MEN’S GOLF The Vikings return to action
WOMEN’S GOLF CSU continues its spring
on Friday and Saturday (April 12-13) when CSU competes in the Detroit Titan Invitational. CSU was last in action on Monday and Tuesday (March 25-26), finishing 13th of 16 teams at the prestigious Memphis Intercollegiate. The event featured four teams ranked in the top-50 in the nation and several others in the top-100. The Vikings carded rounds of 313-319-311 (943) as the first day of the event was played in adverse weather conditions, including wet, windy, rainy and snowy weather. Andrew Bailey was CSU’s top finisher, tying for 29th place with rounds of 77-80-74 (231). Jon Riemer and Brendan Bryne tied for 54th place at 237.

The Vikings were in action over the weekend, finishing 12th of 14 teams at the Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky. It was CSU’s first event in three weeks after weather forced the cancelation of on other event on the schedule. CSU carded rounds of 325312-324 with the second round 312 tying for the lowest round in program history. Freshman Allyson Hackman was CSU’s top finisher, tying for 38th place at 238 (7979-80). Senior Lisa Barber shot a second round 76, the lowest round by a CSU player in the tournament and also tying her career low round.
MEN’S TENNIS Cleveland State (6-11, 2-1
HL) returns home this weekend, hosting UIC and Valparaiso in its final homestand of the season. The Vikings will face UIC on Saturday (April 13) and Valparaiso on Sunday (April 14), with both contests slated for a 3:00 p.m. start. CSU dropped a pair of tough road contests last weekend, falling at Marquette (4-3) in a non-league matchup and at Green Bay (5-2). Ali Shabib, Nolan Marks, Matt Ford and Joe VanMeter each picked up singles wins over the weekend, while Marks also went 2-0 in doubles play with Matt Kuelker. Ford, Kuelker, Shabib, VanMeter and Jorg van der Vloet have all reached double-digit singles wins this year, while the doubles team of Shabib and Niklas Jonsson became the sixth Viking duo in program history to record 20 wins in a season with an 8-6 win at Green Bay.
WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings (9-9, 3-1 HL)
will continue Horizon League play at home this weekend, hosting UIC and Valparaiso in a pair of crucial matchups. CSU will face UIC on Saturday (April 13) and Valparaiso on Sunday (April 14), with both matches set for an 11:00 a.m. start. Last weekend, the Vikings picked up victories at Milwaukee (4-3) and Green Bay (7-0). The victory over the Phoenix marked CSU’s first sweep of the season, and its fifth sweep of Green Bay in the past 10 seasons. Alex Bush, Kara Sherwood, Maria Lazaris and Nicole Janek all went 2-0 in singles action last weekend, while Janek also picked up two doubles wins. Sherwood now has a teambest 15-11 record this year, while Sherwood, Janek and Lazaris all have 10 singles wins on the spring. Lazaris ranks fourth all-time at CSU with 66 victories, while Janek ranks fifth with 65 wins.
SOFTBALL CSU (10-13, 1-2) has a bust
week ahead with seven games, beginning with a doubleheader at Viking Field against Akron on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. The Vikings then head to St. Francis (Pa.) for a 3:00 p.m. twinbill on Thursday before a three-game league series at Youngstown State with two games on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CSU’s three-game series at Green Bay over the weekend was canceled due to poor field conditions. The Vikings have not played since going 1-2 at Wright State on March 29-30. CSU won the opener, 2-1, before dropping both games of Saturday’s doubleheader. Freshman Susan Knight pitched a complete game to earn the win in the opener, giving up just four hits and an unearned run, while striking out three.

Last Week Janek went 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles play last weekend, leading the Vikings to a pair of Horizon League victories at Milwaukee and Green Bay. Janek, who owns a perfect 4-0 mark in league play, earned her victories at No. 6 singles against Milwaukee and No. 5 singles against Green Bay. She has an 11-6 singles mark this season, and ranks fifth all-time at CSU with 65 career wins. Janek also owns a perfect 4-0 doubles record in league play with Mathilde Orange this season, following a pair of victories at the No. 3 spot at UWM and Green Bay.
