2015 SEASON PREVIEW Under head coach Ali Kazemaini, Cleveland State finished the 2014 season with a 6-12-1 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the Horizon League, finishing the season with a loss in the league semifinals to eventual champion Oakland. Despite an early rough patch out west last season that saw the Vikings drop five straight games, they battled back and competed well in league play, coming within a matter of minutes from advancing to the Horizon League Championship. The 2015 team will welcome in 12 newcomers, nine of which are true freshman. Along with those 12, the Vikings will bring back 16 players that had at least one start a year ago, providing a solid mix of veteran leadership and youth off the bench to give the Vikings a promising push toward a Horizon League Championship. Here is a positional group breakdown of the 2015 Vikings.
staff a plethora of options in 2015. Both Horizon-League allnewcomer team members from a year ago will return to the middle this season, sophomores Kevin Blackwood and Alec Nagucki. Blackwood, along with Manesio, was tabbed as a “Player to Watch” and Nagucki’s versatility to play the back as well as the middle will allow him to play in a number of different lineups and formations. Senior Victor Zamora, the only member on the roster that was a part of CSU’s 2012 Horizon League Championship, will bring a wealth of leadership both on and off the field. Junior Dan Koniarczyk will also provide leadership as well as experience on the field, starting six times a year ago with two goals. Sophomore Hesham Hammouda and senior Cheo Armstrong will provide further depth in the midfield mix while talented freshmen Guilherme Vasconcelos and Luke Morais will vie for playing time as well.
FORWARD The new season will return experience along with a touch of youth to provide a serious spark on the offensive side. After a 2014 campaign that earned him second-team All-Horizon League, junior Sergio Manesio will look to further his game in 2015 to make him a perennial threat at forward. Manesio led the team in goals (5), points (11), shots (26) and shots-on-goal (12) last season and was selected as a preseason “Player to Watch” by the Horizon League for 2015. Senior Alvaro Pichardo, who scored twice a year ago, will add depth at forward with his versatility and athleticism while freshman Gianluca DiFranco, a northeast Ohio native, will also compete for a starting spot up front. Silvester Messiah should return to the pitch for the Vikings this season up front after suffering from a seasonending knee injury in the 2014 season-opener.
DEFENSE A young group last season, the defense will benefit greatly from a year of trial and error. Holding opponents to three shutouts last season, sophomore Jake Lagania, who was one of two players to appear in every game last season, will return to lead the Viking defense. Seniors Nick Kane and Mustafa Raychouni, junior James Milli and sophomore Michael Dichlian all also return to the back with 46 starts between the foursome last season. Sophomore Kareem Banton, who played up front last season, has shown the speed and quickness to stay with opposing forwards and will look to help the CSU defense.
MIDFIELD Much like the forward position, the midfield will be covered with experience as well as youthful talent, giving the coaching
GOALKEEPER The Vikings enter 2015 with a much more experienced group of goalkeepers than it did in 2014. Junior Nick Ciraldo will look to pick up where he left off in 2014, earning a spot on the Horizon League All-Tournament team. Ciraldo made 69 saves in his 1583 minutes in goal last season, starting 17 times. Junior Aleksandar Drobac returns with more experience as well, tallying five saves in three games last season as well as a start (played all 90 minutes) vs. Cincinnati.
Krenzler Field CSU’ s H ome S occer F ield F or M ore T han T wo D ecades Krenzler Field, the home of Viking soccer for more than two decades, reopened in 2005 after undergoing a $2.9 million renovation that transformed it from a soccer field to a yearround multi-use sports complex. The renovations consisted of two major improvements, each of which has dramatically improved the athletic physical plant for all CSU sports. The natural grass playing surface was removed in favor of a state-of-the-art FieldTurf artificial field. The second change became visible last December when a removable airsupported dome was placed over the field, creating an indoor practice facility for all sports for the winter months. The addition of FieldTurf was made necessary when women’s soccer was added at CSU, increasing the usage of the field to the point where it would be impossible to maintain the natural grass surface. FieldTurf, a revolutionary playing surface that combines the properties of natural grass with the durability of artificial turf, has been installed on almost 1,000 playing surfaces in 20 countries around the world. It is currently in use in over half of the National Football League stadiums and by almost 50 NCAA Division I institutions. It has been approved for play by FIFA, the world governing body for soccer, with some of the top professional teams around the world currently practicing and playing on it. The removable dome, a product of Yeadon Domes, covers the entire length and width of Krenzler Field, approximately 94,000 square feet, with a 60-foot ceiling. It is made of a heavy duty vinyl coated flame resistant polyester architectural fabric. The Krenzler Dome is a welcome addition, especially since the Intramural Sports Center, the only other indoor practice facility on campus, was demolished in the winter of 2005 to make way for the recently opened Student Recreation Center. The dome benefits more than just soccer.
