2013 Season Preview The 2013 season marks the 10th anniversary of the Cleveland State women’s soccer program and head coach Derrek Falor believes this is the deepest team he has had with close to 20 players capable of drawing a starting assignment. That depth should lead to a bigger rotation this year to help keep players healthier as the season wears on. The mix includes a number of veterans as well as newcomers who Falor believes will have an immediate impact on the program. The goal this year is to play at a faster tempo, utilizing 20 to 22 players per match and not burning anyone out during the first few weeks of the season. “This is a deep roster and there won’t be a drop off from the starters to reserves at each position,” Falor said. “There will be times this year when we substitute three or four at a time, but that will help us keep players fresh and reduce the amount of minutes everyone plays. “We want to play at a faster tempo this year and defend with pressure. In order to do that, each player is going to have to bring something to the field when called upon and I think we will see our subs having a larger impact on games this year with the energy they will be expected to bring.” GOALKEEPERS Sophomore Sarah Wood is the most experienced goalkeeper in the program, having played in 17 matches with 14 starts in her two years at CSU. Wood, who missed all but two games with a knee injury in 2011, started 12 matches last season, recording 61 saves and a .693 save percentage. “Sarah has all the physical tools to be one of the top goalkeepers in the league,” Falor said. “She is technically very sound.” A pair of freshmen, Sierra Davis and Jane Piontkowski, will also battle for minutes in the net. Davis missed her senior season at South Park H.S. after a knee injury, but posted a 62-7-5 mark with 52 shutouts during her career. An all-state pick as a junior, she allowed just 34 goals over three seasons. “Sierra and Jane are both very good goalkeepers,” Falor said. “They bring a lot of energy to the field, have good lateral movement and communicate very well.” DEFENSE The CSU defense returns several key pieces, including senior three-year starter Frederike Dubeau who will anchor the backline. One of the most physical defenders in the Horizon League,

Dubeau was one of just three players to start all 17 matches last year and has started all but one of her 54 career matches. “Freddy has been playing back in Washington this summer and the environment has been great for her,” Falor said. “She will be moving back to a role as a center back that fits her better and will allow her to play pressure free.” Also returning to the backline as a center back next to Dubeau is junior Sabrina Abram, who has started 19 of the 22 career matches she has played in. “Sabrina was never able to get fully healthy last year, but had a much better spring,” Falor said. “She is as fit as anyone and was very assertive and took control in the spring.” The quartet of Chloe Fadenholz, Kelcey Fischer, Jen Jankowski and Samantha Sarmento give Falor a number of options to combine at outside back, a position he wants to see be more dynamic this year, especially on the attack. “We will have the ability to experiment in the preseason and find the right combination that can drive the attack,” Falor said. “We want to take more risks this year and push the outside backs up and into one-on-one attacks against defenders to put pressure on the opponent. Each of the four players bring something different to the field and I am excited to see how this evolves.” Fadenholz played in 16 matches last year, making eight starts and ranked fifth on the team with five points on two goals and one assist. Fischer played 12 matches last year, scoring three goals. That came on the heels of Fischer playing in all 19 matches with 16 starts as a freshman. Jankowski returns to the lineup after a knee injury cost her all but seven games last year. She was a first team All-Ohio selection as a senior at Medina H.S. wen she was regarded as one of the top defenders in the state. Sarmento saw action in four matches with one start last season, tallying the assist in CSU’s 1-0 win over Duquesne. Freshman Elise Sailors, who joined the team in mid-September last year but didn’t play in any matches, was very impressive in the spring and will push for time. “Elise has been a very pleasant surprise for us,” Falor said. “She has a very positive attitude and is very consistent.” Sophomore Megan Zidonis, as well as freshmen Grace Condit and Marissa Sarsfield, will also vie for time. An all-league pick as a senior, Sarsfield helped Springdale H.S. to the state semifinals three times in her career, while Condit was a first team all-league selection as a senior at Springboro H.S.

