FENCING
The Vikings will head to the postseason for just the seventh time in program history when the sixth-seeded Vikings open play in the 2012 National Invitational Tournament at third-seeded Stanford on Tuesday (March 13) at 11:00 p.m. EST. This will be the fifth trip to the NIT for CSU with the Vikings owning a 3-4 record all-time in the tournament. Cleveland State will be led by the trio of Trey Harmon, D’Aundray Brown and Anton Grady, who all earned Horizon League honors this season. Harmon earned a spot on the all-league second team and all-defensive team, while Brown joined him on the all-defensive team and Grady was named to the all-newcomer team. Three Vikings are averaging doule-digit points on the season; Harmon (12.9 ppg), Brown (11.0) and Jeremy Montgomery (10.8), while Tim Kamczyc is close behind with 9.0 points per contest. The Vikings last played on March 3 when they fell to Detroit in the Horizon League Championship semifinals and enter the NIT with a 22-10 overall record. Tuesday’s game will mark the first-ever meeting in men’s basketball between the Vikings and the Cardinal.
Cleveland State hosted the NCAA Fencing Midwest Regional over the weekend with the women competing on Saturday (March 10) and the men on Sunday (March 11). Alex Dickinson placed 10th in the epee contest while Stephanie Lee was 17th of 20 foilists on Saturday. The following day, four CSU men’s fencers placed in the top 12: Tom Bienvenu placed 10th in the sabre group, one spot ahead of teammate Wes Miller. Levi Young (epee) and Phelan Spence (foil) each took 12th in their respective weapons. Bryan Twitchell and Mike McDonald took 14th and 17th, respectively, in the sabre competition. John Cuturic was 16th in the foil group. The event featured student-athletes from Cleveland State, Detroit, Lawrence, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wayne State and was officiated by wellknown referees at the national and international levels.
MEN’S & WOMEN’S TENNIS After having their first match postponed due to rain, the Vikings will continue their Spring Training Trip with at least two more matches this week. The men will face Stetson at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday (March 13) and Florida Atlantic at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday (March 14), while the women will also play Florida Atlantic on Wednesday and Albany at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday (March 15). CSU was scheduled to play Embry-Riddle on Sunday, but due to rain in the area the match was postponed and the two teams will try to reschedule the contest for later this week.
Michael Klaric Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season At BenBow Invite Cleveland State opens the spring season this week when the Vikings compete at the BenBow Invite in Jacksonville, Fla., on Monday and Tuesday (March 12-13). The Vikings enjoyed a solid fall season, including three consecutive topfive finishes to end the season. The duo of Junior Michael Klaric and Sophomore Andrew Bailey paced the Vikings during the fall, Klaric averaging a 73.8 per round and Bailey with a team-best 73.4 scoring average. Klaric and Bailey will be joined by junior Jon Riemer, sophomore Brendan Byrne and freshmen Mike Balcar, Keith Brooks and Nick Paxos during the spring season.
SOFTBALL The Vikings will stay in Florida to take part in the Rebel Games this week, playing eight games over a five-day span. CSU will open play with Bryant and Nebraska-Omaha on Monday (March 12) and will then face Manhattan and Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday (March 14). Wagner and Howard will be up next on Thursday (March 15) before CSU closes the week with Lafayette and Rider on Friday (March 16). Cleveland State went 0-5 over the weekend at the Under Armour Showcase, hosted by South Florida. The Viking offense struggled early in the tournament, posting two runs in their first three games before breaking out for six runs in a loss to Canisius. The weekend concluded with a 3-2 loss to Wagner, a game in which the Vikings had seven hits.
WOMEN’S GOLF The Vikings will kick off the 2012 spring season this week as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for the Butler BenBow Invite on Monday (March 12) and Tuesday (March 13). Junior Ariel Sparrow led the Vikings with an 80.4 scoring average in the fall, including a career-low round of 73 at the Zippy Invitational. Sparrow’s classmate, Lisa Barber, averaged 82.2 per round in the fall, including a career-low 76 on two occasions. The two upperclassmen are joined on the roster by a talented quartet of sophomores-Steff Camarata, Micaela Cronin, Shelly Ford and Madeline Kaminski-as well as freshman Colleen Miller.
