MEN’S GOLF The Vikings closed their

season over the weekend in Florida, finishing as the runner-up at the Horizon League Championship as four players finished in the top-10. CSU shot rounds of 300292-296 (888) to finish fourshots behind team champion Valparaiso. Andrew Bailey, the Horizon League Player of the Year for the second straight season, was the individual runner-up, carding a 54-hole total of 218 (70-72-76). His 72.8 scoring average was the second lowest in program history. First team all-league pick Michael Balcar tied for third place at 222 (75-71-76) and joined Bailey on the all-tournament team. Senior Jon Riemer tied for eighth place with rounds of 77-75-72 (224), while junior Brendan Byrne also shot 224 (78-74-72) to tie for eighth place.

WOMEN’S GOLF CSU’s season came to a

close with a third place showing at the Horizon League Championship in Florida over the weekend. CSU shot an opening round 312 to share the first round lead with Detroit and added rounds of 319 and 315 to finish behind Detroit and Youngstown State. Senior Ariel Sparrow carded rounds of 80-75-78 (236) to finish tied for sixth and earn a spot on the all-tournament team. She closed her career with a CSU record 81.2 scoring average. Freshman Allyson Hackman joined Sparrow on the all-tournament team, tying for sixth place at 236, which included a first round 73, tied for the second lowest round in program history (73-82-78). As a team, the Vikings set the school record for lowest scoring average at 320.0, which also included the lowest round in program history (305).

MEN’S TENNIS With a 4-3 victory over top-

seeded Green Bay last Sunday, the Vikings claimed their fifth Horizon League Championship in the past six seasons. CSU, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, earned a 4-3 victory over Detroit in the semifinals and upset the reigning Horizon League Champions in the final match. The Vikings will find out who they will face in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday (April 30), as the NCAA Selection Show is slated for 5:00 p.m. First and second round action will take place May 10 through May 12. Jorg van der Vloet was named to the All-Horizon League First Team, while Matt Kuelker and Ali Shabib picked up second team honors. Niklas Jonsson clinched the title with his three-set win at No. 4 singles against Green Bay.

WOMEN’S TENNIS CSU’s season came to an

end last weekend, falling in the semifinals of the Horizon League Championship. The third-seeded Vikings posted a 4-0 victory over Wright State in the first round, and then fell to second-seeded Youngstown State, 4-2 in the semifinals. This was the fourth straight year that the Vikings advanced to the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament. Three Vikings picked up postseason awards over the weekend, as Mathilde Orange, Alex Bush and Alex Power were named to the All-Horizon League Second Team. Nicole Janek and Maria Lazaris finished the spring with a team-high 15 wins, while Kara Sherwood ended the year with a 13-7 singles mark. Cleveland State finished the season with a 13-11 record, including a 5-2 league mark and a 6-1 record at home.

SOFTBALL The Vikings play seven

games this week, five on the road and two at home. CSU will first play two midweek doubleheaders, Tuesday at Kent State at 3:00 p.m., followed by a home Thursday contest at 5:00 p.m. vs. Robert Morris. They will then close the regular season on the road with a three game series at UIC Saturday and Sunday. CSU split a pair of doubleheaders last week, putting their season record at 18-22 and 9-7 in the Horizon League. Senior Dara Toman had the highlight of the week, as a three-run home run vs. Green Bay Monday helped her to rewrite both the Cleveland State and Horizon League record books. With the homer she Horizon League and CSU home run record (she now has 55) and the CSU runs scored record (she now has 132).

Jonsson led the Vikings throughout the Horizon League Tournament, posting a 2-0 doubles record and a 2-0 singles mark – including the clinching point against Green Bay in the Championship match. At No. 4 singles, Jonsson earned a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Detroit in the semifinals and then battled for a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win against Green Bay in the finals. Jonsson also teamed up with Ali Shabib to form CSU’s No. 1 doubles team – taking down Detroit, 8-2 and Green Bay, 8-4 during the tournament.
