factors contribute to the wellness producing pain relief, stress reduction, and general well being. It reduced muscle tension, improved circulation, and the stimulation of endorphins; similar to endorphins produced by morphine, it produce pain relief and a “positive” feeling in the body. Equally important, it also stimulate our parasympathetic system which had been be elaborated in my previous article- “Preventive medicine with Parasympathetic Stimulation”. Scientists have shown that many of these acupressure points are often situated on or nearby the body’s autonomic nerves, especially the parasympathetic nerves system; often named “rest and digest” regulator, it controls the motility of your gastrointestinal tract, modulates our immune system and tones down our “fight or flight” sympathetic response to stress. Two of the most crucial meridian “clusters” are located at the neck and lower back, which might have something to do with the concentration of our parasympathetic nerves in these two areas. Chronic neck and back pain syndromes in most cases are simply physical manifestation of patients with heighten sympathetic tone i.e. being “stressed out” physically or emotionally. During an acupressure session, patient lies face down wearing loose-fitting clothing, such as that typically worn while exercising or doing yoga, draped by towel on a soft massage table while the acupressure practitioners use their fingers, elbows or even feet to apply varying degrees of pressure to meridian or acupressure spots on the body, focusing on the neck, shoulder and the muscle/tendon area next to the spinal process from the cervical spine (neck) all the way down to the sacrum (buttock). A complete session typically lasts about 1 to 1 ½ hour and usually need several sessions for a significant results. During the treatment, patients would experience tenderness on the applied area which should subside immediately after the treatment. Since the therapeutic effectiveness is directly proportional to the strength of pressure applied to the area, the more you can tolerate the treatment, the sooner it would be to reach the therapeutic goal.

There are mounting clinical evidence that acupressure and acupuncture is able to treat and prevent certain diseases. For example, some studies suggest that acupressure releases endorphins and promotes anti-inflammatory effects, helping with arthritis. Multiple preliminary studies also suggests that fatigue and mood are being improve from the use of acupressure therapy for those inflicted by depression and anxiety. In China, the acupressure and acupuncture therapies are used as adjunct therapies to stroke patient in their rehab centers, often resulting in dramatic improvement in their speech and mobility. Many therapies work well with acupressure – in various forms it can be used as an effective adjunct to other kinds of manipulative therapy. Massage therapists often incorporate acupressure into their massage routines. By relaxing and toning muscles prior to adjustments, acupressure can also make manipulation easier and more effective for osteopathic or chiropractic treatments, allowing longer time between return visits. Contraindication to use used acupressure therapy would be working in the area of a cancerous tumor or if the cancer has spread to bones, those who have acute exacerbation of rheumatoid arthritis, recent spinal injury, or later term in pregnancy as it might induce contractions. 5 Benefits of Personalized Dog Food (Family Features) For dog owners, your pet is often your world and there are few things more special than the bond you share. From playtime to mealtime, you never settle for “good enough,” and your dog’s health is no different. When it comes to nutrition, every dog has specific needs and you know them best. Each dog is unique and his or her food should be as well. When deciding which dog food works best for your pet, keep personalized foods like Just Right by Purina in mind, which can help address your dog’s unique needs. It combines your firsthand knowledge with nutritional expertise to create the best dog food blend for your dog. By answering just a few questions about your pet’s breed size, eating habits and more, you can create a personalized blend of food that includes your dog’s name, photo and feeding recommendation that gets shipped directly to your door. “Every pet is an individual and that includes how we feed them,” said veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker, a 17-year veteran of “Good Morning America” and founder of Fear Free. “A highly personalized diet tuned to their specific needs and combined with plenty of exercise and regular veterinary care can dramatically impact their nutrition, health and wellbeing.” Feeding your dog personalized food could help yield these five benefits: Healthy skin and coat By providing important details about your dog’s skin and its needs, certain ingredients can be included in order to avoid dry and itchy skin. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, along with vitamin A and linoleic acid, can help keep your pup’s skin refreshed and can give your dog’s coat the nourishment it needs to be shiny and healthy. Ideal body condition Being the right weight can contribute to a lot of different health factors, but having an ideal body condition can be about more than just the amount of food you feed your pet. The right amount of fats and proteins can help keep your dog right where he or she needs to be. Choosing a formula with chicken, www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

salmon or lamb as the first ingredient can help your dog’s body feel strong and healthy with their high amounts of protein. Just as important, each dog has different metabolisms and different caloric needs, so personalized feeding instructions like those offered by Just Right by Purina can help your dog reach his or her ideal body condition.

