MEN’S BASKETBALL

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cleveland State returns home for two key Horizon League games this week, hosting Valparaiso on Thursday (Feb. 9) at 7:00 p.m. and Butler at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 11) on ESPN2. The Vikings enter the week in first place in the league at 10-2, just one-half game ahead of second place Valparaiso (10-3). CSU has won five straight games, including three straight on the road, to improve to 20-4 overall. It is the ninth 20-win season in program history and the fourth in the last five years. CSU won at Loyola (65-47) and UIC (70-42) over the weekend. Jeremy Montgomery totaled 30 points in the two games, while Anton Grady had a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards in his first career start at UIC. The Vikings shot .676 (25-37) from the floor at Loyola, the second highest percentage in school history.

The Vikings will play at home for the first time during 2012 this weekend, as they host Xavier and Akron. CSU will first face Xavier at 5:00 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 10) and will then take on Akron at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 12). Both matches will take place at the Paramount Tennis Club in Westlake, Ohio. Last weekend the Vikings notched their first win of the season, as they defeated IPFW 4-3. They also traveled to East Lansing, Mich. where they fell to a tough Michigan State squad, 5-2. Nicole Janek led the Vikings over the weekend, as she won both of her singles matches; 6-1, 6-1 at IPFW and 6-2, 6-4 at Michigan State. Friday, the women will be playing simultaneously with the men’s team, as they try to set a program attendance record, so make sure to bring a friend!

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Vikings will return to the road this week, as they travel to Chicago, Ill. for a pair of Horizon League contests. CSU will first face Loyola in an 8:00 p.m. EST contest on Thursday (Feb. 9), before taking on UIC at 4:00 p.m. EST on Saturday (Feb. 11). Last week, the Vikings dropped two league games to Butler (68-62) and Valparaiso (66-48), falling to 8-14 overall and 3-8 in league action. Shalonda Winton led the Vikings with 50 combined points and 21 rebounds during the two contests, and is now just 22 points shy of 1,000 for her career.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING Two wins each from Carys Behn, Joanna Olsson and Alice Sommerville helped Cleveland State beat UIC 145-98 on Saturday (Feb. 4). The win improved CSU to 5-0 in the Horizon League and earned the women an unblemished 7-0 mark in the friendly waters of the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. The Vikings also took the 400 free relay (3:29.68) and received wins from Alexandra Johansson in the 200 back (2:06.37) and Kacey Cummings - competing for the final time at home - in the 3-meter diving event (288.90).

Dara Toman Softball Opens 2012 In South Carolina The Vikings will open the 2012 campaign on Friday (Feb. 10) at the Palmetto Classic, hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Cleveland State, led by first team Preseason All-Horizon League selection Dara Toman,will play four games over the weekend, beginning with Western Kentucky and Winthrop on Friday. On Saturday (Feb. 11), CSU will battle Tennessee State and then will conclude the weekend with the host Gamecocks on Sunday (Feb. 12).

MEN’S TENNIS The Vikings return home for one match this weekend, as they will host Xavier at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10. The men will be playing simultaneously with the women’s team on Friday, as the try to set a program attendance record at the Paramount Tennis Club in Westlake, Ohio. CSU traveled east for two contests last weekend, as they fell to Columbia, 7-0 and No. 65 Princeton, 6-1. The duo of Ali Shabib and Nolan Marks posted a victory at No. 1 doubles against Columbia, while Matt Ford earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles against Princeton.

WRESTLING CSU dropped both of its Eastern Wrestling League matches in Pennsylvania over the weekend, falling 28-9 at Lock Haven on Friday (Feb. 3) night and losing 34-7 to Bloomsburg on Saturday (Feb. 4). In the match with Lock Haven, Nick Flannery tied a school record with his sixth dual meet pin of the season and Corbin Boone jumped up a weight class and won at 197 pounds. Ben Willeford (125) and Josh Palivoda (141) were victorious on Saturday.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING The Vikings senior class was sent out in style as CSU defeated UIC 138-105 on Saturday (Feb. 4) to cap an undefeated season against members of the Horizon League (4-0) and finish a perfect eight-for-eight at home. Seven of the 13 events went to Cleveland State, including both the 400 medley (3:24.60) and 400 free (3:04.74) relays. Individual winners included Nathan Grant, Justin Hill, Justin Kermack, Al Shillito and Berry Thompson. The team is idle from competition until Feb. 22 when the Horizon League Championships begin in Brown Deer, Wis.

FENCING The Vikings concluded the regular season at the Northwestern Duals on Sunday (Feb. 5) - a competition with top teams from around the country. The men went 1-5 with a 17-10 win over Cal Tech while the women finished 0-6. Cleveland State will host the John Kiraly Memorial Open on Saturday (Feb. 11), a fundraising effort named after the longtime Vikings fencing coach. Woodling Gymnasium will also be the site of the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional on March 10-11.

In the final meet of her career at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium, Behn was a perfect three-for-three in helping Cleveland State defeat UIC 14598 on Saturday (Feb. 4). She won the 200 free with a time of 1:53.24 and the 500 free in 5:08.14. Behn also swam third on the victorious 400 free relay team that bested UIC’s top quartet by almost five seconds, contributing a 51.92 split.
