LEISURE
Welcome to the 58th issue of Leisure Scene. Spring is in the air and hopefully in the step of our members, as getting outdoors and back into life gets easier as we edge towards summer. In this edition, we’ll take a look at the new advice surgery launched for all your nutritional questions and share tips on navigating the meat-free lifestyle choices that are growing in popularity. We celebrate the achievements of our hockey competitors across the nation and recognise the efforts of the everyday heroes among us with the newly assembled volunteer review panel. As ever, we acknowledge the charitable efforts of our fundraisers and share in the successes of the members who have qualified for our sponsorship scheme. We look back on the national event highlights from 2017, meet the newest members of the events team and talk to a stone mason whose work featured in the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year. Happy Reading

The East Kilbride Community Trust (EKCT) welcomed the Minister for Sport and Health, Aileen Campbell to their project at Calderglen Country Park to see first-hand the work that they do. Linda Fabiani, Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP) and Michelle Russell from CSSC were also there and were shown round the site by the Trust’s chairman and CSSC member, Robert Gillies to see what has been achieved with raised beds and two poly tunnels. Even in the snow following the recent Arctic blast, there was an acknowledgement of how much good work had been done. Linda Fabiana said “it’s fantastic to see how much this group has grown over the years. It’s always a pleasure visiting them and seeing the achievements and awards they have received is commendable.” A cheque for £1,000 from CSSC Sports & Leisure was presented to Robert Gillies. “This will go a long way to helping us to achieve more at the Glen,” he revealed. “We will be supplying seeds to civil servants who are interested in growing their own vegetables." Robert wishes to thank CSSC for the generous donation which will help the Trust keep on growing.

Spring/Summer 2018
For the Fallen Soldiers of WW1
After 52 years of teaching swimming, and nine years as an instructor for the Ministry of Defence (MoD), CSSC member Caroline Dear changed direction. She gained a Conservation Degree in Buildings and became a fully qualified Stone Mason in 2001. After studying many major buildings in London (Westminster Abbey, Albert Memorial, Natural History Museum), a year with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) as a stonemason lead Caroline to study famous cemeteries. “Viewing hundreds of gravestones from fallen troops, especially when seeing the ages on each one” deeply moved Caroline during her time spent studying at the war graves. Since starting her own stone carving business, Stonecraft in Southampton, Caroline has been exhibiting as a trade-stand at the Chelsea Flower Show since 2004, was presented to HM the Queen and HRH Prince Charles, as part of a Prince's Foundation Craft Scholarship and has been featured in various trade publications, and local websites and newspapers. In 2014, the main theme for Caroline’s stand at the Chelsea Flower Show was a Poppy Memorial for the Romsey Branch of the Royal British Legion. Due to her involvement with the MoD and CWGC, this piece was carved as a personal tribute to the fallen, and was donated to Romsey and unveiled November 2016. In March 2017 Caroline invited two Chelsea Pensioners to view the Poppy Memorial, where a special wreath was laid. “Over the years I have met many Chelsea Pensioners, some while I was living in Chelsea, others at the flower show” says Caroline, “and it’s because of this that my latest donation will be to the Royal Hospital Chelsea, of another Poppy Memorial.” Where the original 2014 poppy memorial commemorated the centenary of the start of WW1, the new memorial will commemorate the end of WW1. The piece, Caroline says “will be similar in design but with more poppies and will include more detail as I have longer to carve them.” A place has already been allocated outside the new Infirmary, and work is in progress with this installation in mind. Caroline will be exhibiting the piece at the Chelsea Flower Show 2018, and she is hoping that In-Pensioners will be encouraged to get involved in the surrounding planting scheme both at the show, and its final spot.

