BRIAN ETZKIN
HEAD COACH | 15TH SEASON
One of the most decorated coaches in Cleveland State history, Brian Etzkin will begin his 15th year at the helm of the men’s tennis team, looking to continue the program’s success during the 2016-17 season. Etzkin became the head coach at CSU prior to the 2002-03 season, taking over a men’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. The change came almost overnight, as the Vikings won nine matches during Etzkin’s first year, six more than the previous two years combined. In his time thus far, Etzkin has built a men’s program that is one of the most consistent in the league, earning a spot in the Horizon League Tournament every year during his tenure. Under Etzkin’s guidance the Vikings have been crowned Horizon League Champions five times, claiming the title during the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013 seasons. In 2009 the men’s tennis team became the third Cleveland State program to win back-to-back league titles, and in 2010 became the first program in school history to win three-straight. The 2007-08 season marked the first time in program history that CSU earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament, and the Vikings have returned four times since then (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013). Under Etzkin, CSU owns a post-season record of 21-13, which includes Horizon League and NCAA tournament appearances. The winningest coach in program history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone last season, recording his 200th career victory with the men’s program in a 5-2 victory over Butler on February 26, 2016. Etzkin, who is one of just two Horizon League coaches to reach the 200-win milestone, enters the upcoming season with an overall record of 207-142 at the helm of the Vikings. Thanks to his accolades, Etzkin has been named Horizon League Coach of the Year three times, earning the honor following the 2007, 2009 and 2010 seasons. In addition, he was named the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Men’s Coach of the Year. Etzkin has mentored eight all-league first team honorees, including four-time nominee Phil Orno (2007, 08, 09, 10) who was also named the Player of the Year as a sophomore. Two Vikings have earned Newcomer of the Year honors under Etzkin; Matt Kuelker following the 2010-11 season and former assistant coach Jay Tee who won the award in 2003. Cleveland State is just as impressive off the court, as 15 Vikings have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes since the 2002-03 season, and the men’s team has received ITA All-Academic honors twice (2009 & 2007). Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsmanship honor; Rob Fox (2011), Steven Wipprecht (2009) and Brad Groleski (2006). Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Under Etzkin, four members of the men’s tennis team have been named officers for the Cleveland State Student-Athlete Advisory Council; Steven Wipprecht (2008-09) and Jay Tee (2005-06) each served as the SAAC President during their careers, while Brad Groleski (2006-07) and Nolan Marks (2014-15) served as the Vice Presidents. Etzkin was born in Cleveland and raised in Wooster, but returned to Northeast Ohio after working as an assistant men’s tennis coach at Michigan State. While with the Spartans, he assisted in every aspect of the program, including serving as recruiting coordinator. ETZKIN COACHING HIGHLIGHTS

Polito is in his second stint with the Vikings, as he was also an assistant coach from September 2012 through February 2014. Over the last two years, Polito has helped mentor three Vikings to All-League honors, while Cleveland State has earned an appearance in the Horizon League semifinals during both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. During Polito’s first stint at Cleveland State, the Vikings captured their fifth Horizon League title during the 2013 season and had three players earn All-League honors. During Polito’s six-month hiatus from Cleveland State (February 2014-July 2014), he served as the head boys and girls coach at Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio. Polito joined the Cleveland State coaching staff during the 2012-13 season after a six-year stint as an assistant coach with the women’s tennis team at Georgia. During his tenure, the Bulldogs posted an overall record of 139-29, won two regular season SEC championships, claimed three SEC tournament titles and advanced past the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament three times. CLEVELAND VIKING STATE TENNIS MEL BADZIONG 2015-16 Season Review
2015-16 SEASON REVIEW JOE VANMETER CONCLUDES STRONG VIKING CAREER Joe VanMeter finished his Cleveland State career as one of the top singles players in program history, finishing his time as a Viking ranked sixth on the Cleveland State singles wins list with 73 victories. VanMeter, who tallied a pair of 20-win seasons at Cleveland State, is one of just seven Vikings all-time to notch 70 career victories and the first to reach the milestone since 2014. JOE VANMETER & MIRKO RADOSEVIC NAMED ALL-LEAGUE SECOND TEAM Following the 2015-16 season senior Joe VanMeter and sophomore Mirko Radosevic were named to the All-Horizon League Second Team – VanMeter picking up his second all-league honor and Radosevic earning his first. VanMeter and Radosevic split time throughout the top of the singles lineup for the Vikings during the spring season, combining for 23 of Cleveland State’s 36 wins at the top three spots. The Vikings have now had at least two representatives on all-league teams every year under head coach Brian Etzkin. BENJAMIN SLADE NOTCHES 20-WIN SEASON Freshman Benjamin Slade had an excellent performance during his rookie campaign, finishing the 2015-16 season with a team-best 21-14 record. Slade, who was the only Viking to reach the 20-win mark during the season, became the 11th Viking all-time to record a 20-win season and the sixth to do so during their rookie campaign. BRIAN ETZKIN NOTCHES 200TH CAREER VICTORY Fourteen-year head coach Brian Etzkin recorded a coaching milestone during the 2015-16 season, as he notched his 200th career victory at the helm of the Vikings on February 26. Etzkin, who is the all-time winningest coach in program history, finished the 2015-16 season with a 207-141 record with the Vikings. He is now one of just two active Horizon League coaches to reach the 200-win milestone. MEDICAL MUTUAL TENNIS PAVILION One of the biggest highlights of the 2015-16 season was the completion of the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion – Cleveland State’s new on-campus indoor facility. The MMTP, which held its first match on March 9, is a six-court indoor facility that makes Cleveland State the first and only league school with an on-campus indoor facility.

MEDICAL MUTUAL TENNIS PAVILION
Opened: March 9, 2016 After years of planning, the Cleveland State tennis program opened a new on-campus facility during the Spring of 2016, replacing the former Malaga Tennis Center with the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. The MMTP, which officially opened on March 9, 2016, features six indoor temperature-controlled courts, a six-court wirelessly controlled scoreboard, restrooms, and storage areas. With the opening of the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, Cleveland State became the first Horizon League tennis program to have an on-campus indoor facility.
