WOMEN’S TENNIS

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cleveland State will take its final road trip of the regular season this week, traveling to Detroit and Wright State. First up will be a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Titans on Thursday (Feb. 23), followed by a 2:00 p.m. contest against the Raiders on Saturday (Feb. 25). The Vikings split their games last week, falling to No. 12 Green Bay, 90-59 and defeating Milwaukee, 70-68. Freshman Cori Coleman tallied a career-high 21 points against the Phoenix, while junior Shalonda Winton notched 30 points and a career-high 18 rebounds against the Panthers. Entering the week, Winton is one of just two Horizon League players to be averaging a double-double, posting 17.5 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game. She also leads the league with 13 double-doubles on the season, with 10 coming in league action. Saturday’s win over Milwaukee marked head coach Kate Peterson Abiad’s 116th career victory at CSU, giving her the most wins in program history.

SOFTBALL The Vikings will compete for the first time since Feb. 12 when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. to compete in the Frost Classic this weekend. CSU will play five teams in three days, beginning with Dayton on Friday (Feb. 24) at 11:00 a.m. The Vikings are 0-4 after starting the season at the University of South Carolina’s Palmetto Classic.

SWIMMING & DIVING The Vikings are traveling to Brown Deer, Wis. to compete at the 2012 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships. Competition begins on Wednesday (Feb. 22) and runs through Saturday (Feb. 25). Last year, both the men and the women placed third.

The Vikings will close out their four-match homestand this Saturday (Feb. 25), hosting Bowling Green and Oakland. CSU will face the Falcons at 12:00 p.m. before hosting the Golden Grizzlies at 4:00 p.m. at the Paramount Tennis Club. CSU was a perfect 3-0 last weekend, defeating Ball State (5-2), Toledo (4-3) and Case Western Reserve (70). Nicole Janek earned three singles wins and teamed with Kara Sherwood to claim three doubles wins over the weekend, while Catrine Bjerrehus, Maria Lazaris, Alex Power and Sherwood all posted two singles victories.

Trey Harmon Men’s Basketball Closes Out Regular Season Cleveland State concludes the regular season with three games over a five day stretch this week, beginning with an 8:00 p.m. EST game at Green Bay on Tuesday (Feb. 21). CSU then returns home to host Detroit at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 23) and Wright State at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 25). The Vikings enter the final week of play in second place in the league at 10-5, one-half game ahead of both Butler and Detroit (10-6). Valparaiso is in first place with a 12-4 mark and needs to win just one of its final two games to clinch the regular season title. CSU is 20-8 overall after dropping two games last week, falling at Milwaukee (86-84) on Tuesday and at home to Drexel (69-49) in a BracketBusters contest on Sunday. Trey Harmon averaged 25.0 points per game in the two contests, including a career-high 27 point effort at Milwaukee. He hit nine three-pointers in the two games and has 199 for his career, one shy of becoming the third player in CSU history to make 200 career three’s.

WRESTLING CSU concluded the regular season with a 36-6 loss to West Virginia on Sunday (Feb. 19). The Vikings received wins from Brandon Sommers (157) and Corey Carlo (165) - both of whom won by one-point decisions. The team will now turn its focus to the Eastern Wrestling Championships which will be held on March 4 at Clarion.

MEN’S TENNIS

The Vikings will continue their road swing this weekend, traveling to the state of Illinois for two contests. CSU will first take on Illinois State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 25) and will then face Northern Illinois at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 26). Last weekend CSU picked up two road wins, defeating St. Bonaventure (7-0) and Buffalo (4-3). The Vikings FENCING claimed all six doubles matches on the weekend, while The team is prepping for the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships Jorg Van Der Vloet and Matt Ford both picked up two to be held the weekend of March 3-4. The following week, Cleveland State will singles wins. be the host site of the NCAA Midwest Regional on March 10-11.


Viking Of The Week Kate Peterson Abiad // Women’s Basketball Last Week With the 70-68 victory over Milwaukee last Saturday, Cleveland State head women’s basketball coach Kate Peterson Abiad recorded her 116th career victory at CSU, and now has the most wins in program history. Peterson Abiad has been at the helm of the Vikings for nine seasons, and became the third coach in program history to record 100 career wins last year. During her tenure she has led the Vikings to four 19-win seasons, two Horizon League Championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
