2011-12 Vikings

2011-12 season preview 125 KEY REtuRNERS Ben Willeford - So. Ron Butler - So. Key newcomer Andrew Brown - Fr. The Vikings have a blend of youth and talent at 125 pounds. Ben Willeford is the returning starter, but Ron Butler, the starter during the 2009-10 season, re-joins the team. Last year as a true freshman, Willeford had a strong year, highlighted by his fourth place finish at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships. He also took sixth at the Eastern Michigan Open to cap off a terrific rookie year. Brown, who has good family bloodlines, twice qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament at 130 pounds and adds depth behind two grapplers with varsity experience. 133 KEY REtuRNER Nick Flannery - Fr. Key NewcomerS Michael Carlone - Fr. Jared Beatty - Fr. Nick Flannery, a three-time state champion in Massachusetts, is the incumbent and lone returner at 133 pounds for the Vikings. His first season with the program was a good one as he tied for third on the team with 12 wins, including a team-best five major decisions. His season culminated in a second place finish at the Eastern Michigan Open. Joining the weight class are a pair of freshmen, Michael Carlone and Jared Beatty. Carlone, the News-Hearld’s ‘Wrestler of the Year’ while at Mayfield, was a two-time state placer, including a runner-up finish in his senior season. Beatty, an All-Ohio selection, was 35-4 during his season senior and finished eighth in the state while at Arcanum High School.

141 KEY RETURNers Josh Palivoda - Sr. Tyler Green - R-Fr. Josh Palivoda started two seasons for the Vikings at 133 pounds before redshirting during the 2009-10 season. He was the starter at 141 last year and made a smooth transition up a weight class, finishing the season with six wins. He was the lone Viking to pick up a win against Eastern Michigan, taking a 7-4 decision. Tyler Green, a redshirt freshman, is a four-time West Virginia state finalist and two-time state champ from Parkersburg South. Green won a total of 153 matches in high school and was also awarded the Dave Shultz Excellence Award following his senior season.

Josh Palivoda (above) is one of just two seniors on a team that is bringing in loads of young talent.

157 KEY RETURNERS Matt Donohoe - So. Koort Leyrer - So.

149 KEY RETURNERS Lawrence Cavello - Sr. Mike Mencini - Jr. Brandon Sommers - So.

Redshirt senior Lawrence Cavello, one of just two seniors on the roster, is the returning starter at 149. He tied for third on the team with 12 wins in 2010-11. Cavello, a three-time state qualifier in high school, earned a victory against a Northwestern Wildcat at the Midlands Invitational and had a pin in the second period against league foe Lock Haven in addition to five wins at the CSU Open. In his freshman season, Brandon Sommers won a team-best 21 times while competing in the open circuit. There’s a chance he could bump up to 157, but has already showed he can compete at the 149 level. Mike Mencini is a former starter at 141 pounds but has moved to 149. Last season, he wrestled in open tournaments and won three bouts at 149 at the CSU Open including a technical fall and two decisions.

www.csuvikings.com

KEY NewcomerS Sheldon Brandenburg - Fr. Tanner Lemon - Fr. John Sims - Fr. Matt Donohoe is the incumbent at 157 pounds - a place where he tied for third on the team with 12 wins. He placed sixth at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships and won four times at the CSU Open. Koort Leyrer wrestled nine times at 157, recording a victory via pin. Challenging the second year grapplers will be a trio of true freshmen in Sheldon Brandenburg, Tanner Lemon and John Sims. Brandenburg was a three-time state qualifier at Wadsworth High School, helping the program capture the 2010 Division I state title, the first state wrestling title for the school since 1942. He was fifth in the state at 160 pounds as a junior, and fought injuries to become runner-up at 160 pounds as a senior. Lemon was the runner-up at 145 pounds at the 2011 Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament, helping Massillon Perry place second in Division I. As a junior in 2010, he placed eighth. 2011-12 Wr estling