Joint health and mobility Many dogs are often on the move – walking, running and playing. Having healthy bones and joints can support your dog’s overall health, especially in developing puppies, large breeds and senior dogs. Choosing a formula with proper amounts of calcium and phosphorus can help support joints and bones. Brain development Puppies need all the help they can get when it comes to growing and supporting life-long health. Giving them foods that include nutrients like DHA that support brain and vision development can inspire your puppy’s curiosity about the world. Active lifestyle

3 Ways Pups Can Improve Seniors’ Health (Family Features) Furry friends can play a significant role in pet owners’ lives. The old saying goes, “dogs are man’s best friend,” and research shows they may be more than that. In fact, they just might be the key to keeping seniors active.

According to a study conducted by the University of Lincoln and Glasgow Caledonian University in collaboration with Mars Petcare Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, dog owners 65 and older were found to walk over 20 minutes more a day than seniors who did not have canine companions at home.

The study documented three key conclusions: 1. Dog owners walked further and for longer than non-dog owners. 2. Dog owners were more likely to reach recommended activity levels. 3. Dog owners had fewer periods of sitting down. “Older adult dog owners are more active than those without dogs and are also more likely to meet government recommendations for daily physical activity,” said Nancy Gee, human animal interaction researcher at Waltham. “We are learning more every day about the important roles pets play in our lives, so it’s no surprise that pets are now in more than 84 million households. It’s great to recognize how pets can help improve seniors’ lives.” Walking with your pup can help both the pet and owner get in shape. Pets can keep older adults active and even help them meet the recommended public health guidelines for weekly physical activity. According to the study, on average, dog owners more often participated in 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity and achieved 2,760 additional steps. However, the benefits of pet ownership go beyond physical activity. It’s no secret that pets provide companionship. From reducing rates of stress, depression and feelings of social isolation, pets can play a significant role in improving people’s lives, which ultimately can make pet owners happier and healthier. Not only do pets serve as companions in their own right, studies have shown that dog owners can get to know their neighbors through their pets. Pets can even help facilitate the initial meeting and conversation, which may come as no surprise for many dog owners who have chatted with others while walking their dogs. For older adults who live alone or in a group facility, having a pet is also a great way to build relationships with others. As senior citizens are celebrated on upcoming days that acknowledge older adults, it turns out living with a pet can be a healthy choice for seniors in more ways than one.

Add Family Fun to Chores (Family Features) When school is in session and just getting out the door is an accomplishment, having go-to routines can help make ordinary activities more exciting for the entire family. However, if you encounter resistance to everyday household tasks, you may just need a simple revamp to make activities more entertaining and engaging. Refresh your family routines with these ideas designed to create more willing participants: Trash duty No one likes taking out the trash, but with a nudge, even little helpers can find fun in this mundane chore. Ask for help sorting materials in the recycle bin for an educational chance to throw things without getting into trouble. Or try timing how long it takes to gather trash from the bedrooms or bathrooms, and set a goal to break that record next week. Personal care Getting kids to brush not once but twice a day can be an onerous endeavor, but making the activity silly may be just the answer. The “Silly Brushing Song” is a fun,

52

interactive music video and tool for parents that Tom’s of Maine created in partnership with children’s singer and songwriter Laurie Berkner to help get kids brushing for a full two minutes, twice a day, as recommended by the American Dental Association. For a winning combination, add Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry toothpaste, the No. 1 natural children’s toothpaste according to SPINS, a provider of retail consumer insights for natural, organic and specialty products. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the toothpaste is made for kids ages 2-6 with natural ingredients including real strawberry extract and no artificial flavors, dyes or sweeteners. Learn more at tomsofmaine.com. Yard work Tools made for pint-sized helpers can make all the difference in getting junior gardeners on board. So can setting small, attainable goals so they can celebrate a sense of accomplishment. Try designating a flower bed to get rid of leaves or a section of the yard that needs sticks removed. Be sure to demonstrate proper techniques and give frequent praise for a job well done.