Season Preview MIDFIELD Falor will combine a talented group of returnees with a solid batch of underclassmen to form the midfield nucleus. Headlining the group is junior Shea Levi, an all-newcomer team selection as a freshman, who has handled the central midfield position during her first two seasons. She has started 30 of her 34 career matches, amassing two goals and one assist. “Shea is very good at possessing the ball and setting up people in the attack,” Falor said. “She is a very good facilitator and this role works very well for her because she is able to get any number of players going offensively.” Falor and his staff will need to find who compliments Levi on the field, but with sophomores Allie Sieradzki, Erin O’Toole and freshman Megan Barrick capable of filling the role, Falor is excited to see how it plays out. “This will be an interesting battle because all three players bring something different to the field,” Falor said. “Allie and Erin are physical and can play on both ends of the field and Megan is extremely polished for a freshman. We need someone who is a little more defensive minded and can do some grunt work. Our goal in the preseason is to mix some different combinations and see what works best for us.” Sieradzki is a physical presence who can work from box to box. Last season, she scored one goal while just scratching the surface of collegiate soccer. O’Toole is another physical player who was a key member of CSU’s defense last year, playing in 16 matches with nine starts. Barrick was a team captain as a senior at Gahanna H.S., helping her team to a league and district titles as a junior. Junior Lauren Mesaros has not been able to get on the field during her two years in the program because of injuries, but does provide the squad with experience. FORWARD Falor has manned the program with a ton of offensive firepower up front with the hopes of improving on the 22 goals scored last season. The group of senior Taylor Vidovic, junior Amanda Sivic, sophomore Vickie Havas and freshmen Sarah Kaiser and Haleigh Shingary will be the driving force behind scoring points this year and will fight for the four starting spots during the preseason.

A second team all-league selection as a sophomore when she scored seven goals, Vidovic garnered much of the attention from opposing defenses last season, but still managed to dish out three assists. Her eight career goals are tied for sixth most all-time at CSU. Miller has played in 33 matches with eight starts in her career, scoring one goal. Sivic will add a fresh face up front as she returns to Cleveland after spending two years at Dayton where she played in 22 games. A two-time All-Ohio honoree at Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Sivic earned conference MVP honors as a senior. “Amanda will be one of the best attackers we have had in the program,” Falor said. “She is happy to be here and already has two years of experience playing collegiate soccer. She has seen a lot and knows what it takes to be successful at this level.” Havas earned a spot on the Horizon League All-Newcomer team last season when she ranked second in the league in assists (5) and fourth in goals (5) and points (15). She managed at least one point in eight of the 15 matches she appeared in. “Vickie will have a little more freedom this year and the hope is to let her be a little more creative with the ball,” Falor said. “She will not inhabit just one spot on the field this year and when she has the ball at her feet and space, she has the potential to be extremely dangerous.” Shingary was one of the top players during the preseason last year, but had her season cut short when she injured her knee in an exhibition contest. She had a very successful high school career at Holy Name, scoring 32 career goals and earning all-conference honors four times. Kaiser could prove to be the wild card up front. A scoring machine at Mercyhurst Prep, she concluded her career as the all-time leader in goals (105) and assists (74) in program history. As a senior, she was the District 10 Player of the Year and an all-state pick after totaling 32 goals and 28 assists. She led her squad to a 22-0-3 mark and a state championship as a sophomore and was a four-time all-region selection and three-time all-region honoree. “Sarah’s high school career speaks for itself and she will add scoring punch to our attack right away,” Falor said. “She is a clinical finisher and can score in a variety of ways around the goal. I expect her to have an impact for us from day one.” Senior Taylor Miller, junior Lynsay Strahorn and sophomore Brittany Koester are the next level of forwards and will be counted on to provide a spark and energy when called upon in game situations. Miller has played in 33 games during her career with eight starts and tallied one goal and one assist. Strahorn is a speedster who scored two goals as a freshman, while Koester played in 11 contests last year, including starts in the final two games. She scored her first career goal in a win over Francis Marion. Freshmen Kaila Sargema and Taylor Stroh will add depth to the forward position as they learn the collegiate game. Sargema arrives at CSU after scoring 30 career goals and earning all-league honors twice at Canyon Country H.S. in California, while Stroh was part of an Upper Arlington H.S. squad that captured a district title her sophomore year.