2011-12 Vikings Sims went 127-19 during his four-year career for Mater Dei High School in Indiana, placing at the Indiana state meet all four seasons. He was sixth as a freshman and fourth as a sophomore before a fifth place finish in 2010 and a runnerup finish at the 2011 tournament. 165 KEY RETURNERS Corey Carlo - Jr. David Phillips- So. KEY NEWCOMERS Xavier Dye - Fr. Michael Monson Jr. - So. Robbie Michaels is lost to graduation, but four wrestlers - two returners and two newcomers - are waiting in the wings. Corey Carlo redshirted last season, but figures to be an experienced candidate on a young roster. David Phillips saw time at both 165 and 174 pounds last year, starting at 165 against Rutgers, Army and the Marine Academy before getting the nod at 174 against Indiana. He’ll be in the mix at 165. Xavier Dye was a state placer at Patrick Henry High School, culminating with a runner-up finish at 160 pounds at the 2011 Ohio High School Athletic Association state meet after a fourth place finish as a junior. Michael Monson Jr. is a transfer from Division III Roger Williams University where he went 13-8 while posting 30 takedowns and 25 escapes to go along with six reversals in his lone season. He placed second at 165 pounds at the New England Wrestling Association league meet.

174 KEY RETURNER Aric Thurn - Jr.

197 KEY RETURNER Nick Anthony - Jr.

KEY NEWCOMERS Troy Benjamin - Fr. Micah Kullman - Fr.

KEY NEWCOMERS Randall Howard - Fr. Tommy Padavick - Fr. Nathan Silvus - Fr.

Aric Thurn started all but one dual meet at 174 pounds as a sophomore and returns for his junior season. He won nine times in 2010-11, including five dual meet victories. He was the only Viking to defeat Kent State, and figures to be primed for his third season. New to the program are Troy Benjamin and Micah Kullman. Benjamin was a National High School Coaches Association Freshman All-American in 2008 after placing fourth nationally at 171 pounds. As a senior at Mexico (N.Y.) High School, he took fifth as a senior at the 2011 New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet. Kullman wrestled for his father at Minerva High School and on the Greco-Roman national team, placing sixth in Division II at 160 pounds at the 2010 Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament to cap off a 35-2 season. 184 Key RETURNERs Corbin Boone - So. Garry Yarborogh - So. KEY NEWCOMER Mitch Gross - Fr. Returning starter Corbin Boone earned five wins and placed sixth at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships at 184 pounds during his redshirt freshman season. After winning all five of his bouts via decision, Boone should be ready to improve in his third year with the program. Garry Yarborogh redshirted last season after injuries ended his season early, but he got off to a hot start and the year on the sidelines could help in terms of preperation. Mitch Gross is a true freshman, and a highly touted one after placing fifth at 171 pounds at the 2010 Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament.

Larry Cavello is one of two seniors on the roster. He had 12 victories in 2010-11 at 149 pounds. 2011-12 Wr estling

www.csuvikings.com

Returning starter Nick Anthony won four matches - all via decision - while wrestling at 197 pounds during the regular season. He placed sixth at the EWL Championships and could be a force this season. Three true freshmen - Randall Howard, Tommy Padavick and Nathan Silvus - are new to the program at 197 pounds. Howard, from nearby Brush High School, can get on a roll, like he did as a senior in 2011 when he started the season 16-0 en route to a 38-2 season. Padavick, from Geneva High School, was twice a district qualifier. In 2010, he was the only member of his high school team to qualify for the OHSAA state meet when he did so at 215 pounds. Silvus, the Clark County 2011 Wrestler of the Year according to the Dayton Daily News, was a state qualifier in both his sophomore and senior seasons at Springfield Shawnee High School. He placed at 215 pounds at the 2011 Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament. 285 KEY RETURNER Chris Weber - Jr. KEY NEWCOMER Rock Davis - Fr.

