BRIAN ETZKIN H ead C oach // 13 th S eason

at

CSU // 13 th S eason O verall

One of the most decorated coaches in Cleveland State history, Brian Etzkin will begin his 13th year at the helm of the men’s tennis team, looking to continue the program’s success during the 2014-15 season. Last year Etzkin led the Vikings to their seventh straight appearance in the Horizon League Championship match - continuing Cleveland State’s longstanding tenure as one of the top teams in the Horizon League. Etzkin became the head coach at CSU prior to the 2002-03 season, taking over a men’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. The change came almost overnight, as the Vikings won nine matches during Etzkin’s first year, six more than the previous two years combined. In his time thus far, Etzkin has built a men’s program that is one of the most consistent in the league, finishing in the top half of the standings in nine straight years. Under Etzkin’s guidance the Vikings have been crowned Horizon League Champions five times, claiming the title during the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 seasons. In 2009 the men’s tennis team became the third Cleveland State program to win back-to-back league titles, and in 2010 became the first program in school history to win three-straight. The 2007-08 season marked the first time in program history that CSU earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, and the Vikings have returned four times since then (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013). Under Etzkin, CSU owns a post-season record of 20-12, which includes Horizon League and NCAA tournament appearances. The winningest coach in program history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone during the 2012-13 season, recording his 150th career victory with the men’s program in a 4-3 victory over Binghamton on January 27, 2013. Etzkin currently has an overall record of 176-122 at the helm of the Vikings. Thanks to his accolades, Etzkin has been named Horizon League Coach of the Year three times, earning the honor following the 2007, 2009 and 2010 seasons. In addition, he was named the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Men’s Coach of the Year. Etzkin has mentored eight all-league first team honorees, including four-time nominee Phil Orno (2007, 08, 09, 10) who was also named the Player of the Year as a sophomore. Two Vikings have earned Newcomer of the Year honors under Etzkin; Matt Kuelker following the 2010-11 season and former assistant coach Jay Tee who won the award in 2003. Cleveland State is just as impressive off the court, as 14 Vikings have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes since the 2002-03 season, and the men’s team has received ITA All-Academic honors twice (2009 & 2007). Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsmanship honor; Rob Fox (2011), Steven Wipprecht (2009) and Brad Groleski (2006). Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Under Etzkin, four members of the men’s tennis team have been named officers for the Cleveland State StudentAthlete Advisory Council, including Nolan Marks who will serve as the Vice President during the 2014-15 academic year. Steven Wipprecht (2008-09) and Jay Tee (2005-06) each served as the SAAC President during their careers, while Brad Groleski served as the Vice President (2006-07). ETZKIN COACHING HIGHLIGHTS

BRIAN ETZKIN In addition, the Vikings have gotten involved in many community service projects over the years, including working at the Cleveland Food Bank, adopting a second grade class at Marion-Sterling Elementary school in downtown Cleveland and spending time at the Devon Oaks Assisted Living facility. Etzkin was born in Cleveland and raised in Wooster, but returned to Northeast Ohio after working as an assistant men’s tennis coach at Michigan State. While with the Spartans, he assisted in every aspect of the program, including serving as recruiting coordinator. He also worked as the assistant tennis professional at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in addition to being the Tennis Director and Head Pro at Walnut Hills Country Club. Prior to working with Michigan State, Etzkin spent two years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams at Western Illinois University from 1998-2000. Etzkin also coached the 2002 Midwest Junior Davis Cup team to the national championship in Columbia, S.C. For his efforts with the Bulldogs, Polito was named the 2008 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Assistant Coach of the Year, and promoted to associate head coach in September of 2010. Prior to his time in Athens, Polito spent two years as an assistant coach at Kansas (200406) and two years in the same position at Ohio State (2001-03). With the Jayhawks, Polito’s coaching and recruiting efforts helped make dramatic improvements on and off the court, culminating with ITA All-Academic Team honors and an ITA No. 59 ranking following the 2006 season. At Ohio State, Polito led the Buckeyes to a combined record of 31-19 and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002, he was honored as the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Polito also served as the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe (1999-2001), head coach at Akron (1997-99), assistant coach and interim head coach at Kansas (1996-97), head coach at Sienna Heights (1995) and head coach at Eastern Michigan (1990-95). Polito is a 1990 graduate of Eastern Michigan, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Eagles, and team captain during his senior year. The Lorain, Ohio native earned a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and film from EMU.

CLEVELAND VIKING STATE TENNIS 2013-14 Season Review

2013-14 SEASON REVIEW 2013-14 RESULTS

For the seventh straight year the Cleveland State men’s tennis team advanced to the championship match of the Horizon League Tournament during the 2013-14 season, capping off yet another successful year on the courts. The Vikings, who finished the regular season ranked second among league teams, marked their ninth straight winning season with a 15-8 overall record. The Vikings participated in four tournaments during the fall season - Western Michigan Invitational, Purdue Invitational, Notre Dame Invitational, and ITA Midwest Regional - gaining valuable experience and knowledge prior to the dual match season. During the spring season, the Vikings got off to a slow start, winning just one match out of five over the first three weeks of the season. Cleveland State quickly recovered though, winning seven straight to improve its record to 8-4 midway through the spring slate. During this stretch, the Vikings were able to easily handle the majority of their opponents, giving up just 10 points throughout the seven matches. Cleveland State’s winning streak was snapped on their annual spring break trip, when the Vikings dropped tough matches against SMU and UT Arlington, entering the bulk of the Horizon League season with an 8-6 record. The Vikings got back on the winning track during league play though, finishing the regular season winning six of their last seven matches, picking up league wins against Wright State, Detroit, UIC, and Valparaiso during this stretch. After finishing the regular season with a 5-1 Horizon League record, the Vikings entered the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 2 seed and earned a bye into the semifinals. Cleveland State captured a 4-2 victory over sixth-seeded Youngstown State in the semifinals, advancing to the Championship match of the Horizon League Tournament for the seventh straight year. The Vikings were once again matched up against top-seeded Green Bay in the finals, and came up just short, as the Phoenix earned a 4-3 victory in the championship match. The Vikings were able to pick up a pair of postseason awards from the Horizon League, as Matt Kuelker was named to the All-League First Team and Ali Shabib was named to the All-League Second Team.