HIGH SCHOOL Earned first team all-league honors as a junior and senior at Kentlake High...served as the captain of the team as a junior and senior...played for the Washington Premier Football Club, where she led her team to back-to-back semi-final appearances in the state tournament in 2008 and 2009. Derrek Falor, who has built the Cleveland State women’s soccer program from the ground up over the last decade, returns to Cleveland State for his 10th season as the head coach of the women’s soccer program with one goal in mind: continue to climb the Horizon League ledger and win the league championship. The only coach in program history, Falor has steadily built the program from winless seasons in the first two years to being one victory away from the league’s regular season title in 2010. In that time, he has coached three first team and eight second team All-Horizon League selections, six All-Ohio honorees and the 2010 Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year. Last year’s squad battled injuries from the start of the season to finish 6-11. However, a total of 17 letterwinners return from that youthful squad and combined with one of the top recruiting classes under Falor, the Vikings are poised to show improvement. The 2011 team got off to the best start in program history, winning seven of its first 10 matches. After a brief mid-season struggle, Falor’s group rebounded to go 2-0-1 over its last three matches, clinching fourth place in the Horizon League and a first round league championship match at home for the second straight season. Natalie Daniels also became the first player in school history to earn all-league honors in four consecutive seasons. The 10 wins in 2011 continued the upward trend for the Vikings. After winning no matches in either of the first two years of existance, the Vikings won three matches in 2006 and pushed the win total to five in 2007 and eight in 2008 season before winning nine in 2010 and 10 in 2011. Cleveland State has also started to build a home field advantage under Falor, as the Vikings produced a program-best 7-2-2 record at Krenzler Field in 2010. Over the last four seasons, CSU has posted an 21-17-6 mark at home. A big believer in ball control offense, Falor has steadily improved his team’s scoring while concurrently tightening up its defensive play.

After allowing 95 goals in 2004, the Vikings lowered the total to 68 in 2005, 54 in 2006, 51 in 2007, 39 during 2008, 25 in 2010 and 22 in 2011. At the other end of the field, the Vikings have gradually increased their scoring total from four in 2004 to 23 in 2007, 19 during 2008, 24 in 2010 and 25 in 2011. Shots on goal have surged from 112 in the inaugural year to almost double in 2007 with 197 and a school-record 211 in 2011. When Falor was hired in February of 2003, he was charged with developing the program from scratch. He implemented an 18-month plan that culminated in 2004 when the Vikings began the inaugural season of women’s soccer at CSU. A sports psychology major in college, Falor knew that the success of the team during the first several seasons wouldn’t be based on wins and losses, but by how well the program was set up for success in the future. Playing with a roster that has been dominated by underclassmen - CSU had just two seniors during the first three seasons - Falor knew that he needed to look to gradually improve the Viking roster over the course of the following seasons. The passion that Falor displays for coaching has been evident in the process that he has used in developing the Viking program, following a step-by-step plan to address all the necessary growth aspects of the program. After coming to CSU, Falor focused the majority of his energy on recruiting, searching northeast Ohio and the surrounding area for players that he felt fit

into his vision of the program. He accomplished just that, signing an inaugural class of 12 players in February of 2004 who he felt would be the cornerstone of the program for years to come. A two-year starter on the men’s soccer squad at Shoreline College in Seattle, Wash. (1987-88), Falor transferred to Western Washington in 1989, earning a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and sports psychology in 1992. Falor remained at Western Washington, serving as a graduate assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams for two years (1993-94) while earning his master’s in sports psychology in 1995. Falor received his first collegiate head coaching position in 1995 when he was promoted to women’s head coach at Western Washington. He compiled a 56-47-10 mark in six seasons, the second highest win total by a head coach in school history, and helped the Vikings to top-three conference finishes each year. Falor moved to DePaul in 2001 where he assisted in all facets of coaching, including recruiting, travel management, technical and tactical player development, mental skills training, and fundraising. He helped the Blue Demons turn around a struggling program, as DePaul won just three matches prior to his arrival but improved to six in 2001 and 10 in 2002. A native of Seattle, Washington, Falor married the former Camille Anne Beatty in 1992. The couple has two sons, Mason and Elliot, and reside in Lakewood.