Chris Weber has started each of the last two seasons. He improved in his sophomore season, placing sixth at the CSU Open in the heavyweight division. He won seven times on the year as the only Viking to compete in his weight class. He’ll have company this year in freshman Rock Davis out of San Diego. The freshman qualified for the state’s Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Masters Meet in 2011 and was highly regarded by TheCaliforniaWrestler.com as a Wrestler to Watch. Ben Stehura enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Cleveland State wrestling program, continuing to build the program with young and talented wrestlers. During his first season at the helm, Stehura continued the trend of coaching a CSU wrestler to the NCAA Championship, leading a Viking grappler to the national tournament for the 48th consecutive season as heavyweight Rashard Goff represented CSU on the national stage. Stehura also coached Goff to an EWL heavyweight championship, the first league champion for CSU since 2006. Stehura will use his experience with coaching a young program and lead the Vikings during the 2010-11 season, working to improve in the EWL and continuing the history and tradition of CSU wrestling. For five seasons before coming to CSU, Stehura was the head coach at Limestone College, a Division II college, in Gaffney, South Carolina. The first head coach in Limestone College history, Stehura played an integral part in developing the program. During 2007-08, he guided the Saints to a 15-4-1 mark, the first winning season in team history. While there he coached one NCAA National Champion, three NCAA All-Americans, five NCAA National Qualifiers and eight NCAA All-Academic team members. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Cleveland State in 2001 under Jack Effner. During that time he was part of a staff that qualified 10 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships, had three EWL individual champions and 14 EWL place winners. In addition, the 2003 squad finished third at the EWL Championship after placing second during the dual meet campaign. Stehura has also coached three U.S. Senior Open All-Americans, four Olympic Team Trial Qualifiers and two Olympic alternates. He is a 2000 graduate of Lock Haven University where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science in secondary education/geography and social studies. In 2003, Stehura earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration. He was a three year starter on the Bald Eagle’s Wrestling team. He earned a fourth and fifth place finish at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament along with a fourth place finish at the EWL Tournament. He was also a member of the EWL All-Academic Team. A member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association, Stehura served as a member of the NCAA Division II East Regional Ranking Committee and the South Carolina Athletics Coaches Association while at Limestone. www.csuvikings.com

2011-12 Wr estling

Josh Zupancic is in his second season serving as the top assistant coach to Ben Stehura at Cleveland State University. He was announced as an addition to the staff on August 11, 2010. Zupancic was only the third two-time All-American in Stanford wrestling history, earning the honor in his junior and senior seasons. In 2006-07, he went 37-12 at 157 pounds and placed seventh at the NCAA Championships. He topped this performance in 2007-2008 when he racked up 39 victories and knocked off three ranked opponents in consecutive matches en route to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Championships. His career record at Stanford was 120-34, making him the third winningest wrestler in program history when he graduated. Zupancic was one of just five Cardinal grapplers to earn 100 career victories, helped by his 47-5 record in dual meets. The National Wrestling Coaches Association named him an Academic All-American in all four of his years as a student-athlete. In both 2005-06 and 2006-07, he was named to the National Wrestling Coaches As-

sociation All-Academic Team as he pursued his degree in American Studies. Stanford named him the team’s Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award winner after the 2006-07 campaign. Prior to his outstanding career at Stanford, Zupancic was a four-time state finalist while attending perennial power Walsh Jesuit High School. As a junior in 2002, he won the state championship while helping Walsh to a second place finish in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II State Championships. The year before, he finished as the state runner-up at 112 pounds, helping Walsh to another second place finish. He was the runner-up at 103 pounds while Walsh captured the Division II title in 2000. Zupancic returns to Northeast Ohio after two years of coaching club wrestling while a graduate student at Oklahoma. He also worked as a student-athlete career counselor at Oklahoma, and has seven years of experience as camp counselor and clinician at various wrestling camps and clinics.

Joe Coughlin joined Ben Stehura’s staff in 2010 as a graduate assistant after spending two years as a volunteer assistant at Drexel University. While helping the Vikings wrestling team, Coughlin will be pursuing his Master’s in public administration. As a student-athlete, Coughlin had a terrific career at George Mason University in addition to earning his degree in communication. He wrapped up his career with a 74-48 record, including a 21-10 record in Colonial Athletic Association matches. Coughlin peaked as a senior, finishing third on the team with 22 wins while wrestling exclusively at 133 pounds. He set a new career high by recording eight falls and finished third on the team with five major decisions. He finished third at 133 pounds at both the Navy Classic and CAA Championships.

