2015-16 // FRESHMAN SEASON Named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Horizon League First Team…joined the Vikings in January and competed during the spring season…finished the spring with a 12-10 singles record, playing at the top of the lineup for the final six weeks of the year…went 6-3 against Horizon League opponents…named the Horizon League Player of the Week (March 29) after going 2-0 at the top of the singles lineup and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles – leading the Vikings to a pair of wins against Wright State and Northern Kentucky…also went 11-8 in doubles play, including a 6-2 record against league opponents at No. 1 doubles with Aleksandra Golawska. HIGH SCHOOL Posted a 75-6 record during her high school campaign at Clarkston High School…three-time state tournament qualifier, finishing second as a freshman and third as a sophomore…three-time league and regional individual champion…named the Best Athlete at Clarkston High School…tabbed Best Tennis Player in Oakland County…awarded the Hoxie Memorial Award from the USTA as a junior. HEAD COACH | 15TH SEASON
Over the past 14 seasons Brian Etzkin has turned the Cleveland State women’s tennis program into one of the top teams in the Horizon League – with the Vikings capturing two Horizon League Regular Season titles over the last three seasons. Etzkin has guided the Vikings to 11 winning seasons during his tenure, and will be striving for the same level of excellence during the 2016-17 season. Etzkin became the head coach at CSU prior the 2002-03 season, taking over a women’s program that was in dire need of rebuilding. And the change came quickly, as the Vikings won 10 matches during Etzkin’s second year and have finished .500 or better in 11 of his 14 seasons. The winningest coach in school history, Etzkin reached an impressive milestone last season, recording his 175th career victory with the women’s program. Entering the 2016-17 season, Etzkin has an overall record of 186-175 at the helm of the Vikings. Etzkin’s success on the court has translated into an array of Horizon League accolades, including four Horizon League Coach of the Year awards (2004, 2011, 2014, 2016). He has mentored 18 All-League honorees, two Horizon League Players of the Year (Sarah Galon – 2005 and Lauren Golick – 2014), and three Horizon League Newcomers of the Year (Sarah Galon – 2004, Lauren Golick – 2014 and Isabella Spindler – 2016). During Etzkin’s tenure, two Vikings have earned First Team honors every year of their career - Sarah Galon (2004, `05, `06, `07) and Catrine Bjerrehus (2009, ‘10, ‘11, ‘12). The Vikings are just as impressive off the court, as Victoria Bensimon, Morgan Nix, Katy Quillin, and Jana Schober were named ITA Scholar-Athletes last year. The women’s team has also received ITA All-Academic Team honors 10 times under Etzkin, including last season when they posted a team grade point average of 3.39 for the 2015-16 academic year. Three Vikings have also been awarded the Horizon League Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award, including Sarah Galon who was a twotime recipient (2006, 2007). Charlotte Gibbons (2010) and Morgan Ungerott (2008) also earned the accolade during their time at CSU. Etzkin has also encouraged his players to become community leaders. Over the past 11 years five members of the women’s tennis team have been involved with the Cleveland State StudentAthlete Advisory Council, including Victoria Bensimon and Princess Gbadamosi who served as SAAC Chairs during the 2015-16 academic year. Etzkin was born in Cleveland and raised in Wooster, but returned to Northeast Ohio after working as an assistant men’s tennis coach at Michigan State. While with the Spartans, he assisted in every aspect of the program, including serving as recruiting coordinator. ETZKIN COACHING HIGHLIGHTS

BRIAN ETZKIN
FRANK POLITO
ASSOC. HEAD COACH | 5TH SEASON Frank Polito will begin his third year as the Cleveland State men’s and women’s tennis associate head coach during the 2016-17 season, and his fifth year overall with the Viking tennis program. Polito is in his second stint with the Vikings, as he was also an assistant coach from September 2012 through February 2014. Last season, Polito was instrumental in guiding the Vikings to the 2016 Horizon League Regular Season title, as Cleveland State went 8-1 in league play en route to its second regular season crown in program history. Polito mentored newcomer Isabella Spindler throughout the season, who was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-League First Team. During Polito’s first three seasons with the Vikings, he helped guide Cleveland State to three semifinal appearances and one championship appearance at the Horizon League Tournament, while mentoring seven All-League honorees. During Polito’s six-month hiatus from Cleveland State (February 2014-July 2014), he served as the head boys and girls coach at Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio. Polito joined the Cleveland State coaching staff during the 2012-13 season after a six-year stint as an assistant coach with the women’s tennis team at Georgia. During his tenure, the Bulldogs posted an overall record of 139-29, won two regular season SEC championships, claimed three SEC tournament titles and advanced past the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament three times. Georgia also finished the year ranked in the ITA top-10 five out of his six years. For his efforts with the Bulldogs, Polito was named the 2008 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Assistant Coach of the Year, and promoted to associate head coach in September of 2010. Prior to his time in Athens, Polito spent two years as an assistant coach at Kansas (2004-06) and two years in the same position at Ohio State (2001-03). With the Jayhawks, Polito’s coaching and recruiting efforts helped make dramatic improvements on and off the court, culminating with ITA All-Academic Team honors and an ITA No. 59 ranking following the 2006 season. At Ohio State, Polito led the Buckeyes to a combined record of 31-19 and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. In 2002, he was honored as the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Polito also served as the head coach at Louisiana-Monroe (1999-2001), head coach at Akron (1997-99), assistant coach and interim head coach at Kansas (1996-97), head coach at Sienna Heights (1995) and head coach at Eastern Michigan (1990-95). Polito is a 1990 graduate of Eastern Michigan, where he was a four-year letterwinner for the Eagles, and team captain during his senior year. The Lorain, Ohio native earned a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and film from EMU.

