WOMEN’S SOCCER The Vikings will be in action just once this
week, playing at Canisius on Sunday (Sept. 4) at 4:00 p.m. CSU enters the match at 2-2 overall. CSU split two road matches last weekend, winning at IUPUI, 5-1, on Friday (Aug. 24), but falling in overtime at Eastern Illinois, 3-2, on Sunday (Aug. 26). Jaime Avona recorded just the second hat trick in program history in the win over IUPUI, while Valerie Stahl added the other two goals. The five goals were the second most in a game in program history. Kelcey Fischer and Vickie Havas scored in the setback at EIU. Havas now has a goal and three assists through the first two weeks of the season.
CROSS COUNTRY Cleveland State will open the 2012 season
this weekend, taking part in the annual Flyer Invite hosted by the University of Dayton. The women’s race will begin at 11:15 a.m. in Kettering, Ohio. The Vikings will have a new look this season, as they have just five returners and four newcomers. Senior Rachel Niemi and sophomore Katie Webb will serve as co-captains for 2012, and are joined by junior Ashley Berlin and sophomores Tori Holt and Angela Kirila as the veterans of the squad. This year’s newcomers include three freshmen, Maddie Korak, Ashley Lydic and Megan O’Keefe and one sophomore, Amanda Kalain.

Volleyball Prepares For Second Tournament The Vikings will try to stay perfect on the year this week, as they
have four matches on the schedule including a midweek contest at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday (Aug. 28). CSU will then take part in the Indiana Invitational on Friday (Aug. 31) and Saturday (Sept. 1). At the Indiana Invite, the Vikings will face Georgia Tech, Bowling Green and the host Hoosiers. Cleveland State enters the week with a 3-0 record after claiming the IPFW Invitational title last weekend, with wins over Kent State, Murray State and IPFW. Kara Koch was named the tournament MVP, while Annie Djukic and Jackie Dabbelt also earned spots on the alltournament team. Koch led the Viking offense during the opening weekend, combining for 50 kills, while Marie Frease added 28 and Kerry Winchester and Dabbelt each tallied 25. Djukic recorded 131 assists during the tournament, while also adding 25 digs and 11 kills. Defensively the Vikings were led by the duo of Dayna Roberts and Amanda Medvetz who tallied 46 and 45 digs, respectively.

CSU will take on Oakland Friday (Aug. 31) at 5:30 p.m., before then battling Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 2) at 4:00 p.m. The Vikings got off to a strong start this season, taking down Robert Morris on the road 2-0 on Friday (Aug. 24) afternoon. Freshman Cristian Arboleda wasted no time in getting the team on the board as he scored his first career goal to give CSU a 1-0 lead in just the 11th minute of action off a pass from junior defender Zach Ellis-Hayden. Sophomore Mike Derezic put the game out of reach in the 73rd minute scoring from 20 yards out to give CSU a 2-0 lead.
MEN’S GOLF Cleveland State opens the 2012 fall season
when the Vikings compete at the Fourth Annual Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate on Sunday and Monday (Sept. 2-3). The 54 hole event will be played in Verona, N.Y. at the par-72, 7,105yard Turning Stone Resort. CSU returns everyone from last year’s squad that finished third at the league championship, including junior Andrew Bailey, last year’s Horizon League Player of the Year, and senior Michael Klaric, a first team all-league pick last season. Also back are senior Jon Riemer, who placed fifth at the league championship, junior Brendan Byrne and sophomore Michael Balcar. They are joined by four newcomers to the squad.

Avona recorded just the second hat trick in program history with her three goal performance in a 5-1 win at IUPUI on Aug. 24. Avona, who joined Ashley Walchak (2006) as the only CSU women’s soccer players with hat tricks, scored the second, third and fifth goals of the match. After two weeks of the season, Avona is tied for the Horizon League lead with three goals and is third with six points.
