Cleveland State finished third of eight teams at the Horizon League Championship over the weekend, carding a 54-hole total of 915 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Vikings shot rounds of 304-308-303, finishing six shots behind league champion Loyola (909) and two behind runner-up Green Bay (911). Jon Riemer placed fifth to earn a spot on the all-tournament team, carding a 54-hole total of 225 (74-76-75). Andrew Bailey (76-77-76) and Michael Balcar (77-78-74) tied for 14th place at 229, while Brendan Byrne tied for 29th place at 237 (79-80-78) and Michael Klaric tied for 32nd at 239 (77-77-85). Bailey was named the league Player of the Year and was joined on the all-league team by Klaric. Bailey’s scoring average of 73.8 was the third lowest in program history.
WOMEN’S GOLF The Vikings finished fourth of eight teams at the Horizon League Championship which was played from Friday through Sunday at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. CSU carded rounds of 344-336-335 to finish with a 54-hole total of 1,015. Butler won the event at 984 and was followed by co-runner-ups Detroit and Loyola which finished at 1,009. Madeline Kaminski and Ariel Sparrow paced the Vikings as the duo tied for ninth place at 253. Kaminski shot 87-84-82, while Sparrow fired rounds of 83-86-84. Colleen Miller was 14th at 254 (86-81-87), while Lisa Barber was one shot back, tied for 15th place (88-85-82 - 255). Shelly Ford had three straight 89’s and was 31st at 267.

Vi k i n g s F i n i s h A s L e a g u e R u n n e rU p F o r S e c o n d S t ra i g h t S e a s o n For the second straight season, the women’s tennis squad finished as the Horizon League runner-up, falling in the league championship match to UIC, 4-0, on Sunday. Seeded second, the Vikings opened play with a 4-0 sweep over Detroit in the semifinals on Friday. The league championship was played in Indianapolis, Ind. Prior to the start of the tournament, senior Catrine Bjerrehus and junior Maria Lazaris were honored as All-Horizon League selections. Bjerrehus was named to the first team for the fourth straight season, while Lazaris was tabbed a second team pick for the second straight season. Bjerrehus won 16 matches as CSU’s top player, while Lazaris also won 16 matches, playing predominantly at No. 2 singles. Together, the duo formed CSU’s top doubles team, combining for 11 wins, including a 5-1 mark in league play.
The Vikings came up just short of its fifth straight Horizon League title, falling in the championship match to Green Bay, 4-1, on Sunday. The fourth-seeded Vikings had advanced to the title match with a 4-3 win over Detroit in the first round and a 4-0 win over top-seeded Wright State in the semifinals. The tournament was played in Indianapolis, Ind. Prior to the tournament, senior Yannick Goossens and sophomore Matt Kuelker were honored on the all-league team. Goossens, CSU’s No. 1 singles player, was named to the first team for the third straight season, finishing the 2011-12 campaign with 16 victories. Kuelker was honored as a second team pick for the second consecutive season after winning 16 matches at No. 2 singles.
SOFTBALL CSU concludes the regular season with six games at home this week, starting with a three-game series against Detroit on Tuesday and Wednesday. The teams will play a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday and one game at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Vikings then host Valparaiso for a single game on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The Vikings took one of three from visiting Butler over the weekend, winning the series opener on a 7-5 count on Saturday (April 28) before dropping both games on Sunday (April 29). Megan Bashak hit a two-run homer and went the distance in the circle while striking out a career-high 10 in the opener. Alicia Nichols (4-10) and Dara Toman (2-5) both hit at a .400 clip in the series.

He carded rounds of 74-76-75 to finish with a 54-hole total of 225, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. He finished just three shots behind the individual medalist and helped the Vikings place third at the league tournament.