Recognising the Heroes Among Us
“We have heroes all around us” was the sentiment from volunteers on the Certificate of Recognition Review Panel. The review panel is a group of experienced CSSC volunteers who assemble to highlight and praise the efforts of volunteers who have gone the extra mile by being a strong advocate, organising a great activity, recruiting members or improving our services. The review panel know how important it is, and how special it feels to be recognised and rewarded for a particularly significant contribution. They feel it’s essential to praise those who put themselves out for the organisation and excel at promoting CSSC over a sustained period of time. The Certificate of Recognition is one of the many ways CSSC values its volunteers. The new panel will help decide when nominations meet the criteria, or if they’re worthy of another type of recognition within the organisation. Nominations generate wonderful stories of volunteering, which the panel will delight in sharing with members. Volunteer Carson says, “we don’t volunteer so we can
receive an award, but sometimes it is nice just to be thanked” and Rosanne is looking forward to her role on the panel because “to be in a position to acknowledge their efforts and reward volunteers is an absolute honour.” “There are countless individuals out there who deserve to be recognised for their hours of hard work” says Carol, “to be recognised puts the cherry on the cake for a role most of us thoroughly enjoy.” Jason A’Court from London was recently recognised for his volunteering efforts, “I feel privileged to be part of such a professional organisation. The support I have received from both the London Team and wider CSSC head office has led to implementing improvements and being involved in delivering change first hand, it has been so rewarding. I was surprised to receive the Certificate of Recognition at the volunteer celebration event. Having my efforts recognised was a reflection on how well CSSC appreciates contributions throughout the organisation. Thank you!”
Next time you see a volunteer going the extra mile, let us know so we can show them how much we all appreciate their time and effort on behalf of the CSSC community. Nomination forms can be found on the website, cssc.co.uk/CoR If you’d like to talk to someone about a nomination please contact Volunteer Support Advisor Michelle Chelu at michelle.chelu@cssc.co.uk

CARSON
ROSANNE
CAROL
I've been volunteering for CSSC for over 30 years as Tenpin Bowling Regional Organiser for Northern Ireland and took over the role of National Organiser in 1998. As well as tenpin bowling, I have also been involved in organising and competing in many different events. Volunteering for CSSC has given me the opportunity to meet lots of great people, forge many friendships, and be part of a team who supports the different events to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible. I love volunteering at the CSSC Games; for me it’s the jewel in the crown!
I’ve been a CSSC volunteer for about 20 years and still going strong. I became a member due to my love of sports which led to me becoming an office champion so I could tell my colleagues about the benefits that membership offers. I manage the CSSC Beamers Netball Club in London and the CSSC Netball League. I absolutely love being a volunteer because it has given me the opportunity to meet a diverse range of people across the Civil Service, many whom have become close friends. Being nominated as a finalist for Volunteer of the Year 2015 was an awesome feeling – it was an absolute pleasure to be nominated for doing something that I love.
I’ve been a member of CSSC for around 17 years and Secretary for the Anglia Area Association for 12. I’m a peopleperson, so my role as Secretary and Event Organiser in our area association suits me down to the ground. I love meeting new people and arranging trips for our members to enjoy. I give 100% effort to my role; it takes time and brings its own challenges but we carry on because we want to offer the best service possible to our members.

More Than Five a Day
With
VEGANUARY
starting the year, National Vegetarian Week in May and Meat-Free Mondays going all year round, plantbased eating seems to be gathering momentum. As High Street chains like Pizza Express and Wagamama provide vegan choices and Starbucks offers a variety of milk alternatives, there’s no denying that veggies are becoming a bigger part of the British menu these days. Perhaps you know someone who has recently changed their diet, or maybe a friend or family member has committed to plant-based eating, most of us have heard the term ‘vegan’. A vegan is someone who does not use or eat any animal products including meat, cheese, eggs, honey, gelatine-based foods, some wines and various processed foods. In 2018, over 120,000 people took part in Veganuary, which is a month-long pledge to try veganism. Almost three times as many people took part this year compared to 2017 and the trend seems to be growing. According to The Independent, there are over half a million vegans in the UK today. Vegan food consultant Nicola Neal believes that “the benefits of following a plant-based diet are many; not only does it work for animals, but it’s also good for environmental sustainability and individual health.” She admits though, that “it’s a huge lifestyle change. Some people may go straight to vegan and some may transition from vegetarian as I did, but whichever way the changes happen, getting support from friends and family is very important.” So, what are some of the things you should know? Animal products can be found in the most unusual places including Worcestershire sauce (anchovies), guacamole dip

