Steve Weir H e a d C o a c h // 6 t h S e a so n It has not taken long for head coach Steve Weir to put his mark on the Cleveland State men’s and women’s golf programs. A 2006 graduate of CSU and former standout on the golf team, Weir has led the men’s program to three Horizon League Championships and NCAA appearances, while continuing to build the 10-year old women’s program into a league contender. Last season, Weir led a pair of youthful squads to top four finishes at the Horizon League Championship with the men - featuring two sophomores and one freshman - to a third place finish and the women’s team - with four sophomores and one freshman - to a fourth place finish. The 2010-11 season saw Weir lead the men’s squad to the Horizon League Championship - the squad’s fourth league title in the last six years, while helping the women place fourth with a team that featured three freshmen and two sophomores. A tireless recruiter, Weir has continually brought in highly-decorated players, including several all-state selections and student-athletes who have competed in and won prestigious tournaments. In his four seasons at the helm, Weir has developed 13 All-Horizon League players, including Jake Scott who claimed medalist honors at the league championship in 2008 and 2009 and Kent Monas, the 2011 Horizon League Player of the Year. Under Weir, the men’s team has enjoyed unprecedented success, capturing the 2008, 2009 and 2011 Horizon League titles and advancing to the NCAA Regional Championship all three years. In addition, seven players have earned medalist honors under the direction of Weir, while the 2007-08 squad set the school record for lowest round, firing 277 during the first and second rounds at the IPFW Fall Classic. At the 2011 league championship, Andrew Bailey and Michael Klaric tied for co-medalist honors. Weir has also led the women’s program to new heights during the last four years, guiding the squad to a second place finish at the league tournament in 2009, the best showing in program history. He has also led the team to the top seven team scores in program history, including a schoolrecord round of 312 in the final round of the 2011 Zippy Fall Invitational. But Weir’s successes go beyond the golf course as both teams have also been successful in the classroom. That was never more apparent than in 2009 when the women’s team captured the “Best of the Best” Team Award at the John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon in April. The award, presented to the sport having the highest team grade point average in the athletics department, went to women’s golf which boasted a 3.71 team GPA with all six student-athletes having at least a 3.20.

Steve Weir Weir joined the CSU golf staff as an assistant coach in 2007 with a familiarity to the Viking program, having served as an assistant coach to the men’s and women’s squads in 2006-07. He has also been the Assistant Golf Professional at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinkley since April, 2007. He had an outstanding collegiate career, spending time at Kent State and BaldwinWallace before enrolling at CSU in September of 2005. In his lone golf season as a Viking, Weir earned first team All-Horizon League honors in 2006 and was a two-time Horizon League Golfer of the Week. He was second on the team in stroke average (75.3), carding a school-record, eightunder-par 63 en route to a runner-up finish at the Belmont Intercollegiate. Weir also finished second at the Dayton Spring Invitational, helping the Vikings win the team title by eight shots. Weir was a large factor in the Vikings claiming the 2006 Horizon League Championship and advancing to the NCAA regionals, shooting rounds of 70-72-74 (216) and finishing 11th overall. In 2005, Weir captured the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship and also advanced to the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. At Baldwin-Wallace, Weir holds the best season average in school-history when he posted 75.2 strokes per round in the fall of 2003, including a low round of 70. Weir and his wife, Alicia, reside in Berea with their one year old daughter, Kinslee.

Doug Barber A ss i s ta n t C o a c h // 2 n d S e a so n Doug Barber, a former standout in the men’s golf program at Cleveland State, is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Vikings. Barber joined the CSU staff in the fall of 2011 after spending a season as a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois. As a player, Barber was a key component for the Vikings, helping CSU to a pair of league titles and berths in the NCAA regionals. As a freshman, Barber captured medalist honors at the 2005 Horizon League Championship, carding rounds of 71-72-73 (216) to win by three shots. The following year, he helped CSU win the league title and as a senior in 2008, Barber earned first team All-Horizon League honors after helping CSU win the league title. Earlier in the year, he won the Norm Bullock Invitational, shooting rounds of 73-67-74 (214), helping CSU win the team title. A native of Willoughby, Ohio, Barber graduated from Cleveland State with a Bachelor of Arts in math. He has also served as the head freshman boys basketball coach at Willoughby South H.S. and in the summer, has helped teach the game of golf to children at Lost Nation G.C.

The John Telich, Sr. Golf Technology Center On Feb. 12, 2004 Cleveland State officially dedicated the John Telich Sr. Golf Technology Center. Housed in the Physical Education Building, the facility provides CSU’s men’s and women’s teams a first class facility in which to train year-round, giving them an advantage over much of their competition. First-year head coach Brian Varsey noted how fortunate he was to inherit such a first-class facility. “We are grateful for the generosity of Mr. Telich in providing for a unique complete environment for our student athletes to learn and grow. As a team and an athletic department we are proud it has his name and embodies his continued commitment to Cleveland State University golf. We wouldn’t be where we are today without him.” The Tech Center provides a year round home for the Viking golf program. It contains a three-station, full swing practice area as well as a recently-completed five hundred-square foot contoured putting surface. The tech center also includes a sophisticated video monitoring system and an equipment storage area. A separate lounge area with couches and a television completes the tech center, offering relaxation space for the golfers to unwind after a hard days’ work.
