WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cleveland State will hit the road this weekend, traveling to UIC and Valparaiso for a pair of 2:00 p.m. contests. The Vikings will face the Flames on Saturday, April 14 and the Crusaders on Sunday, April 15. For the first time in seven seasons the Vikings will be trying to rebound from back-to-back Horizon League losses, after falling to league-leading Green Bay, 5-2 last weekend. Matt Ford and Nolan Marks picked up the two wins against the Phoenix, notching victories at No. 5 and 6 singles. On the season, Ford leads the Vikings with a 15-14 singles record and has now won four straight matches. Ford is also the only Viking to hold a perfect singles record in league play (3-0). Marks is close behind with a 14-14 record and enters the week on a two-match win streak.

MEN’S GOLF After being out of action for almost three weeks, Cleveland State returns to competition this weekend when the Vikings compete in the 54 hole Detroit Titan Invitational on Friday and Saturday (April 13-14). The event will be played at Prestwick Village G.C. in Highland, Mich. CSU was last in action at the Butler Spring Invitational on March 27-28, placing third of 10 teams with rounds of 300-306 (606). Andrew Bailey carded back-to-back rounds of 74 (148 total) to tie for sixth place overall. Michael Klaric joined Bailey in sixth place with rounds of 73-75.

Softball Has Busy Week Ahead Cleveland State continues its homestand with doubleheaders against Kent State on Tuesday (April 10) and St. Francis (Pa.) on Thursday (April 12). Both contests start at 3:00 p.m. The Vikings then hit the road for three games at Loyola, playing a twinbill at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (April 14) and a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (April 15). The Vikings split their four games last week, starting the week with a non-league loss to Niagara and dropping the first game to Wright State on Friday (April 6) before sweeping Saturday’s (April 7) doubleheader to take the series. Sophomore standout Sara Shields was the winning pitcher in both victories and got help from battery mate Salena Kauffman who blasted the first two home runs of her career in the 6-2 win in game two. The first shot was a grand slam to left field and she later belted a solo homer to right field to account for the first two extra base hits of her career. Shields, who went the distance in the 2-1 victory in game one on Saturday, started three of the four games in the circle and was 2-1 with an ERA of 3.59 and an impressive 8:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

The Vikings will take their five-match win streak on the road this weekend, traveling to UIC and Valparaiso for a pair of Horizon League contests. Cleveland State will first face UIC on Saturday, April 14, before taking on Valparaiso on Sunday, April 15. Both matches this weekend are slated for an 11:00 a.m. start. Last weekend the Vikings earned 6-1 victories over Green Bay and Milwaukee, improving their record to 12-7 overall and 4-0 in league play. CSU is one of just two undefeated teams left in league play, joining UIC who also stands at 4-0 this spring. In the victory over Green Bay, Nicole Janek became the eighth Viking all-time to record 50 career wins, while Alex Power became the first Viking to notch 20 singles wins this season, leading the team with a 21-11 mark. Janek also reached the 20-win milestone the following day against Milwaukee, currently standing at 20-10 on the year.

WOMEN’S GOLF The Vikings are back in action at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (April 14-15), hosted by Bowling Green. The 36 hole tournament will be played at Stone Ridge G.C. and will feature shotgun starts at 9:00 a.m. on both days. It will be CSU’s final tournament leading up to the Horizon League Championship at the end of the month. The Vikings finished fifth of 10 teams at the IPFW Spring Invitational on April 1-2, shooting consecutive rounds of 338. Madeline Kaminski tied for 13th place to lead CSU, carding rounds of 83-83 (166), while Shelly Ford and Micaela Cronin tied for 22nd place. Both shot rounds of 83-87 (170).