Clean-up time It’s no secret that kids can destroy a room in minutes, especially when it’s a room filled with their favorite toys. When it comes to cleaning up, all that mess can be overwhelming. Look for ways to make the chore more manageable, such as picking up all the cars and trucks first then the building blocks next, for example. Sing songs while you work to help make the time go faster. Pet care For many households, pets are not only beloved members of the family, they’re living, breathing lessons in responsibility. Once the novelty of a new animal wears off, however, so can the excitement of feeding and walking. A simple sticker chart can be a hands-on and effective way to remind kids that this is a chore that needs to be completed every single day. Plus, pet care can be a fun way to introduce children to the importance of responsibilities and becoming a “big kid.” For added fun, make your own stickers using funny photos of your family pets.

Tips to Get Involved at Your Child’s School (Family Features) For some parents, back-to-school season can be bittersweet as they watch their kids grow more independent each year. Taking on an active role at your child’s school is a simple way to provide support and stay engaged. Whether your schedule is relatively open or you’re juggling multiple demands, there are ways for virtually all families to participate in their children’s classrooms. Volunteer in the classroom. Today’s teachers are busier than ever, developing classroom lessons, teaching to rigorous curriculum standards, coaching and chairing extracurricular activities and tackling their own professional development goals. This can leave little down time to coordinate special activities or classroom celebrations, but that’s where parent volunteers can play an essential role. Develop relationships with teachers. Creating a connection with your child’s teacher can be based on more than checking in on performance and behavior. Sharing resources and ideas with teachers makes you an ally and an asset to the classroom. One example is the Tom’s of Maine “Green Your School Fund,” which will give $1 million to classrooms nationwide this year so students can roll up their sleeves and tackle hands-on environmental projects to understand the impact they can have on the planet today and tomorrow. Learn more about the program and how you can help your child’s teacher submit a creative environmental classroom project at GreenSchoolFund.com.

Join a formal organization. School organizations like the Parent Teacher Association are designed specifically to engage parents in the education system. Members have a direct connection to news about what’s happening in the school, an avenue to share concerns and means for inspiring change and bringing about school improvements. Take part in field trips. Many rich learning opportunities exist outside the classroom, but those activities are often limited by chaperone availability. Both schools and most field trip destinations require certain student-to-chaperone ratios for safety and optimal learning. Joining a classroom field trip not only allows you to share the experience side-by-side with your own child, but makes the outing possible for other children as well. Share your talents. There are ways parents can get involved without straying too far from what they know best. Volunteering to speak at a career day in your child’s class is a simple way to share real-world experiences and help prepare the next generation of leaders. Of course, if you’re looking for something a little more hands-on, many schools welcome community support to help build props or sew costumes for the school play, host a lesson on a favorite artist, share cultural traditions or help run activities like science fairs or field days. If you’re unsure how to get started, contact your student’s teacher or the school’s main office and ask for guidance on where you can make the biggest impact.