(can contain cream) and some wines are filtered using an agent that can contain bone marrow. Vitamin B12 is only found naturally in foods from animal sources so plant-based eaters typically require vitamin B supplements or take care to include fortified foods like Marmite, breakfast cereals and soya. While omnivores get most of their protein from meat, protein can also be found in pulses like lentils and kidney beans and calcium is rich in sesame products, dried fruits, nuts and pulses. According to the British Medical Association vegans have lower rates of obesity, coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. They also generally have a lower BMI even when their calorie intake is the same as meat-eaters. While there is a society for both vegans and vegetarians, there’s also plenty of online resources and even smart phone apps to help guide beginners and friends/family through the minefield of what is and isn’t vegan, and which restaurants cater to plant-based diets. If you, a friend or family member decides to eat less meat or purely plant-based food for health, environmental or political reasons, the fact remains that vegetables are playing a bigger role in our lives. So, whether it’s potatoes or parsnips, okra or aubergine - it’s a step in the right direction.
To find vegan recipes there are many websites and online resources including Veganuary’s recipe directory: https://veganuary.com/recipes/ You can find lots of plant-based recipes on BBC Good Food www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/ collection/vegan and even Jamie Oliver has a special area dedicated to vegan recipes on his website www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/ category/special-diets/vegan/ The NHS has a Q&A for those curious about the benefits and consequences of vegetarian and vegan diets at www.nhs. uk/Livewell/Vegetarianhealth/Pages/ Vegetarianhealthqanda.aspx

Meet the Events Team CSSC's event team are responsible for organising all the incredible sporting and social events held throughout the year. While most of our readers have probably met or spoken with the core events team over the years, there’s a couple of new faces to get to know.
Rachel Pearce is one of the newest members to join the events team. Rachel has always been interested in sports, whether participating herself or supporting others and was drawn to CSSC, as it seemed like a perfect combination of sports and leisure and events. Rachel’s previous experience with corporate events taught her the importance of communication. Rachel enjoys seeing the various stages of events, from the first email received to the big event itself and feels that “being part of the build-up and seeing the event taking place and being a success” is what drives her. Her attention to detail and creativity within the events team will bring in new ideas to help CSSC's events team reach our goals. “I love seeing other people’s cultures and way of life, and hope to travel more. My partner and I have brought our first place together, which is very exciting. Our adventure has begun and I’m looking forward to what our future holds. “ rachel.pearce@cssc.co.uk • 01494 888 417
Chris Johnson is another new member of the events team. Chris was drawn to the organisation because of the rich history of CSSC, “there are not many sports organisations who have been going for almost 100 years, and what CSSC have planned over the next few years is something I would be honoured to be part of.” Chris studied event and festival management at university, gaining a BA honours. Chris hopes to contribute by making the team more efficient and help his colleagues grow within the organisation and in turn help CSSC succeed. Chris is a passionate music fan, who regularly attends gigs and festivals, “I write a music blog about the latest music news, reviewing the latest releases and anything that is music related.” An avid sports fan, Chris loves playing field hockey for Wycombe Hockey Club and being a proud supporter of Arsenal Football Club. chris.johnson@cssc.co.uk • 01494 888 407