Coughlin posted a 5-3 record in CAA matches in 2007-08 at 133 pounds, but was 14-3 in his first two seasons while wrestling at 125 pounds. In 2005-06, he was tied for the team lead with eight conference victories. Prior to his days at George Mason, he had a solid fouryear varsity career at Hatboro-Horsham High School (Pa.). Coughlin posted 107 career victories and was selected first-team all-league as a senior after earning all-league honorable mention status in 2001, 2002 and 2003. In 2004, his senior campaign, he placed fifth at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Class AAA state tournament and qualified on two other occasions. Academically, Coughlin made the Pennsylvania AllAcademic team for his efforts in the classroom and made the Honor Roll at George Mason.

Alex Camargo returns for his second season on Ben Stehura’s staff, assisting the Vikings as a volunteer assistant coach. Camargo, one of the finest wrestlers in the state while at Berea High School, certainly will help recruiting in their area. After his high school days, he stayed close to home and attended Kent State and left as the winningest grappler in school history. Camargo became just the second Kent State wrestler to capture a Mid-American Conference title at 184 pounds when he did so as a senior during the 2006 season. When he won the title match at the conference tournament, he became the winningest wrestler in program history, improving his career mark to 126-40. He currently sits second in school history after Danny

Mitcheff graduated with 131 victories and is one of just nine Golden Flash wrestlers to surpass 100 career victories. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and went 4-2, falling one point shy of becoming the first Kent State wrestler to earn All-American status in 20 years. Carmargo was highly touted as a prep after finishing second at 171 pounds as a senior in the 2001 Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament. In 2000, he helped the Braves to place 13th at the state meet before propelling Berea to a 24th ranking in 2001. Camargo, who graduated from Kent State with a degree in technology, is currently working at NASA. He serves as an engineering apprentice at the John Glenn Space Center.

Director of Athletics 2nd Year at CSU John Parry, a veteran of intercollegiate athletics, including 17 years within the Horizon League, served as Interim Director of Athletics in 2010-11 and was named to the position full-time in April of 2011. Prior to coming to Cleveland State, Parry was the Director of Athletics for 16 years at Butler University, and has already impacted CSU athletics. “Having worked with John for almost 18 years, he is a valuable asset to both Cleveland State University and intercollegiate athletics,” Horizon League commissioner Jon LeCrone said. “It has been great to have him once again be part of the Horizon League team where he brings his experience, keen insights and perspectives to the table.” Since arriving in Cleveland, Parry has worked to integrate Global Spectrum and Nelligan Sports into the university structure, a pair of strategic marketing partners who will help to provide the department with increased revenue streams. Global Spectrum took over operational control of the Wolstein Center in 2010 while Nelligan Sports represents the university to create sponsorship and marketing opportunities. Parry has also coordinated the addition of staff in administration, athletic training, strength and conditioning and reorganized the athletic ticketing and marketing departments. Growth is nothing new to Parry, who oversaw an era of unparalleled success while serving as Director of Athletics at Butler from 1990 to 2006. Under Parry, Butler expanded its sports offer2011-12 Wr estling