Varicose Veins? Might be More than Meets the Eye

BY MINDI RUDAN We’ve all seen them; on the beach, bulging behind summer shorts or marring the look of an otherwise great “gam” or worse---on our own legs in the mirror: Varicose or spider veins. Defined basically as veins that have become enlarged and twisted, the “bulge,” appears when valves or the pair of “leaflet valves” no longer meet properly, and simply put, the valves just don’t work anymore. (Valvular incompetence.) This causes blood being pumped from your heart-- that we often take for granted, hard-working veins carry to and fro-- to back up, if you will, creating the unsightly bulge we know as varicose veins. Most common in the superficial veins in the legs, which are subjected to high pressure from standing, too much sitting, inactivity or the dastardly leg crossing, these veins can actually be found anywhere on the body, even the face. While most people seek remedy for the cosmetic aesthetics, there’s much more reason to check them out—especially as we age. And while there are countless vein clinics, or even medical “spas” that offer to treat the malady, few bear the pedigree of board certified, world-renown cardiologist Ariel Soffer, founder of Soffer Health Institute, now with SIX locations. His professional credits could fill a page alone, but his personal passion for this field and his journey towards it--is much deeper. This IS the doctor who for FOUR years had an ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion.”The same doctor medical companies still call to test and give input on new methodology, new tools, techniques and breakthroughs. This IS the doctor who gives a seminar in New Orleans every year for 3-500 other highly skilled physicians who travel from all over the country to learn from him. HIS techniques, his innate diagnostic ability and gain his insight into this specialty. He’s that talented, and that committed. And lucky for us, his SoFla locations are graced by him –and a hand-picked and trained staff every day. His website heralds almost rock star adoration from legions of patients, some whose lives have potentially been saved, and countless others he’s made more livable and enjoyable because of his “vein whisperer-ish” knowledge, talent and years of focused experience. “He’s clearly the top of this pyramid,” offered Adam Kustin, company spokesperson and someone who’s

clearly enamored of Dr. Soffer’s skill and humility after seeing what he does every day. “In this field, he is as good as it gets, yet the man is so kind, so warm and so approachable, it has spawned the growth of this practice.” And call me crazy, but when you are talking about your vascular health, your overall well-being and your potential to enjoy living life, going to a “medical spa” to be treated for veins that work in tandem with your heart daily—SHOULDN’T be a crap-shoot. “You want the best,” said Kustin. “Two people can walk in with the same bulging vein issue, but there’s no way to tell if either has any real underlying health issues. It’s more than just cosmetic.” And Dr. Soffer’s ability makes sure patients don’t walk out just cosmetically beautiful, but walk out KNOWING there isn’t a serious hidden health issue that could be life threatening just down the road. “Sometimes people aren’t bothered by the bulging vein but they experience achy, very tired legs, numbness or restless legs and they never associate these “symptoms” with varicose veins. That’s why seeing a doctor as qualified as Dr. Soffer and his staff becomes so vital.” And fixing the issue is relatively simple. “And pain-free,” he added. “Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. The new lasers are very low risk, super accurate and extremely effective. We can also inject saline. It depends on the severity.” When asked why this doctor has made vein health his focus when he clearly is still regarded as one of America’s

top cardiologists, the answer brought staggering clarity and a character trait we all want in our doctors. “It was emotional for Dr. Soffer. He wanted to stop fixing the sometimes near unfixable issues in cardiology. Instead he wants to help people prevent these lifethreatening issues BEFORE they take a toll. Before they compromise how a patient lives life …and he gets an immediate hug,” half-joked Kustin. “He SEES people pain free, enjoying life again who didn’t even know it was possible for them. They never connected the dots, he does.” With six offices locally, Deerfield Beach, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Aventura, North Miami Beach, Hialeah/Miami Lakes, Dr. Soffer is accessible. His staff is multi-lingual, welcoming and most importantly willing to help people start the process. FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE CALL

954.246.4555 Soffer Health Institute began in Aventura and now there are several locations, including one in Deerfield Beach at 1877 W. Hillsboro Blvd. They plan to open a Weston location next. Members of the staff speaks Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese.

Stay Lean with Protein (Family Features) Shedding excess pounds doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself of your favorite foods, including red meat. A study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center shows that healthy, higher-protein diets including lean beef can be beneficial to not only weight loss, but also maintaining muscle mass and heart health.

• Dine out smart. Many people struggle with getting a balanced, protein-filled meal when dining out or grabbing food on-the-go. Look for words like “grilled,” “broiled” or “baked” when browsing the menu for lean proteins. Or add a lean protein to your entree salad, whether it’s for lunch or dinner. For snack time, consider beef jerky to get protein on-the-go.