Jennifer Yarrow has been in the events team for four years and enjoys the team atmosphere and morale at CSSC. She loves to hear about how members have enjoyed the events that she has arranged. Taster days started with 61 events, in mostly southern regions back in 2012. But since her time at CSSC, Jenny has grown taster days to a staggering 801 events! “Most of the original events are still thriving today like the sailing days in Hamble, flying and curling in Kent, and white water rafting in Hertfordshire. I introduced the flexible tasters in 2017 which has gone from strength to strength with over 470 different locations/activities available for members to book.” jennifer.yarrow@cssc.co.uk • 01494 888 434

Highlight Reel 2017 Each year CSSC hosts a range of national events across the country attracting all standards of players and providing competition for everyone. Here are some highlights from just a few of the major events of 2017.
Played in the spirit intended. Everyone mixed, mingled and there was lots of banter, a good day for cricket. Peter Crossley Curtis Bennett Secretary Curtis Bennett 11-a-side Cricket Competition
The Curtis Bennett 11-a-side cricket is a 40 over knock-out competition, where the highest scoring side wins and moves on. Covering England, Wales and Scotland, the competition takes in departments, regions, areas, large or small offices, miscellaneous and even individually run sides. As the Curtis Bennett celebrates its 96th year, nearing its very own century, a new format is to be introduced for 2018 where the competition will be played on a regional and league basis.
We look forward to it every year, the standards of play are always getting higher. We've managed to play as a squad, rather than a group of individuals and always play hard, have fun and take advantage of a couple of really enjoyable days.
Hancock & Evans 11-a-side Men’s Hockey Competition
The Hancock & Evans Men’s 11-a-side hockey originated in 1962-63. In the early days, the Hancock & Evans was run as a traditional cup competition taking place over the Adam Wells second half of the season. Nowadays, all the matches are DSRA Team Captain played over two days at the wonderful facility of Beeston Hockey Club. The MOD hockey squads are always keen to enter the Hancock & Evans cup which is a testament to the quality of the event, from the organisation to the actual competition.

SPONSORSHIP SCHEME
supported by
Achieve your goals with CSSC In each issue we like to share the stories of members who have reached their goals or achieved a dream with the help of CSSC's Sponsorship Scheme. Rachel Collins, Peter Wilson and Dan Harbidge had terrific success in 2017 with their respective achievements.
Para Dressage, Bishop Burton CPEDI 2* Para Dressage 2017
Thanks to the support of CSSC, 46-year-old Community Development Manager from Dover District Council Rachel Collins, fulfilled her childhood dream and represented Great Britain in para dressage.
“I have always loved horses but could not afford my own until I was 30.” Initially a leisure rider, Rachel finally purchased her horse Jolan four years ago and started competing in paradressage. Rachel is a Grade 4 para-rider (with Grade 1 being the most impaired and Grade 5 being the least impaired). Her horse Jolan is a 23 year old Danish dressage horse; a true team, they have worked their way up from the grassroots of 'Riding for the Disabled' competitions, to competing alongside paralympic champions on a national level. Rachel and Jolan have represented England three times in the para team and once in the able-bodied team. “I am extremely grateful to the Kent Sport FANS scheme which allows free access to sporting facilities for national sports people, as through this I have been a regular in my local sports centre gym for the last six months. The additional fitness, strength and conditioning has definitely helped me.” Rachel and Jolan finished 4th overall which exceeded Rachel’s expectations and has given her even more drive and ambition to progress this year.

Mountain Leader Training Course
Peter Wilson (31) from the Ministry of Defence, took part in a six-day mountain leader training course with the help of CSSC. Held at the National Mountain Sports Centre in Plas Y Brenin in Capel Curig North Wales, the course taught essential skills including navigation, pacing, timing, safety, route planning, river crossings and identifying suitable ground in mountainous areas of the UK. “Working as a team but leading individual legs, we navigated ourselves over the rough terrain of the Blenavon area of North Wales, all the while being taught the tactics and techniques needed to keep ourselves and the group safe in the mountains.”
European Triathlon Championships
Dan Harbidge from Warrington was awarded £500 from CSSC's Sponsorship Scheme for costs associated with his ambition to compete in the European Triathlon Championships. Dan competed in the European Triathlon Championships in Dusseldorf on 25 June 2017 and was selected for the European Championships following a British qualification race in Nottingham in May 2016. The race in Düsseldorf consisted of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. “Despite suffering a crash during the cycling leg of the event, I managed to finish in 10th place in my age category. I would like to thank CSSC for the overwhelming support that I have received in pursuing my sporting ambitions.” If a disability or financial hardship is preventing you from continuing your sport, we may be able to help.

