MEN’S BASKETBALL Cleveland State returns home to close out the first

The Vikings snapped their five-match losing skid by sweeping their three opponents at the George Mason Patriot Duals on Saturday (Jan. 14). CSU beat VMI 22-15 and Davidson 31-6 before finishing off the host Patriots 25-12. Nine different Vikings won at least two matches, highlighted by Corey Carlo’s unblemished 3-0 mark at 165 pounds. Ben Willeford (125), Nick Flannery (133), Mike Mencini (149), Brandon Sommers (157), Aric Thurn (174), Bobby Blankenship (184), Nick Anthony (197) and Garry Yarborogh (285) all added two victories.

Tim Kamczyc scored 17 points and Butler and added 18 against Butler, his eighth and ninth double-digit outputs this year. Anton Grady just missed his first career double-double with nine points and a career-best 10 rebounds at Valparaiso. D’Aundray Brown leads the team in scoring (11.8).

Men’s Tennis Kicks Off 2012 Spring Season

The Vikings will kick off their 2012 spring season this weekend as

they host Duquesne at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 20) at the Paramount Tennis Club. CSU, who will be trying for its sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season, will be led by Yannick Goossens, the lone senior on the team. Goossens will be joined by junior Jay Jones, sophomores Matt Kuelker and Matt Ford and freshmen Nolan Marks, Ali Shabib, Ben Shklyar and Jorg Van Der Vloet.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Vikings will hit the road once again this weekend, as they take their annual trip to Wisconsin to face No. 14/12 Green Bay and Milwaukee. CSU will first face the Panthers on Thursday (Jan. 19) at 8:00 p.m. EST, before taking on the Phoenix at 2:00 p.m. EST on Saturday (Jan. 21). Last weekend the Vikings earned a split at home, defeating UIC, 83-80, before falling to Loyola, 85-67. Shalonda Winton led the Vikings during both games, posting 29 points and 12 rebounds against both the Flames and Ramblers. Winton, who now has six double-doubles on the season, is one of three Vikings averaging double-digit points this year, leading the team at 15.2 points per contest.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

Five wins in 13 events helped the Cleveland State women’s swimming and diving team come away with a split at the Oakland University Tri-Meet on Saturday (Jan. 14), knocking off Xavier and falling to Oakland. Carys Behn picked up the first CSU win of the day when she won the 200 free in 1:54.05, just .05 ahead of the next closest finisher. Alice Sommerville became the second winner of the afternoon with a win in the 50 free (24.20). Joanna Olsson won the 200 fly (2:05.17) and took second in the 200 IM (2:07.47) while Kacey Cummings won the 3-meter board with a 257.25. The Vikings closed with a win in the 400 free relay as Kopacko, Behn, Hestley and Amanda Pallija teamed together to cover the distance in 3:37.29.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

A pair of wins from Berry Thompson and Josh Gonzalez, as well as a Justin Kermack victory helped the Cleveland State men’s swimming and diving team come away with a split at the Oakland University Tri-Meet in Rochester, Mich. on Saturday (Jan. 14). CSU lost to host Oakland, but defeated Xavier, 165-72. Thompson won the 50 (20.95) and 100 free (45.55). Neither Oakland nor Xavier had male divers but Gonzalez posted the top scores on both the 1-meter (287.78) and 3-meter (314.93) boards. Kermack won the 200 fly by a full two seconds when he touched in 1:52.19.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The Vikings are set to open their 2012 spring season this weekend, as they travel to Chicago, Ill. to take on DePaul at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 21). CSU, which returns seven letterwinners from last season, are coming off their best finish in school history after reaching the championship match of the Horizon League Tournament. Catrine Bjerrehus is the lone senior on the squad, and will be joined by juniors Nicole Janek, Maria Lazaris and Mengdi Liu, and sophomores Alex Bush, Alex Power and Kara Sherwood.

Carlo helped the Vikings to a perfect 3-0 mark at the George Mason Patriot Duals on Saturday as the only Viking grappler to win all three of his duals. He won his first match against VMI on a 9-3 count then narrowly edged out Davidson’s Tyler Mullen, 6-5. A 5-1 decision against George Mason’s Ty Knepp in the finale improved Carlo to 7-4 in dual meets this season.