The study is in line with ongoing research on the importance of lean protein for weight loss. To kick your healthy eating plan into high gear, try these tips:

• Enjoy protein at every meal. One of the benefits of having protein in your meal is feeling more satisfied, which helps reduce mindless eating or snacking in between meals. Additionally, meals with high-quality protein help build muscle and reduce body fat. • Choose lean protein options. Picking lean protein options can be easier than you think. You can still enjoy a beef burger and save calories by choosing lean or extra-lean ground beef. Other smart meat case picks include top sirloin steak or sirloin tip, bottom round steak or roast, eye of round steak or roast, or top round steak or roast. Also make sure to choose colorful vegetables and fruits to round out your meal, like in this recipe for Grilled Southwestern Steak and Colorful Vegetables.

On behalf of the City of Coral Springs, I wish you all a happy holiday season! We’ll be kicking off the holiday festivities on Saturday, December 2, bring your entire family to Downtown in December at the ArtWalk! The fun begins at 5 p.m. and will include holiday treats, free cookies and milk and other fun winter surprises. There will be live entertainment by The MistleTones and DJ Jam Dance Party. The event is free but there will be food and refreshments available for purchase. For more details, please call 954-344-1111.The ArtWalk is located at 9405 NW 31st Ct., just west of University Drive. There will be free parking in the Downtown area.

Mayor Hunschofsky I hope everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving and was able to spend some quality time with family and friends. So often it is easy to get caught up preparing for the holidays that we may forget to slow down and remember what the holidays are really all about. Personally, this is my favorite time of the year. The weather is cooler. There are several holiday parties where we can catch up with friends and my family’s schedule lightens up so that we can spend more time together. We have lots of events and activities happening in December in Parkland. The Farmer’s Market continues with a craft fair as well on December 3 and 17 from 9am-1pm at the Equestrian Center. Our popular outdoor concert series, Eats ‘n’ Beats, is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, from 5:30-9:30pm at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park. December 21 is the annual Parkland Snowfest for our residents. Kids love this event complete with snow—including dual snow slides so kids can race their friends. There is a special area for toddlers and everyone can enjoy crafts, music, and more. Registration for this event opens to Parkland residents on December 1 and, as one of the most popular events of the year, it fills quickly so register early. You can register on WebTrac at https://rec.cityofparkland.org/wbwsc/webtrac.wsc/ splash.html or in person at the PREC. Our next city commission meeting is on Wednesday, December 6, at 7pm. You can view the meeting agendas at www.cityofparkland,org/cc. Additionally, I will be holding office hours on Tuesday, December 5, from 8am-10am at Parkland City Hall. There is no appointment necessary. If you are unable to make it to my office hours, please feel free to contact me via email at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org with any questions or concerns you may have. As 2017 comes to a close, I would like to extend my best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful holiday season and great start to 2018! Thank you for being part of our community. You can keep up with all the events happening in Parkland by following us on Facebook at facebook.com/copfl and subscribing to our e-blast “Parkland on Tap” at cityofparkland.org/notifyme. That will ensure you never miss an event. I love hearing from residents, so please share your thoughts and comments with me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org.

Make sure to visit the Farmers’ Market at the ArtWalk as well. This month, it’ll be on Sunday, December 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Market will run thru April. I encourage you to take a stroll and view the wonderful public art on display and enjoy the many vendors! FAMILY FEATURES

rom your own hometown to the far reaches of the globe, there are thousands of destinations just waiting to be discovered by adventurous souls. Satisfying your itch to get out and explore may take you across town or across the ocean, but adhering to some common principles can make your travels extra rewarding. n Step outside your comfort zone and try new things, be it zip lining or sampling an unfamiliar food. n Follow your instincts, though, and keep safety first and foremost. Be wary of places that generally make you question your well-being, and never travel alone. n Capture the memories, whether in a journal or in pictures, so you can reflect and reminisce when you return back home. Gearing up properly is essential no matter where your travels take you. Make sure you’re well-prepared for your next epic journey with these must-haves for adventurous travelers and find more travel-friendly advice at eLivingToday.com.

