Cleveland State will host Horizon League opponent Green Bay in its lone contest this week, facing the Phoenix at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7. The Vikings enter the week with a 7-9 overall record and a 1-1 mark in league play after falling to Youngstown State (4-3) last weekend. Last weekend’s loss to YSU snapped a 26-match regular season Horizon League win streak for the Vikings, and marked the first time in four seasons that CSU has lost to a league opponent. Prior to the contest with Youngstown State, CSU defeated Western Michigan, 4-3, with singles wins from Matt Kuelker, Jorg van der Vloet and Matt Ford. Ford has a team-high singles record of 11-5 this spring, while Nolan Marks stands at 8-7 and Kuelker at 7-9.
SOFTBALL After 34 games away from the friendly confines of Viking Field - either at a road or neutral site Cleveland State will finally play at home this week, starting with Wednesday’s (April 4) doubleheader against Niagara that begins at 3:00 p.m. CSU also hosts Wright State for a three game Horizon League series on Friday and Saturday (April 6-7). The Vikings went 0-5 this past week despite a couple of standout individual performances. Junior first baseman Dara Toman belted five home runs in five games - including a pair of multihome run outings - while hitting at a .467 (7-15) clip. Sara Shields hit .400 (6-15) during the week and had a hit in each game to extend her hitting streak to a team-best nine games.
Nicole Janek
Women’s Tennis Hosts Two Matches This Weekend The Vikings will continue Horizon League play this weekend, as they are set to host Green Bay and Milwaukee. CSU will face the Phoenix at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (April 6) and will then meet the Panthers at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday (April 7). Entering the weekend CSU has a 10-7 overall record and a 2-0 mark in league play, making the Vikings one of three undefeated teams in the league standings. Last week Cleveland State posted a 5-2 victory over Youngstown State, marking CSU’s sixth straight victory over the Penguins. CSU got singles wins from Kara Sherwood (No. 3), Nicole Janek (No. 4), Alex Power (No. 5) and Mengdi Liu (No. 6) against YSU, marking the ninth time this season that the Vikings have won at least four singles matches in a contest. Janek leads CSU with a 13-4 singles record this spring, while Power is close behind with a 10-7 mark. Overall this year, Power has a record of 19-11, just one win shy of her first 20-win season, while Janek stands at 18-10.
The Vikings will get a much deserved break from their hectic spring schedule and will be out of action until April 13-14 when CSU competes in the Detroit Titan Invitational. CSU competed in the Butler Spring Invitational last week at the par-72, 6,960-yard Prestwick C.C., finishing third of 10 teams with rounds of 300-306. The second round 306 was the second lowest final round in the field. Andrew Bailey and Michael Klaric tied for sixth place with 36 hole totals of 148.
