Start the day by strolling around the enchanting Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi’s geographic and symbolic centrepiece. Along the way, you’ll see locals jogging or practicing tai chi. You might even catch a session of laughter yoga by the Ly Thai To statue, one of several historical monuments around the lake. Afterwards, seek out the antique-filled courtyard of Café Pho Co and power up with a ca phe trung (coffee with egg and condensed milk).
As you amble down Hang Gai street, admire the shuttered, balconied façades of old townhouses before browsing in the many shops. Tan My Design is renowned for its traditional hand-embroidered fabrics and silk garments but you can also find more contemporary fashion, accessories and homewares by Hanoi-based designers such as Pascale Dang and Bianco Levrin here.
No trip to Hanoi is complete without sampling the incredible street food. Just ask Barack Obama. In 2016, while still US president, he famously joined Anthony Bourdain for a bowl of bun cha (charcoal grilled pork patties and marinated pork belly strips served with cold rice noodles) at Bun Cha Huong Lien. Why not follow in the footsteps of greatness? Just don’t leave it too late, as there’s often a queue for tables.
With its quaint architecture and pulsating street life, wandering through Hanoi’s Old Quarter is a must. But if the feral traffic and blaring horns leave you feeling frazzled, plot a course that ends at Manzi, an independent art space dedicated to developing Hanoi’s contemporary scene but also a haven of peace. Be sure to check out the latest exhibition, then linger over tea or coffee downstairs.

Head northwest to the leafy neighbourhood around Truc Bach Lake. If you’re peckish, stop by Huong Mai for a plate of pho cuon (a snack of rice noodle sheets wrapped around beef and herbs). For a sundowner, Standing Bar, the city’s first and finest taproom, boasts a rotating list of 19 made-in-Vietnam craft beers, including a jasmine IPA by the brewers at Pasteur Street.
For incredible northern Vietnamese cuisine – both classic and contemporary – head to Highway 4, a modern-day institution of Hanoi. The menu is vast and varied, but a feast could potentially begin with catfish spring rolls and a banana flower salad, followed by some mouth-watering claypot dishes, like caramelised braised pork and coconut.
For a nightcap, drop by the writer Nguyen Qui Duc’s bar, Tadioto – billed as a place for “thinkers and drinkers” – where Hanoi’s literary and arty residents can be found quietly imbibing. But if dessert is on your mind, stroll past the Hanoi Opera House to Kem Xoi Thu Nga and treat yourself to the house special kem xoi (coconut ice cream and sticky rice).

A short stroll from Hoan Kiem Lake, and just a few dozen metres from St Joseph’s Cathedral, the Chi Boutique Hotel is located in one of the loveliest parts of the Old Quarter. A lot of attention to detail has also gone into the contemporary, traditional-meetsindustrial design, making this one of the capital’s standout boutique hotels.
