In what many would call a rebuilding year, Chuck Voss led the Vikings to their 10th straight Horizon League Tournament semifinal appearance last season, holding onto Cleveland State’s title as one of the top teams in the Horizon League. Voss, who has meticulously put his stamp on the Cleveland State volleyball program throughout his 14-year tenure, was able to refocus and continue the winning tradition during the 2013 campaign, leading the Vikings to their fifth straight winning season and 11th under his guidance. Behind the efforts of Maggie Hannon and Grace Kauth - the 19th and 20th Vikings to earn postseason honors under Voss - the Vikings were able to finish the year with a 16-13 mark, including an 11-4 non-league record. During the 2013 campaign Voss was also able to achieve a personal accomplishment, notching his 250th career victory at Cleveland State on November 16. Voss now ranks second in career wins at CSU, boasting a 14-year record of 251-168. Voss is a three-time Horizon League Coach of the Year honoree, most recently earning the honor during the 2012 season after leading the Vikings to a Horizon League Regular Season and Tournament title. The 2012 season marked CSU’s second trip to the NCAA Tournament, earning a First Round contest against No. 20 Kansas. Despite the 3-1 loss to the Jayhawks, the Vikings were still able to post a program first, as they notched their first-ever NCAA Tournament set win - a 25-17 deicision in the first frame against KU. During the 2012 season the Vikings posted an overall record of 23-7, marking their fifth 20-win season under Voss. Included in their overall record was a 13-1 mark in Horizon League contests, which tied the program record for most league wins in a season. Over a five-year span from 2007 to 2011 Voss led the Vikings to a 103-51 record (.668), including Cleveland State’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament during the 2007 season. The Vikings, who finished as the regular season runner-up, earned wins over Youngstown State, Wright State and Valparaiso during the Horizon League Tournament, dropping just two sets throughout the entire tournament en route to the program’s first-ever Horizon League Tournament Title. Along with the Horizon League crown, the Vikings earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament where they had the chance to play on a national stage for the first time in program history. Despite falling to Albany in the First Round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, the Vikings made their mark as a Horizon League Championship contender and became a prominent name at the top of the league standings. The climb to be a championship contender year-in and year-out was not an easy one though. When Voss arrived in Cleveland to take over the program in 2000, the Vikings had not enjoyed a winning season in 17 years and were coming off a season in which they won just eight matches and were just 3-9 in the league. But that did not deter Voss, who guided CSU to a respectable 19-36 mark during his first two seasons at the helm. It was in 2002 that Voss really began to show what he could do on the sidelines, leading CSU to its first winning season (18-13) in 19 years. Prior to the 2007 season, Voss’ most successful run at CSU came in 2004 when he led the Vikings to the Horizon League Championship match for the first time in program history. Although the Vikings fell to Loyola in five sets, Voss’ blueprint of constructing a championship program was beginning to take form and people were starting to take note of Cleveland State volleyball. In 2005, Voss coached the Vikings to a second place finish in the Horizon League by winning a then school-record 11 league matches and leading the Vikings back to the Horizon League semifinals. Prior to his stint at Missouri, Voss served as the head coach at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa from 1995-96. While there, he improved the team’s record from 10-21 to 23-15, earning 1996 NAIA Midwest Classic Conference Coach of the Year honors. A 1994 graduate of Ohio State with a degree in physical education, Voss was a two-year starter as a setter and a captain on the men’s varsity volleyball team. He ranks sixth all-time at OSU with 2,836 assists and fifth with a career average of 13.13 assists per game. He was one of only 48 participants invited to both the 1990 and ‘91 United States Olympic Festivals. After graduation, Voss got his coaching career started by spending a year as a student assistant for the Buckeye women’s squad under head coach Jim Stone. Voss and his wife Margo have two daughters, London (14) and Laken (10), and two sons, Sterling (19) and Denver (16). The family resides in Amherst, Ohio.

CLEVELAND VIKING VOLLEYBALL STATE 2013 Season Review
2013 SEASON REVIEW 2013 SCHEDULE / RESULTS
For the fifth straight season under head coach Chuck Voss the Cleveland State volleyball team posted a winning record during 2013, finishing the year with a 16-13 mark. 2013 also marked the 11th time that CSU has reached the 15-win mark under Voss. Throughout the non-league portion of the 2013 schedule, the Vikings tallied a 10-3 record, claiming two early season tournament titles and earning eight all-tournament team honorees. The first tournament title came at CSU’s own invitational, as the Vikings claimed victories over High Point and UC Irvine en route to their second CSU Invitational title over the past five seasons. The Vikings then went 3-0 the following weekend at the Cincinnati Invitational, winning two early-season tournaments in the same season for the first time since 2010. During the four early-season tournaments, the Vikings were honored with eight alltournament team accolades - Ally Beck (CSU Invitational), Maggie Hannon (Golden Griffin Invite, Cincinnati Invitational & JMU Invitational), Grace Kauth (Cincinnati Invitational), Christina Toth (CSU Invitational, JMU Invitational), Nikki Holmes (Cincinnati Invitational) - while Beck was named the CSU Invitational MVP and Kauth was named the Cincinnati Invitational MVP. The Vikings continued this success throughout the first two weeks of Horizon League play, posting a 2-1 record during this span, but then struggled over the next four weeks winning just one match out of seven. Despite the rough league slate, the Vikings were able to close out the regular season with a pair of victories during their last four matches, clinching a spot in the six-team Horizon League Tournament. After finishing the regular season with a 5-9 record in league play, the Vikings entered the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 6 seed - continuing their streak of 14 straight tournament appearances under Voss. In the First Round of the tournament, Cleveland State earned a 3-1 victory over No. 3 seed Oakland, advancing to the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament for the 10th straight season. In the semifinals the Vikings went up against Milwaukee - the 2013 regular season champions and eventual tournament champions - falling to the Panthers 3-1 to conclude their 16-13 season. The Vikings were able to pick up a pair of postseason awards from the Horizon League, as Maggie Hannon was named to the All-League First Team and Grace Kauth was named to the All-Freshman Team. Kelly Kiger also picked up league honors, earning a spot on the AllTournament Team.

WOODLING GYMNASIUM The Cleveland State volleyball team is proud to call the Homer E. Woodling Gymnasium home. Thanks to a facelift in the summer of 2003, the refinished floor features the volleyball court as the primary markings on the middle of three basketball courts. Located within the Physical Education Building, the gym seats 1,500 for volleyball matches and upwards of 3,000 for wrestling. It boasts a suspended running track that is used year round. The volleyball locker room, a full service training room and a newly-built, fully-stocked weight room are located in the lower levels of the P.E. Building. Woodling Gym has served as the host for numerous championships, including the 2006 & 2012 NCAA Midwest Fencing Regionals, the 2000, 2008 & 2012 Horizon League Volleyball Championships, the 1999 Horizon League Women’s Basketball Championship and the 1999 & 2014 Eastern Wrestling League Championships. Recently, the Vikings have turned Woodling Gymnasium into a significant home court advantage, posting a 44-17 (.721) mark over the past five seasons and have won two CSU Invitational titles (2013 & 2010) in the process.