ings, added and improved athletic facilities, and experienced one of its greatest single periods of athletic achievement. Butler captured its first Horizon League James J. McCafferty Trophy for all-sports excellence in 1996-97, and the Bulldogs repeated that honor in 1997-98, 1998-99, 2001-02 and 2002-03. Bulldog teams captured 55 conference regular season/tournament championships during his tenure and made NCAA National Championship appearances in men’s and women’s basketball, football, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, lacrosse, men’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and baseball. Parry was at the helm when Butler built the foundation to the men’s basketball program that culminated with NCAA title game appearances in 2010 and 2011. During Parry’s time in Indianapolis, the Bulldogs made five of the school’s first six NCAA Tournament appearances in men’s basketball, including a berth in the NCAA’s “Sweet 16” in 2003. In addition, the men’s cross country team posted what was then Butler’s highest NCAA finish ever with a fourth-place showing at the 2004 national meet, and Victoria Mitchell captured Butler’s first national championship in 73 years with a first place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Track and Field meet. One of the cornerstones to Parry’s leadership philosophy is excellence both on and off the playing field. His emphasis on academics helped Butler lead the Horizon League in number of studentathletes named to the academic honor roll in nine of his final 10 years. In the process, Bulldog student-athletes accumulated numerous league, regional and national academic honors. In 1991, 1997, 2000 and 2006 Butler served as co-host to the men’s basketball Final Four in Indianapolis, while co-hosting the women’s Final Four in 2005. A past member of the NCAA Division I Management Council (1997-2004) and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Issues Committee (2000-02), Parry was named the 2002-03 Central Region Division I-AA Athletic Director of the Year by the National

Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He also served as a member of the Executive Committee of NACDA from 1998-2002. A native of Marcellus, N.Y., Parry attended Brown University where he was a two-time All-Ivy League pass receiver and co-captain of the football team while also lettering in basketball and lacrosse. Parry earned a B.A. in economics from Brown, and a master’s in business administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. After earning his degrees, Parry spent eight years in business with IBM and then as co-founder of Instant Data Inc., in Philadelphia. He completed football and lacrosse coaching stints at Brown while working as the assistant athletic director (1975-79). Parry was named Director of Athletics at Brown in 1979, a position he held for 11 years until leaving for Butler in 1990. During his time with the Bears, he oversaw a department that featured 30 intercollegiate sports for men and women, leading the school to the best overall women’s won-lost record in the Ivy league during the decade of the 1980’s. He served as the founding director of the Brown University Sports Foundation, an endowment fund that has grown to better than $60 million today. Facilitating growth dominated Parry’s years at Brown. He oversaw the planning, funding and building of a $7 million student recreation center and a $9 million intercollegiate athletic complex. A life-long lover of the sport of lacrosse, Parry served two stints on the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse committee. The first from 1980-87 while he was at Brown and then again from 1994-98 while at Butler, becoming one of a handful of people to be selected chair of the committee twice, doing so in both 1986-87 and 1997-98. Parry has two daughters, Alyson, a ’91 graduate of Brown, and Jennifer, a ’93 graduate of Middlebury College (Vermont). He and his wife, Candis, a respected lacrosse and field hockey official, have a 20-year-old son, J.C., who is enrolled at Ursinus College, and an 18-year-old daughter, Ashley, a freshman at the College of Wooster.

2011-12 Vikings

2010-11 season in review A young Viking squad - many of which were competing at the varsity level for the first time finished the 2010-11 season with a dual meet record of 3-13. It was season number three under head coach Ben Stehura, and the first year with Josh Zupancic, Joe Coughlin and Alex Camargo on the staff. That being said, 2010-11 will be looked at as a necessary year for the long-term development of the program. Freshmen led the way in the lower weight classes. Ben Willeford won 10 times - including two pins and four major decisions - at 125 pounds. At 133, Nick Flannery recorded 12 wins, tied for third most on the team. Josh Palivoda was the only grappler to compete at 141 and won six times in his first year wrestling in that weight class. Larry Cavello won 12 times at 149, and Brandon Sommers excelled on the open circuit with 21 victories. Matt Donohoe and Koort Leyrer were both freshman at 157, and Donohoe won 12 times to solidify himself as the starter at that spot.