The softball team hold preseason practices in the facility each winter with the space being large enough to set up a regulation softball field. The size of the field also makes it possible to set up an indoor driving range for the golf teams along with batting cages and pitchers mounds for softball. The renovation of Krenzler is the first step in the construction of CSU’s Varsity Village, a concentration of university athletic facilities interwoven with new residential living spaces between E. 19th and E. 24th streets along the northern edge of campus. Future plans call for the addition of an on-campus baseball field, the relocation of Viking Field, the home of CSU softball, and the reconfiguring of the Malaga Tennis Center. Built at an original cost of $1.9 million, Krenzler Field became the first university outdoor athletic venue when it was dedicated on October 17, 1985. Designed and built specifically for varsity soccer, the field is nestled at the northwest corner of the campus against a background of downtown skyscrapers. The complex includes permanent seating for 1,680 and an electric scoreboard and clock, plus a field building housing two 36-person team locker rooms, a referee locker room, a training room, a storage room and
public restroom facilities. The lighting system provides 50 footcandles of illumination. The facility is named in honor of Judge Alvin I. Krenzler, a long-time supporter of the university. Krenzler served on the CSU Board of Trustees from July 1967 until August 1970, leaving the board when he became judge of the Eighth District Court of Appeals. He retired as judge of the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio in 1992. It was Krenzler’s generous contribution - which at the time was the largest single gift ever made to CSU athletics - that made completion of the facility possible. Judge Krenzler, along with numerous soccer alumni, were in attendance when the field was rededicated before the doubleheader on October 2, 2005. On that day, the Viking women hosted Green Bay while the CSU men followed against Butler.
Ali Kazemaini H e a d C o a ch // T e n t h S e a s o n When Ali Kazemaini took over the Cleveland State soccer program in 2006, he inhertied a team with low expectations following a winless 2005 season. In a short period, Kazemaini has been able to turn the program around, winning at least eight games five times since taking over at CSU. Kazemaini’s best season with the Vikings came in 2012 when the team won 11 games and was able to bring home the Horizon League Tournament title, helping Cleveland State qualify for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1980. In his 23 years as a head coach Ali Kazemaini has compiled a record of 244-163-32, including 68 victories at Cleveland State in total, and a 35-19-7 record at Krenzler Field over the past seven seasons. The 2014 season saw the Vikings finish 6-12-1 overall. Kazemaini was able to take a very inexperienced group as far as they could go. After a rough patch toward the beginning of the season, the Vikings were able to compete in league play and finished with a 4-4 record in the Horizon League, good for a fourth-place seed in the tournament. In the tournament, the Vikings were able to claim two all-tournament team members after coming within seconds of reaching the championship game. They fell in double-overtime to eventual champion Oakland, 2-1. Taking over the winless CSU program beginning with the 2006 season, Kazemaini returned immediate results. Coach Kazemaini led the Vikings to the largest turnaround among all NCAA Division I programs, ending the season with a 6-10-2 record. During the 2007 season, the Vikings finished with a record of 3-7-2 in matches decided by one goal or less, indicating they were better than their 3-12-3 overall record. In 2008, the Vikings turned the corner, finishing with a league mark of 8-3-1 and The Kazemaini Coaching File flexed their muscle at home, going 7-3-1 at Krenzler Field. The strong season finished with an appearance in the Horizon League Championship match, the first since 2002. At John Carroll (1992-2005) Kazemaini came back to Cleveland State after 14 successful seasons as head coach Year W L T at John Carroll University. Kazemaini took over at JCU in 1992 and the Blue Streaks immediately benefited, 1992 15 2 1 going 15-2-1 and winning the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship in his first 1993 17 3 0 season. Harwat was a big help to the Cleveland State program in 2012, as the Vikings went 11-6-3 on the year, while also taking home the Horizon League tournament title. With the league crown, the Vikings qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1980. Prior to arriving at CSU, Harwat spent two years as an assistant coach at Richmond. In 2002, Harwat was named the MAC Newcomer of the Year, as well as first team All-MAC and all-region after leading the team with nine goals and 22 points. A year later, Harwat earned first team all-league and all-region honors after tallying 23 points on nine goals and five assists, helping the Zips to the third round of the NCAA Championship.