Explore new lands

Taking to the trails may mean you’re traveling by foot, but bicycling is another exciting way to explore. However, an average street bike isn’t appropriate for most trails. A mountain bike outfitted with rugged tires designed for optimal traction and superior suspension is a much safer option. If you’ll be primarily on trails or doing downhill treks, a bike specifically geared for those conditions is best. Fat bikes are a good alternative for riders who want more year-round versatility.

If you’ll be sleeping outdoors, a tent is a must to protect yourself from inclement weather and the less hospitable of Mother Nature’s creatures. The sizes, styles and options are plentiful, but features like rainproof material and ample ventilation are top picks for most adventurers. Other important considerations: seasonality, sleeping capacity and ease of assembly. Also keep transport in mind, and be sure your tent is no larger (or heavier) than what you can comfortably carry to your destination.

The excitement doesn’t need to stop even if you need a break from the action. Escape into the thrilling world of bestselling author James Rollins’ “The Seventh Plague.” An archaeologist, missing for years, stumbles out of the Egyptian desert. He dies before he can explain, but his autopsy reveals his body began mummifying while he still lived. In an adventure stretching from a lost desert tomb to an Arctic engineering complex Sigma Force must confront an ancient biological threat made real by modern science. Find more at harpercollins.com.

Protect your feet

Proper footwear is vital for an active traveler, and hiking boots are among the leading choices for an adventurer. Proper fit and size are critical, as this affects whether your boot is providing adequate support without friction that can result in painful blisters. A good rule of thumb is to shop near the end of the day when your feet are most likely to be swollen and wear socks comparable to what you’ll wear on the trail. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Pack it up

Wherever your adventures take you, having someplace to store your essentials is a must. Backpacks are a practical solution because once slung over your shoulders, your hands are free to aid your exploration. The distribution of weight also makes for a more comfortable journey. Particularly if you’ll be loading up your pack, you’ll want to shop for quality over cost and find a bag with strong, reinforced seams, sturdy straps and durable zippers or clasps..

TwinS Saved by FaST-acTing ciTizen A quick-thinking citizen and knowledge of CPR was the difference between life and death when twin 19-month boys were pulled from a Coral Springs pool. It was last December near the holidays when Jose Rodriquez was completing electrical work at a home in our city. He heard screams for help over Christmas music at a nearby home and ran into the backyard to find a grandmother pulling the second of her twin grandsons from the pool. Jose jumped into the pool, pulled out an unresponsive child and began CPR. The child, who had no pulse, eventually opened his eyes, threw up water and began crying. While tending to one child, Jose instructed his co-worker who had arrived, how to perform CPR on the other twin who was struggling to breath. He too, threw up water and began crying. Both children were transported to the hospital and made a full recovery. It was selflessness which led Jose to learn CPR. He explained to the Coral Springs Police Command Staff, “My wife and I have fostered over 30 children, we were required to take CPR and infant CPR, and although I had not performed it in 12 years, it instantly came back and I knew what to do.” Jose brought his wife and four beautiful daughters to the police department for his recognition and they looked on with such pride as Interim Chief Shawn Backer read the many reasons he was worthy of this award. The number one cause of accidental death for children under the age of five in South Florida is drowning. We encourage all residents to take CPR, teach children at a young age to swim and never leave children unattended near any body of water. In this instance, Jose Rodriquez was in the right place at the right time and sprang into action without hesitation. For his efforts, we were so honored to recognize him with the Citizen’s Recognition Award.