Standout Robbie Michaels finished with 20 victories at 165 pounds and ended his career as one of the finer wrestlers to come through the program in recent years. Behind him, David Phillips got his feet wet at 165 and earned his first collegiate victory. Sophomore Aric Thurn was a winner on nine occasions at 174 pounds, and freshman Corbin Boone won five bouts in his first varsity season at 184. Nick Anthony stepped up in his second year starting at 197 and won four times. Chris Weber, also starting for the second consecutive season, won seven times and captured sixth place at the CSU Open. When all was said and done, six CSU grapplers recorded double-digit wins after just four accomplished that feat the year before. Despite a team record of 3-13, the Vikings placed five wrestlers at the Eastern Wrestling League Championships. Willeford was fourth at 125, while Donohoe (157), Michaels (165), Boone (184) and Anthony (197) all placed sixth in their respective weight classes.

In the Vikings three victories, they won by a combined score of 92-26. Robbie Michaels was named as the team’s wrestler of the year and while losing him will certainly hurt, the 2010-11 season was undoubtedly a valuable experience for handfuls of wrestlers who were getting acquainted to the Division I level.

Dick bonacci inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Dick Bonacci, who won 296 dual matches, coached eight All-Americans and sent wrestlers to 34 consecutive NCAA Championships during his Cleveland State coaching tenure, was a member of the inaugural class of inductees into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Ohio Chapter. He was inducted on Sept. 12, 2010 in Dublin, Ohio. Bonacci, who is already a member of five Hall of Fames, was joined by Chris Ford (Ohio State), Jim Humphrey (Ohio State), Harry Houska (Ohio), Richard “Doc” Leffler (St. Francis deSales HS) and George Kovalick (Bridgeport HS) in the initial class. “I am really excited and honored,” Bonacci said. “I’ve been fortunate to be inducted into five other Halls of Fame but none have been nationally. It all 16 C l e v e l a n d S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y

goes back to the kids who wrestled for me. Without them, I wouldn’t be in there. This is the big one.” When Bonacci arrived at Fenn College in 1962, he revived a wrestling program that had been dormant for almost 30 years. He guided the Foxes through the change to Cleveland State and turned the wrestling program into the most successful program in the athletic department. In his 36 seasons at CSU, he compiled a 296177-9 record that featured 31 winning seasons. The Vikings posted winning records in a school-record 19 consecutive seasons from 1964-65 through 1980-81. A native Clevelander, he became one of the city’s wrestling legends at West High School where he starred for three magnificent seasons during which he never lost a match. He won the state championship at 139 lbs. in 1949, 155 lbs. in 1950 and 164 lbs. in 1951 while his team also reached levels of success which have not been equalled since. Bonacci enrolled at the University of Toledo where he won Mid-American Conference titles at 167 lbs. in 1953 and 1954 and at 177 lbs. in 1955, serving as team captain during his final two seasons. www.csuvikings.com

He won four tournament titles in 1954 and 1955 after finishing second in the National Greco-Roman championships and fourth in the National AAU Championships in 1953. In 1956, he was asked to fill in as coach at Toledo while head coach Joe Scalzo was coaching the U.S. Olympic Grego-Roman team. A period of coaching at the youth level followed until athletic director Homer Woodling asked him to help start a varsity program at Fenn College for the 1962-63 season. It was a request that has never been regretted. His induction into the CSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983 in his first year of eligibility followed earlier entries into the Ohio Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the University of Toledo Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Eastern Wrestling League Hall of Fame in 1999. Bonacci and his wife, Nancy, currently reside in Rocky River. They are the parents of three daughters, Tami Grauer, a local attorney and graduate of CSU’s Marshall School of Law, Shari Rooney, an elementary school teacher and CSU graduate, and Kathy Bonacci, a model and a graduate of the Ohio State University. 2011-12 Wr estling

2011-12 Vikings

year-by-year history 1977-78 The Vikings end 18 years as a wrestling independent, joining the Eastern Wrestling League. In their first season in the league, CSU goes 11-4 and finishes behind only Penn State in the EWL Championship. CSU sends a record six wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. Ron Varga is named the EWL’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

1931-32 Fenn College goes 3-3 in its first season of intercollegiate wrestling. The Foxes pick up a pair of wins over Akron and one over Thiel to highlight the inaugural season. 1932-33 Coach Spike Sperry’s squad compiles an 0-4 record. Thiel avenges its loss from the previous season, defeating the Foxes, 14-13. 1933-34 Fenn opens the season with five straight losses before picking up the final win for the next 28 years, defeating Baldwin-Wallace, 21-15. 1962-63 Fenn College revives the wrestling program, going 4-5 in Dick Bonacci’s first year as head coach. 1963-64 Dick Bonacci’s Foxes finish with a 2-7 record. Bonacci’s squads will finish above .500 for the next 17 seasons. 1964-65 In the final season as Fenn College, the Foxes compile an 8-2 mark, finishing the year with five straight wins. John Nusrallah becomes the first NCAA Qualifier in school history, beginning a streak of at least one qualifier each year that continues to this day.

Toby Matney became Cleveland State’s first Division I All-American in 1978-79. 1968-69 Cleveland State’s string of 20 straight dual meet wins, dating back to the middle of the 1966-67 season, is snapped by Ball State, 18-13. Barylski is again the lone representative at the NCAA Championships for CSU. 1969-70 Lee Barylski and Frank Yoo become CSU’s first AllAmericans, with Barylski finishing fifth at the national championships and Yoo taking third place. The Vikings finish the season with a 9-2 mark. 1970-71 The Vikings finish 4-3-1, with Paul Azzariti becoming the third All-American in school history by finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships. 1971-72 Cleveland State returns to its dominant form, finishing 10-2. Tony DiGiovanni finishes sixth at the NCAA Championships, the first of his two All-American finishes. 1972-73 Tony DiGiovanni improves one spot on his placing from the previous season. Tom Cavanaugh joins him as an All-American, earning the highest finish by a Viking wrestler, placing second.

Dick Bonacci served as head coach of the Fenn College and Cleveland State wrestling programs for 36 years. 1965-66 Cleveland State opens its doors, and the newly named Vikings finish with a 9-1 record. An 18-11 loss to Hiram is the only blemish on the ledger. Nusrallah makes his second NCAA Championship appearance. 1966-67 CSU again finishes just one win away from perfection, ending the year 8-1. Again, Hiram is the spoiler of the perfect season, winning 29-10. Hank Shenk advances to the NCAA Championships, and earns CSU’s first win at the national meet. 1967-68 CSU puts together the first perfect season in school history, going 9-0. Hiram, the school that kept the Vikings from perfection the two previous seasons, is beaten by CSU, 25-13. Lee Barylski makes the first of three consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. 18 C l e v e l a n d S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y

1978-79 CSU won both the dual meet title and the EWL Tournament Championship in just its second season in the league, finishing 15-1 overall. Toby Matney becomes the first NCAA Division I All-American in school history, finishing fifth. 1979-80 Dan Foldesy and Bill Walsh advance to the NCAA Championships, as the Vikings go 9-4 on the season. The league has brought together several traditional powerhouse programs in the Mid-Atlantic

Region, and has expanded through the years to include some of the biggest names in collegiate wrestling. The league was formed before the 1975-76 season with Bloomsburg, Buffalo, Clarion, Lock Haven, Penn State and Pittsburgh as charter members. Two years later, Cleveland State and West Virginia brought the total number of schools to eight before Buffalo’s departure later that year. Millersville was added in 1981-82, but withdrew from the league after the 1983-84 season. Penn State would later leave the league when the rest of its programs joined the Big Ten, but the addition of Edinboro has kept the league stable at seven teams. Upon entering the league, Cleveland State immediately proved it belonged by finishing second in the EWL tournament in its first season. The next season, the Vikings claimed both the dual meet and tournament championships, the only time in school history CSU has completed the sweep. Cleveland State has crowned 24 Eastern Wrestling League champions, including at least one in each of its first four seasons in the league.

During Cleveland State’s 30 seasons as a member of the league, the EWL has honored two Vikings as the Most Outstanding Wrestler. Ron Varga (1978) and Dan Foldesy (1980 & 1983) each earned the honor, adding to the Viking lore in the EWL. 2010-11 Eastern Wrestling League Final Standings
