Brian Etzkin H e a d C o a ch // 12 t h S e a s o n One of the most decorated coaches in Cleveland State history, Brian Etzkin will begin his 12th year at the helm of the men’s tennis team, looking to continue the program’s success during the 2013-14 season. Last year Etzkin led the Vikings back to the top of the Horizon League standings – as CSU captured its fifth Horizon League Championship in the past six seasons. With the league title, the Vikings earned their fifth NCAA appearance, capping off the season by facing fifth-ranked Ohio State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. During 2013-14 Etzkin will have the pleasure of working with a strong core of returners – as all but two letterwinners from last year’s championship squad will return. Included in this group is the trio of Jorg van der Vloet, Ali Shabib and Matt Kuelker – all of whom earned All-League honors last season under Etzkin’s guidance. Etzkin became the head coach at CSU prior to the 2002-03 season, taking over a men’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. The change came almost overnight, as the Vikings won nine matches during Etzkin’s first year, six more than the previous two years combined. In his time thus far, Etzkin has built a men’s program that is one of the most consistent in the league, finishing in the top half of the standings in eight straight years. Under Etzkin’s guidance the Vikings have been crowned Horizon League Champions five times, claiming the title during the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 seasons. In 2009 the men’s tennis team became the third Cleveland State program to win back-to-back league titles, and in 2010 became the first program in school history to win three-straight. The 2007-08 season marked the first time in program history that CSU earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, and the Vikings have returned four times since then (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013). Over the past 10 seasons CSU owns a post-season record of 19-10. The winningest coach in program history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone during the 2012-13 season, recording his 150th career victory with the men’s program in a 4-3 victory over Binghamton on January 27, 2013. Etzkin currently has an overall record of 161-114 at the helm of the Vikings. Thanks to his accolades, Etzkin has been named Horizon League Coach of the Year three times, earning the honor following the 2007, 2009 and 2010 seasons. In addition, he was named the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Men’s Coach of the Year. Etzkin has mentored seven all-league first team honorees, including four-time nominee Phil Orno (2007, 08, 09, 10) who was also named the Player of the Year as a sophomore. Two Vikings have earned Newcomer of the Year honors under Etzkin; Matt Kuelker following the 2010-11 season and former assistant coach Jay Tee who won the award in 2003. Cleveland State is just as impressive off the court, as 14 Vikings have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes since the 2002-03 season, and the men’s team has received ITA All-Academic honors twice (2009 & 2007). Last season, Jay Jones and Niklas Jonsson earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors - marking the second accolade for Jones and the first for Jonsson. Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsmanship honor; Rob Fox (2011), Steven Wipprecht (2009) and Brad Groleski (2006). Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Over the past 10 years three members of the men’s tennis team have been officers for the Cleveland State Student-Athlete Advisory Council, including Wipprecht and Tee who each served as the council president. Wipprecht served in the role during the 2008-09 season, while Tee served as president during 2005-06. Groleski also served as the vice president during the 2006-07 sea-

Brian Etzkin son. For the 2013-14 academic year, Nolan Marks will serve as SAAC representative for the men’s tennis team. In addition, the Vikings have gotten involved in many community service projects over the years, including working at the Cleveland Food Bank, adopting a second grade class at Marion-Sterling Elementary school in downtown Cleveland and spending time at the Devon Oaks Assisted Living facility. Frank Polito A s s i s ta n t C o a ch // S e c o n d S e a s o n Frank Polito returns for his second season as an assistant coach with the Cleveland State men’s tennis team during 2013-14, looking to continue the success from a year-ago when the Vikings claimed their fifth Horizon League Championship. Polito helped guide the Vikings to their fifth NCAA appearance last season, coaching three All-League honorees – including First Team honoree Jorg van der Vloet. Polito joined the Cleveland State coaching staff during the 2012-13 season after a six-year stint as an assistant coach with the women’s tennis team at Georgia. During his tenure, the Bulldogs posted an overall record of 139-29, won two regular season SEC championships, claimed three SEC tournament titles and advanced past the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament three times. Georgia also finished the year ranked in the ITA top-10 five out of his six years. For his efforts with the Bulldogs, Polito was named the 2008 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Assistant Coach of the Year, and promoted to associate head coach in September of 2010. Prior to his time in Athens, Polito spent two years as an assistant coach at Kansas (2004-06) and two years in the same position at Ohio State (2001-03). With the Jayhawks, Polito’s coaching and recruiting efforts helped make dramatic improvements on and off the court, culminating with ITA All-Academic Team honors and an ITA No. 59 ranking following the 2006 season. At Ohio State, Polito led the Buckeyes to a combined record of 31-19 and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002, he was honored as the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Polito also served as the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe (19992001), head coach at Akron (1997-99), assistant coach and interim head coach at Kansas (1996-97), head coach at Sienna Heights (1995) and head coach at Eastern Michigan (1990-95). Polito is a 1990 graduate of Eastern Michigan, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Eagles, and team captain during his senior year. The Lorain, Ohio native earned a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and film from EMU.

Nicole Janek S t u d e n t A s s i s ta n t C o a ch // F i r s t S e a s o n Nicole Janek will begin her first year as a student assistant coach with the Cleveland State tennis teams during 2013-14, after spending four years as a Viking student-athlete. Throughout her career, Janek posted 70 singles victories, ranking her fifth all-time at CSU. She also led the Vikings to backto-back Horizon League championship match appearances during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. “I am really pleased to have Nicole working with the teams this season. As a student-athlete she was a vocal leader on the court for us and hopefully that will continue now that she is helping from the sidelines,” head coach Brian Etzkin said. Janek is currently finishing her degree in middle childhood education.

2012-13 Team Results

The 2012-13 season was a memorable one for the Cleveland State men’s tennis team, as they captured their fifth Horizon League Championship in the past six seasons. The Vikings, under 11th-year head coach Brian Etzkin, ended the season with a 12-12 record, marking the eighth straight year that CSU finished .500 or better. Cleveland State’s memorable season got off to a strong start, as the Vikings captured four titles during the fall season. The doubles team of Ali Shabib and Niklas Jonsson picked up two titles - WMU Invite & Purdue Invite - while Jorg van der Vloet and Matt Kuelker picked up a doubles crown at the Purdue Invite and Matt Ford and Kuelker captured another doubles title at the Ball State Invite. After an excellent fall season, the Vikings struggled in the beginning of their spring schedule, picking up just two wins throughout their first eight matches against tough opponents including No. 4 Ohio State. During this opening stretch the Vikings faced Illinois State, and despite the 5-2 loss to the Redbirds, CSU’s top doubles team of Shabib and Jonsson posted an upset victory over an ISU doubles tandem that was ranked No. 58 in the country at the time. After the first seven weeks of the spring season the Vikings had a 3-9 record, but rattled off three straight wins over Detroit, Duquesne and Youngstown State, improving to 6-9. CSU dropped its next two matches, including its first league loss against Green Bay, but rebounded to close out the regular season on a four-match win streak. Entering the Horizon League Tournament the Vikings stood at 10-11 on the season, with their 5-1 league record earning them the No. 2 seed in the championship bracket. In their semifinal contest the Vikings pulled out a 4-3 victory over sixth-seeded Detroit, advancing to the championship match for the sixth straight season. For the second time in as many years CSU faced Green Bay in the championship match, this time coming out on the winning end of a 4-3 decision. With doubles wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, and singles wins from van der Vloet (No. 1), Shabib (No. 3), and Jonsson (No. 4), the Vikings upset top-seeded Green Bay - capturing their fifth Horizon League title in program history.
