The Vikings return to action at the Horizon League Championship from Friday through Sunday (April 27-29) at the Mission Inn Resort in Howeyon-the-Hills, Fla. CSU won last year’s league title behind comedalists Andrew Bailey and Michael Klaric and has won three of the last four league championships. The Vikings tied for fourth place of 15 teams at the Ball State EY Invitational over the weekend (April 21-22) in a tournament where six players played and the low five counted. However, CSU played with just five players. Michael Balcar shot three straight rounds of 73 to finish ninth overall with a season-low 54-hole total of 219. Jon Riemer was one shot back in 10th place at 220.
WOMEN’S GOLF Cleveland State returns to action this weekend when the Vikings compete in the Horizon League Championship from Friday through Sunday (April 27-29) in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., at the Mission Inn Resort. The Vikings were fourth of seven teams at last year’s event. Cleveland State concluded its regular season two weeks ago, placing 10th of 12 teams at the Dolores Black Bowling Green Falcon Invitational. CSU shot rounds of 332 and 344 and were led by junior Ariel Sparrow who carded rounds of 82-80 (162) to finish tied for 19th place. She was joined in 19th place by freshman Colleen Miller who was playing as an individual and fired rounds of 80-82.

Men’s Tennis After Fifth Straight Title For the first time in five years the Vikings will have to make it to the Horizon League Championship match the hard way, playing No. 5 seed Detroit in a first round match after claiming the No. 4 seed in this year’s tournament. First round action begins at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 27 at North Central High School in Indianapolis, Ind. A win would send the Vikings into Saturday’s semifinals with the championship match on Sunday. Cleveland State ended the regular season with a 1-1 weekend, defeating Butler (5-2) and falling to Wright State (4-3). Matt Ford and Ali Shabib each went 2-0 in singles play last weekend, Shabib at No. 4 singles and Ford at the No. 6 spot. With his two wins last weekend, Ford became the sixth Viking to post a perfect 7-0 mark in league play over the past five seasons. Overall this year, Ford leads the Vikings with a 19-14 singles record, while Nolan Marks stands at 17-15 and Matt Kuelker stands at 15-16. The No. 3 doubles team of Kuelker and Jorg van der Vloet has a team-best 14-13 mark, while Shabib and Marks own a 10-8 record at No. 1 doubles.
For the second straight season Cleveland State enters the Horizon League Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will face either No. 3 Milwaukee or No. 6 Detroit in the semifinals at at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 at North Central H.S. in Indianapolis, Ind. The championship match would be on Sunday. The Vikings finished the regular season with a pair of victories against Butler and Wright State last weekend, ending the year with a 7-1 mark in league action, tying the school record for league victories in a year. CSU had five players post 2-0 records in singles action last weekend, led by senior Catrine Bjerrehus who picked up wins at No. 1 singles. Kara Sherwood (No. 3), Nicole Janek (No. 4), Alex Bush (No. 5) and Alex Power (No. 6) were also perfect in singles action, with Power ending the year undefeated in league matches with an 8-0 mark.
SOFTBALL Cleveland State begins a nine-game homestand to close the regular season with three games against Butler, playing a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Vikings were 0-4 on their road trip last week, but lost three games by one run, including Thursday’s (April 19) 6-5 setback at Notre Dame. CSU was swept by Green Bay over the weekend (April 21-22), losing the three games by a combined six runs. Sara Shields sparked the offense last week, hitting .500 (7-14) with her fifth home run of the season while driving in three runs and scoring three of her own in the four-game span. Caila Ferro, who has battled nagging injuries all season long, was 5-for-13 (.385) last week and hit her second home run of the season during the

Catrine Bjerrehus finished her regular season career in a Viking uniform in fine fashion, posting a 2-0 mark in singles play and a 2-0 record in doubles action over the final weekend of regular season play. Bjerrehus, who ranks fourth all-time at CSU with 61 career singles wins, picked up a 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 win against Butler and a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Wright State. On the year, Bjerrehus has a 15-20 mark in singles action, including a 5-3 mark throughout Horizon League play. She has played primarily at No. 1 singles for CSU, while also playing most of her time at the No. 1 doubles spot with teammate Maria Lazaris.
