Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety Occupational Health and Safety is a specialized field that focuses on the health and safety needs of employees and the impact of the workplace on the environment. Industry, government, First Nations, and businesses require professionals who can anticipate, assess, and communicate risks, as well as develop programs designed to improve health in the work environment. In this program, students will acquire the necessary skills to work in this demanding field. XOHS 001 Introduction to Occupational Health & Safety This course provides an overview of the Occupational Health and Safety field and discusses how health and safety relate to an organization’s overall management system. Students will be introduced to topics such as leadership commitment, open communication, and legal accountability as core concepts that form the basis for effective safety programs. Also explores the wide variety of functions within the OH&S field and the required resources for the safety generalist.
XOHS 030 Emergency & Disability Management The course focuses on return to work options and opportunities for workers who have suffered injuries and will introduce students to integrated case management planning protocol. Considered a cost reduction tool, students will see how the integrated team approach can be designed to ensure the dignity and well-being of the injured worker. Module topics include an overview of injury management, rehabilitation and return to work, legislation policies and ethics, collective agreement considerations, basics of assessment and treatment, negotiation skills, case studies, and development of a practical injury management plan for the workplace.

XOHS 040 Accident Investigation This course introduces the concepts of how accidents/incidents are caused and provides evidence to support the analysis and investigation of these causes. Students analyze sources, from a historical perspective to current behavioural theories, for their application to today’s workplaces. This program discusses accident investigation techniques and their legal implications. Students conduct a real or mock accident investigation as part of their course requirements.
XOHS 010 Policy, Roles & Responsibilities This course examines existing and proposed federal, provincial, and municipal laws and regulations that pertain to workplace health and the environment. Instruction includes the structure of the legislation and accessing legal information, understanding and working with regulatory agencies, and the consequences of non-compliance.
XOHS 050 The Role of OHS in Project Management An Occupational Health & Safety representative is an important member of any project team. Students in this course will learn about the key role Occupational Health and Safety personnel have within the scope of most any project. Students will be introduced to:
XPRJ 070 Introduction to Project Management This introductory course will provide individuals participating at any level of a project with an understanding of the fundamental concepts for effective project management. Through an introduction to elements spanning the full project life cycle, students will learn how to deliver successful projects on time and on budget.
The role of OHS personnel XOHS 020 Assessment & Control Achieving project objectives relies on the project resources meeting established quality standards based on client needs. In this course, students will explore best practices in managing project quality; identify procurement processes to source project resources; learn techniques to manage the supplier relationship; and learn methods for measuring and interpreting project performance. XRSK 010 Risk Assessment Topics in this course include: Risk management techniques; Risk identification and analysis; Property risks; Income risks; Liability risks; Personnel loss risks; Probability risks; Risk management decision-making; Capital budgeting methods.

Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety APPLICATION PROCESS All students interested in participating in this Certificate program must submit an application package. Each application must include: • Current resume • 1500 word essay on a topic of your choice • Computer-skills testing • Application form Admission Requirements All applicants must have the following for admission to this program: •

TEXTBOOKS The cost of textbooks are in addition to the program fee. Textbooks are estimated at $100 - $150 per course.
SCHEDULE The program runs November 2010 to May 2011. Courses are scheduled in short intensive sessions with time in between for the completion of course assignments and projects. Students should be prepared to commit their full schedule during the intensive sessions to allow for group assignments, readings and other preparations. LEVEL OF PREPARATION Students who successfully complete all requirements of the Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety will have sufficient knowledge for an entry level position in the field of Occupational Health & Safety. Students should expect to invest a minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience at a junior level before moving into positions of greater responsibility.

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION + GRADES In order to complete the Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, students must complete all course requirements at a satisfactory level. All courses will be evaluated on attendance, participation, group or individual assignments, exams or any combination thereof. Courses will be graded according to UNBC’s Grade Scheme. Students who successfully complete all course and program requirements will receive a Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety from UNBC Continuing Studies.
