MEN’S BASKETBALL Cleveland State hits the road for its annual trip
to Indiana this week, playing at Butler on Friday (Jan. 13) at 7:00 p.m. on ESPNU and at Valparaiso on Sunday (Jan. 15) at 2:35 p.m. EST. CSU improved to 14-3 overall and maintained its share of first place in the Horizon League at 4-1 with wins over UIC and Loyola at home last week. After missing Thursday’s game against UIC, Trey Harmon returned to hit a career-high six threepointers in the win over Loyola, going 6-of-7 from three-point. Anton Grady averaged 11.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in the two games, while Tim Kamczyc averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL For the first time this season the Vikings will host a pair of Horizon League opponents in the Wolstein Center, as CSU welcomes UIC and Loyola for a two-game homestand this weekend. CSU will face UIC at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 12), before taking on Loyola at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 14). Last week CSU earned its first league victory of the year, defeating Valparaiso, 49-45 behind a career-high 16 points from Cori Coleman and a matching 16-point effort from Shalonda Winton. The Vikings then closed their three-game road swing with a 67-43 loss at Butler despite a season-high 20 points from Winton. This season, CSU has three players averaging double-digit points, led by Destinee Blue who is averaging 13.7 points. Winton (13.2) and Takima Keane (10.4) are the other Vikings to average double-digit points.

C a ry s B e h n Women’s Swimming & Diving Continues Successful Season The Vikings women’s swimming and diving team won the
Bob Mowerson Sprint Meet in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Friday (Jan. 6) to start 2012 in strong fashion, posting 231 points to win the 17-team event. Nikki Kolis won the 400 meter free with a time of 4:46.98 while teammates Amanda Pallija, Ashley Rossi and Erin Jajtner were the next three to touch. Carys Behn won the 100 meter free with a 1:00.95, just ahead of Alexandra Johansson (1:03.56) and Jamie Puls (1:04.17). The Vikings had another one-two-three sweep in the 200 meter IM as Joanna Olsson won the event with a 2:31.54 while Gretchen Hestley was just off the pace with a 2:35.17 and Megan Splain was third with a 2:41.55. Christine Kopacko won the final event, the 50 meter free, in 28.22.
Ben Willeford picked up a win at 125 pounds in the Vikings 37-3 loss to host Tennessee-Chattanooga on Sunday (Jan. 8) when he edged Blake Thomas on a 4-2 decision to improve to 12-10 and 4-6 in dual meets this season. CSU dropped four matches by three points or less to fall to 3-7 on the year. Nick Flannery, fresh off a seventh place finish at Tennessee-Chattanooga’s Southern Scuffle last weekend, lost on a 12-9 count to UTC’s Nick Soto, the 14th ranked wrestler in the nation. Brandon Sommers, wrestling in his first match of the season, was edged 4-2 by Dan Waddell at 157 pounds. Corey Carlo lost on a 2-0 decision at 165 pounds and Corbin Boone (184) fell 3-1 in an extra period.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING The Cleveland State men’s swimming and
diving team kicked off 2012 on a strong note, besting the other 12 teams in the field to win the Bob Mowerson Sprint Meet held on Friday (Jan. 6) at the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s ourdoor aquatic center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Graham Thoresen won the 400 meter free with a time of 4:21.35 with teammates Alex Cohara (4:25.18) and Pieter Ritz (4:25.50) placing second and third, respectively. Berry Thompson won the 100 meter free with a 53.89 while CSU had another one-two-three sweep in the 200 meter IM. Justin Kermack won the event with a 2:15.35 and Brian Ferro (2:15.67) and Nathan Grant rounded out the trio with a 2:22.00.

Kamczyc helped the Vikings to a pair of wins last week, averaging 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. He had nine points and four rebounds in a win over UIC on Thursday and came back with 11 points and nine rebounds, just missing his first career double-double on Saturday against Loyola. In the two games, Kamczyc show .750 (9-12) from the floor, adding five assists and four steals.