CLEVELAND VIKING STATE TENNIS MEL BADZIONG 2015-16 Season Review
2015-16 SEASON REVIEW REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS! After posting a program-best 8-1 record against Horizon League opponents throughout the spring, the Vikings captured the 2016 Horizon League Regular Season Title. This marked the second regular season crown in program history (2014), and the second over the last three seasons. ISABELLA SPINDLER NAMED HL FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR After joining the Vikings in January, Isabella Spindler quickly worked her way up the lineup, finishing the season at the top of the singles and doubles lineup – the only freshman in the league to do so. Spindler posted a 12-10 singles record during the spring season and notched an 11-8 doubles record, leading the Vikings to the Regular Season crown and earning the honor of Horizon League Freshman of the Year. Spindler is the fourth Viking to earn Freshman of the Year accolades and the third to do so under head coach Brian Etzkin. BRIAN ETZKIN NAMED HL COACH OF THE YEAR After leading the Vikings to the 2016 Horizon League Regular Season title, Brian Etzkin was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year – picking up the accolade for the fourth time in his career. Etzkin, who is the all-time winningest coach in program history, led the Vikings to a 14-9 overall record during 2015-16, marking the 11th winning season during his 14-year tenure. TRIO OF VIKINGS REACH 50-WIN MILESTONE Over the course of the 2015-16 season three Vikings earned a spot in the 50-win club, as Mathilde Orange, Victoria Bensimon and Princess Gbadamosi all eclipsed the 50-win plateau. The trio marked the 12th, 13th, and 14th Vikings, respectively, to achieve the feat and the first to do so since the 2013-14 season. Orange finished her career with 54 career singles wins, while Bensimon finished her junior season with 54 singles wins and Gbadamosi wrapped up her junior year with 51 victories. VICTORIA BENSIMON POSTS PERFECT RECORD IN HL SINGLES PLAY For the first time since 2012, the Vikings had a player post a perfect Horizon League singles record, as junior Victoria Bensimon went 9-0 against league opponents during the 2015-16 spring season. Bensimon, who has posted a 21-2 career record against league opponents, played throughout the middle of the lineup during the spring season and finished the year on a 12-match win streak. MEDICAL MUTUAL TENNIS PAVILION One of the biggest highlights of the 2015-16 season was the completion of the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion – Cleveland State’s new on-campus indoor facility. The MMTP, which held its first match on March 9, is a six-court indoor facility that makes Cleveland State the first and only league school with an on-campus indoor facility. The Vikings finished the spring season with a 7-1 record in the MMTP, making it a major home-court advantage for the Vikings.

2014 HORIZON LEAGUE REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS During the 2014 season, the Vikings captured their first-ever Horizon League Regular Season title, finishing the season with a 7-1 league record and earning the No. 1 seed in the Horizon League Tournament for the first time in program history. Cleveland State’s seven league victories tied for a program-high - and included CSU’s first-ever victory over perennial powerhouse UIC.

2016 HORIZON LEAGUE REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS During the 2016 season, the Vikings captured their second Horizon League Regular Season title, finishing the year with an 8-1 league record. With the regular season title, Cleveland State earned the No. 1 seed in the Horizon League Tournament for the second time in program history. Cleveland State’s eight league victories also set a program-record, and included a perfect 4-0 record in road matches.

MEDICAL MUTUAL TENNIS PAVILION
Opened: March 9, 2016 After years of planning, the Cleveland State tennis program opened a new on-campus facility during the Spring of 2016, replacing the former Malaga Tennis Center with the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. The MMTP, which officially opened on March 9, 2016, features six indoor temperature-controlled courts, a six-court wirelessly controlled scoreboard, restrooms, and storage areas. With the opening of the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, Cleveland State became the first Horizon League tennis program to have an on-campus indoor facility.