Dallas Boyer is in his seventh season as an assistant coach of the CSU women’s soccer program, where he is responsible for overseeing the team’s technical development program and also works with the players in individual sessions to improve their playing ability. Administratively, Boyer organizes the Viking team travel and also coordinates the equipment needs of players. Boyer joined the program in January of 2007 and was able to assist the program through its spring schedule. A four-year letterman in soccer at Parma Senior High School, he earned first team all-league and all-greater Cleveland Honors as a senior. He set a school record for assists in a match (8) and graduated ranking second all-time in career assists. Following graduation, he spent two years coaching the boys soccer program at his alma mater. As an undergraduate at Miami, Boyer worked with the school’s Youth M-League, coaching in the 8-10 year old boys league for three seasons. He graduated cum laude in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in adolescent integrated social studies. Boyer returned to the Cleveland area after graduating, earning Greater Cleveland Assistant Coach of the Year honors at Parma in 2005 and helping the program earn the Greater Cleveland Division 1 Team Sportsmanship Award the following year. In the off-season, he was active as a coach in the Olympic Development Program, working as an assistant coach with the 1992 girls squad. An active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, he has a National “C” coaching certificate and his NSCAA Regional Goalkeeper Diploma. Boyer resides in Parma with his wife Kristen and their son, Casey.

Heather Clapacs, one of the top players to come through the Cleveland State program, joins the coaching staff for her first season this year. A four-year letterwinner, Clapacs was part of the inaugural CSU women’s soccer team in 2004 and went on to earn four letters as a midfielder. She finished her career with one goal, four assists and six points. Her four assists are tied for seventh on the all-time list at CSU. Clapacs’ lone goal of her career was a memorable one, scoring the game-winning goal in the eighth minute of overtime in a 2-1 opeing round win over Youngstown State in the Horizon League tournament. It was CSU’s first-ever tournament triumph. Clapacs finished her career playing in 76 matches and made 75 starts, the second most in program history. She was a second team All-Horizon League pick in 2004 and 2005 and was a member of the all-newcomer team in 2004. She earned second team All-Ohio accolades in 2006.

E r i c L a ps a n s k y V o l u n t e e r A s s i s ta n t C o a ch // 3 r d S e a s o n Eric Lapsansky, a 12-year high school coaching veteran who was tabbed as the NSCAA/OSCAA Ohio Coach of the Year in 2004, enters his third season as an assistant coach at Cleveland State. He works with the goalkeepers. Lapsansky spent the previous 12 years as the head coach of the girl’s team at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High, compiling a 142-57-26 record highlighted by a No. 23 national ranking in 2004. He led the Lady Bees to a top 10 state finish eight times and was a six-time conference coach of the year, earning Greater Cleveland Coach of the Year honors in 2004 and 2007. Lapsansky has also served as the boys team coach and goalkeeping director of the U-17 and U-18 Cleveland Whitecaps Premier Soccer Club since 2009, and his experience working with goalkeepers was what drew him to Cleveland State. Since 1998 he has been the goalkeeping director and instructor for soccer camps at the College of Wooster, and from 1998-200 he held the position of Ohio North Goalkeeping Coach at the Ohio Youth Soccer Association North Olympic Development Program. This marks the second collegiate assistant coaching stint for Lapsansky, who was an assistant coach specializing in goalkeeping at Case Western Reserve from 1998-2000. He briefly played with the Cleveland Caps of the United States Indoor Soccer League in 1996 before beginning his coaching career as an assistant at Chagrin Falls High.