Over the summer, Coral Springs Police and Fire responded to a call about the possible drowning of an adult male. Upon arrival, they found a man and a teen providing first aid, which ultimately saved this man’s life. What happened leading up to the call was worthy of life saving recognition by Interim Chief Clyde Parry and Command Staff. Terry Daramola, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, was floating in the pool with a snorkel as part of the exercise he participates in to keep his muscles moving. During that time, he suffered distress and took in water, sinking to the bottom of the pool. Augusto “Gus” Cohn, just 16 years old at the time, saw him, dove in to the deep end and pulled him to the surface, where Eduardo Bernal helped pull him on to the pool deck and began performing CPR. At that time, Terry was unresponsive, but after a while he began to expel the water he ingested and began breathing. Terry was transported to the hospital for further treatment and recovered thanks to the quick actions of Gus and Eduardo. When they came to the Police Department to be recognized, Terry joined them to offer his appreciation as well. It was an emotional reunion as Interim Chief Parry spoke of their heroism saying, “the term hero gets used a lot, and in this case you two are the definition of true heroes, as there is nothing more precious than life, and you restored that for Terry.” An emotional Terry agreed and hugged both of them, thanking them once again for helping him survive. Gus, who is only a High School Junior at Pompano Beach High School, had his proud family join him for this honor. Eduardo spoke of Gus’s great character and how proud he was of his actions that day. In addition, Eduardo encouraged Terry to get back in the water, and offered to assist him face his fear of returning to the exercise that his assisted him with his disability.

God’s CoRNER

Prayer

PUZZLE ANSWERS

LEGALLY SPEAKING BYLINE HERE

BY DR. MIKE ROzENBLUM (GREEN CHIROPRACTIC) CALVARY CHAPEL FTL - MEN’S MINISTRY

So if God already knows everything, why do we even need to pray? God existed before there was anything else, has everything under His command, is all powerful and after creation says in the book of Genesis, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;”. God created us to have relationship with Him. Prayer is simply defined as talking to God. Although God knows everything, like any Father, He still likes to hear the request of his children. As a Christian, I believe that the Messiah has already come. His name is Jesus, and while He was with us, He gave us an example of how to pray. Here is a very modern translation of the Bible which highlights His example for prayer: “Our Father in Heaven, Reveal who You are. Set the world right; Do what’s best— as above, so below. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You’re in charge! You can do anything you want! You’re ablaze in beauty!” (The Message)

Here are 5 things to remember about PRAYER: 1. PROCESS. There really isn’t one. We can pray anywhere, anytime. He recommends praying without ceasing. It is always good to get your head and your heart right before praying. I also recommend to pray for others and not just ourselves.

7 3 6 8 1 4 5 9 4 8 7 2 5 3 5 2 1 6 3 9 8 3 1 7 5 6 2 9 6 5 9 4 8 1 2 2 8 4 9 7 3 6 1 9 5 2 4 8 7 MY PERsonAl 4 7 PRAYERs 2 3 includEs 9 64 bAsic 1 coMPonEnts: 8 6 3 1 5 7 4

2 6 4 8 7 1 3 5 9

9 1 7 4 3 5 6 8 2

2. POWER. Remember who you are praying to. God is all powerful. He created the whole thing. Which means He is the architect of everything. I rejoice in worshipping a God I don’t fully understand all the time. However, I know, based on evidence, that He has the power to do anything. 3. PRIVACY. We know that the Bible tells us that wherever 2 or 3 are gathered in His name, the Lord will be there. But I believe the most effective prayer is private. Whenever I want intimacy with someone, I want it to be just between me and them. 4. POSTURE. Immediately, you think of the “right” posture during prayer. Prayer comes from your heart, so don’t worry about the position of your body. Instead, be mindful of the posture and condition of your heart. 5.PERSONAL. Make prayer real and not repetitious. No one has conversation where they repeat the same things over and over. It should be no different with God. Talk to Him as a Father or as a friend who sticks closer than a brother. He loves you unconditionally.

Adoration - God you are Awesome and I love you

Confession - You and I both know the dumb things I do. Please forgive me

Thanksgiving - I realize I have way more than I deserve. Thanks!

Supplication - Here is what I am asking from you. Only do it if you agree that it is best for me

If you’ve never talked to God, try it today. May He richly bless you as you enjoy great conversation with Him. www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM
