Steve Weir H e a d C o a c h // 7 t h S e a so n Steve Weir has put his stamp on the Cleveland State men’s and women’s golf programs during his six years at the helm. During his tenure, the men’s squad has captured three Horizon League titles and three NCAA appearances, while the 13-year old women’s program has shown growth each year into a league contender. A tireless recruiter, Weir has continually brought in highly-decorated players, including several all-state selections and student-athletes who have competed in and won prestigious tournaments. In his six seasons at the helm, Weir has developed 17 All-Horizon League players, including Jake Scott who claimed medalist honors at the league championship in 2008 and 2009, Kent Monas, the 2011 Horizon League Player of the Year and current senior Andrew Bailey who has garnered Horizon League Player of the Year honors in each of the last two seasons. Last season, Weir guided the men’s squad to a runner-up finish at the league championship, while the women’s squad placed third, the second best finish in program history. Two seasons ago, Weir led a pair of youthful squads to top four finishes at the Horizon League Championship with the men - featuring two sophomores and one freshman - to a third place finish and the women’s team - with four sophomores and one freshman - to a fourth place finish. The 2010-11 season saw Weir lead the men’s squad to the Horizon League Championship - the squad’s fourth league title in the last six years, while helping the women place fourth with a team that featured three freshmen and two sophomores. Under Weir, the men’s team has enjoyed unprecedented success, capturing the 2008, 2009 and 2011 Horizon League titles and advancing to the NCAA Regional Championship all three years. In addition, seven players have earned medalist honors under the direction of Weir, while the 2007-08 squad set the school record for lowest round, firing 277 during the first and second rounds at the IPFW Fall Classic. At the 2011 league championship, Andrew Bailey and Michael Klaric tied for co-medalist honors. Weir has also led the women’s program to new heights during the last six years, guiding the squad to a second place finish at the league tournament in 2009, the best showing in program history. He has also helped the squad post several of the lowest rounds in school history, including the four lowest rounds set in the spring of 2013. The Vikings shattered the school record with a final round 305 at the Bowling Green Invitational on April 14, 2013, which helped CSU set a single-season school record scoring average of 320.0 last year.

Steve Weir But Weir’s successes go beyond the golf course as both teams have also been successful in the classroom. That was never more apparent than in 2009 when the women’s team captured the “Best of the Best” Team Award at the John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon in April. The award, presented to the sport having the highest team grade point average in the athletics department, went to women’s golf which boasted a 3.71 team GPA with all six student-athletes having at least a 3.20. Weir joined the CSU golf staff as an assistant coach in 2007 with a familiarity to the Viking program, having served as an assistant coach to the men’s and women’s squads in 2006-07. He has also been the Assistant Golf Professional at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinkley since April, 2007. He had an outstanding collegiate career, spending time at Kent State and BaldwinWallace before enrolling at CSU in September of 2005. In his lone golf season as a Viking, Weir earned first team All-Horizon League honors in 2006 and was a two-time Horizon League Golfer of the Week. He was second on the team in stroke average (75.3), carding a school-record, eightunder-par 63 en route to a runner-up finish at the Belmont Intercollegiate. Weir also finished second at the Dayton Spring Invitational, helping the Vikings win the team title by eight shots. Weir was a large factor in the Vikings claiming the 2006 Horizon League Championship and advancing to the NCAA regionals, shooting rounds of 70-72-74 (216) and finishing 11th overall. In 2005, Weir captured the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship and also advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. At Baldwin-Wallace, Weir holds the best season average in school-history when he posted 75.2 strokes per round in the fall of 2003, including a low round of 70. Weir and his wife, Alicia, reside in Berea with their one year old daughter, Kinslee, and newborn son, Bryce.
Rachael Pruett A sso c i at e H e a d C o a c h // 1 s t S e a so n Rachael Pruett, who spent the last two years at Ball State after a four-year playing career for the Cardinals, has been named the associate head golf coach at Cleveland State. For the last two years, Pruett has served as the graduate assistant coach at Ball State, helping the Cardinals to a runner-up finish at the 2011-12 Mid-American Confernce tournament. Pruett was a four-year letterwinner at Ball State from 2007-10, finishing her career with a 78.78 scoring average, second all-time in Ball State history. A member of the 2010 All-MAC tournament team when she placed fifth, Pruett won the 2010 Ball State Cardinal Classic for her first career victory. She carded rounds of 72-70 (142) with her final round 70 a career-low. Pruett was an Academic All-MAC selection as a junior and senior and was a four-time NGCA All-America Scholar. The 2010 Ball State Unsung Hero Award recipient, Pruett earned the team’s Most Improved Player award as a sophomore. She graudated magna cum laude in 2010 with an exercise science major. A native of Linton, Ind., Pruett played high school golf at Linton-Stockton, earning all-state honors as a senior when she posted a 76.6 scoring average.

The John Telich, Sr. Golf Technology Center On Feb. 12, 2004 Cleveland State officially dedicated the John Telich Sr. Golf Technology Center. Housed in the Physical Education Building, the facility provides CSU’s men’s and women’s teams a first class facility in which to train year-round, giving them an advantage over much of their competition. First-year head coach Brian Varsey noted how fortunate he was to inherit such a first-class facility. “We are grateful for the generosity of Mr. Telich in providing for a unique complete environment for our student athletes to learn and grow. As a team and an athletic department we are proud it has his name and embodies his continued commitment to Cleveland State University golf. We wouldn’t be where we are today without him.” The Tech Center provides a year round home for the Viking golf program. It contains a three-station, full swing practice area as well as a recently-completed five hundred-square foot contoured putting surface. The tech center also includes a sophisticated video monitoring system and an equipment storage area. A separate lounge area with couches and a television completes the tech center, offering relaxation space for the golfers to unwind after a hard days’ work.