Member Charitable Efforts Each year we are astounded by the efforts put in by our members to raise funds for charitable causes. In 2017 Graham Horne walked 24 miles overnight, Anthony Rowley took part in 12 gruelling physical feats and Theresa Ellis trekked the Inca trail for charity. We salute the efforts of our members by sharing their stories here, but you can read more about their incredible journeys online. cssc.co.uk/member-focus
Stand 2 Support is a group within the Home Office that supports veterans in the work place who are experiencing difficulties as a result of their service.
Graham Horne Stand 2 Support
On 12 August 2017, CSSC member Graham Horne, Home Office staff and Stand 2 Support (S2S), took part in a gruelling Tactical Advance to Battle (TAB) or forced walk from Doncaster Keepmoat Stadium to Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield. Over 24 miles, with some members of the team carrying 35lbs of weight in rucksacks (Bergens) on their back, the group set off from Doncaster at 3:45am and arrived at Hillsborough at 12:30pm. The TAB raised over £4,000 for Ben Parkinson’s charity Pilgrim Bandits. Ben Parkinson welcomed the group at Hillsborough and walked the final few hundred yards with them.
Theresa Ellis Inca Trail Trek
In 2017 Theresa Ellis was part of a team who took part in a 10-day trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic sights in South America, along the Inca Trail through the Peruvian Andes. Trekking on Incapaved paths and steps, the route goes through the lush Cloud Forest to the demanding Dead Woman's Pass (4,200m).
“The ascent to the Sun Gate was via an almost vertical stone staircase but the views of the stunning ruins below were breath-taking.” Theresa took part in this trek to raise funds for the Stars Appeal, a Salisbury District Hospital charity who work hard to help local people across all wards and departments, with particular focus on cancer, cardiac care and children. She and her team raised £4,120 contributing to the collective total sum of £101,810.57 over the years.

Anthony Rowley Twelve in Twelve Anthony Rowley completed fundraising for the Harry Johnson Trust in 2017 by competing in twelve different sporting challenges. The Shropshire charity provides respite support to children and families that are receiving cancer treatment from the Oncology Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford. Anthony’s default activity is cycling, road or mountain bike, with the occasional run or trek so he was keen to expand his sporting horizons with new challenges, the biggest of which was swimming. The first challenge was a half-marathon (Anthony’s first), followed in February, by a self-organised 100 mile cycle sportive with a second half marathon in March.
“Before I had finished one challenge I was already in training for the next one; in the meantime, I was doing classes to improve my swimming whilst also balancing a busy work and, more importantly, family life with my wife and two young boys.” Another first for Anthony was the Duathlon in April, then in May he completed a 100 mile row using a rowing machine. In June, it was time to breakout the mountain bike for a 45 mile off-road ride over the Shropshire Hills then in July, the swim training came to the fore with a self-organised triathlon - The Wrekinathon which involved swimming
0.98km, a 20 mile bike ride and seven ascents of The Wrekin - a distance of 21 miles with 8,000ft of ascent. An injury curtailed Anthony’s efforts over the summer, but in October he completed three separate challenges; a 10km trail run, an organised cycle sportive in South Shropshire and then a second Duathlon through Cannock Chase. In November, it was the second 10km trail run. Over December were twelve mini-challenges including a Strictly Come Dancing salsa exercise session. Andrew raised an impressive £850 for the Harry Johnson Trust.