C h r i s L a cs a m a n a H e a d A t h l e t i c T r a i n e r // 4 t h S e a s o n Chris Lacsamana is in his fourth year as the Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Sports Medicine at Cleveland State, overseeing the medical needs of the various CSU student-athletes while focusing on men’s basketball. Prior to arriving at CSU, Lacsamana spent eight years (2002-10) as the head athletics trainer at Alabama State University after a year as an assistant athletics trainer at ASU. He also has experience as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1998-01) and as the head trainer at Pikesville H.S. in Baltimore, Md. A certified member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association, Lacsamana earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training from Towson in 1997 and his M. Prior to arriving at CSU, Bilbrey was the owner of 3D Sport Performance LLC in Cuyahoga Falls, where he assessed, designed and implemented training for clients, while providing training and education to collegiate and high school athletes to help them reach and achieve respective goals. Bilbrey served as the Strength and Conditioning Coach at Kent State from 2008-11, working with the football, baseball, field hockey, softball and women’s soccer teams, as well as the sprinters from the track and field squad. He was also an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Eastern Michigan from 2007-08, served a two-year stint as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach at Kent State (2005-07) and a three-month internship with the Detroit Tigers. Bilbrey earned his Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Physiology from Kent State in 2003 and his Master’s of Arts in Exercise Physiology from Kent State in 2007.

Krenzler Field CSU’ s H ome S occer F ield F or M ore T han T wo D ecades Krenzler Field, the home of Viking soccer for more than two decades, reopened in 2005 after undergoing a $2.9 million renovation that transformed it from a soccer field to a year-round multi-use sports complex. The renovations consisted of two major improvements, each of which has dramatically improved the athletic physical plant for all CSU sports. The natural grass playing surface was removed in favor of a state-of-the-art FieldTurf artificial field. The second change became visible last December when a removable airsupported dome was placed over the field, creating an indoor practice facility for all sports for the winter months. The addition of FieldTurf was made necessary when women’s soccer was added at CSU, increasing the usage of the field to the point where it would be impossible to maintain the natural grass surface. FieldTurf, a revolutionary playing surface that combines the properties of natural grass with the durability of artificial turf, has been installed on almost 1,000 playing surfaces in 20 countries around the world. It is currently in use in over half of the National Football League stadiums and by almost 50 NCAA Division I institutions. It has been approved for play by FIFA, the world governing body for soccer, with some of the top professional teams around the world currently practicing and playing on it. The removable dome, a product of Yeadon Domes, covers the entire length and width of Krenzler Field, approximately 94,000 square feet, with a 60-foot ceiling. It is made of a heavy duty vinyl coated flame resistant polyester architectural fabric. The Krenzler Dome is a welcome addition, especially since the Intramural Sports Center, the only other indoor practice facility on campus, was demolished in the winter of 2005 to make way for the recently opened Student Recreation Center. The dome benefits more than just soccer.

The softball team hold preseason practices in the facility each winter with the space being large enough to set up a regulation softball field. The size of the field also makes it possible to set up an indoor driving range for the golf teams along with batting cages and pitchers mounds for softball. The renovation of Krenzler is the first step in the construction of CSU’s Varsity Village, a concentration of university athletic facilities interwoven with new residential living spaces between E. 19th and E. 24th streets along the northern edge of campus. Future plans call for the addition of an on-campus baseball field, the relocation of Viking Field, the home of CSU softball, and the reconfiguring of the Malaga Tennis Center. Built at an original cost of $1.9 million, Krenzler Field became the first university outdoor athletic venue when it was dedicated on October 17, 1985. Designed and built specifically for varsity soccer, the field is nestled at the northwest corner of the campus against a background of downtown skyscrapers. The complex includes permanent seating for 1,680 and an electric scoreboard and clock, plus a field building housing two 36-person team locker rooms, a referee locker room, a training room, a storage room and

public restroom facilities. The lighting system provides 50 footcandles of illumination. The facility is named in honor of Judge Alvin I. Krenzler, a long-time supporter of the university. Krenzler served on the CSU Board of Trustees from July 1967 until August 1970, leaving the board when he became judge of the Eighth District Court of Appeals. He retired as judge of the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio in 1992. It was Krenzler’s generous contribution - which at the time was the largest single gift ever made to CSU athletics - that made completion of the facility possible. Judge Krenzler, along with numerous soccer alumni, were in attendance when the field was rededicated before the doubleheader on October 2, 2005. On that day, the Viking women hosted Green Bay while the CSU men followed against Butler.
