SOFTBALL CSU opens league play with three games against
Detroit at Viking Field this weekend. The teams will play a twinbill on Saturday (March 23) at 4:00 p.m. and a single game on Sunday (March 24) at 1:00 p.m. CSU is coming off a busy spring break trip that saw the team play six games in a three-day span at Jackson State, going 4-2 in that stretch. Alex Radjen went 3-1 on the mound, while Erica McNew led the way offensively for CSU hitting .438 with seven hits, four home runs, and nine RBI’s.
MEN’S TENNIS Cleveland State will begin Horizon League play
this weekend, hosting Detroit at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 24 Over the past five seasons the Vikings have gone 30-4 in league play - including a stretch of 26-straight victories. CSU enters the weekend with a 3-9 mark, dropping matches at North Florida, Central Florida and Stetson on its Spring Training Trip last week. Matt Kuelker has a team-high five singles wins during the spring season.
WOMEN’S TENNIS CSU returns to the courts
after a 10-day break from competition this weekend, traveling to Akron for a 5:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, March 23 and hosting Detroit in a 3:00 p.m. match on Sunday, March 24. Sunday’s contest against the Titans will be the Horizon League opener for the Vikings, who have posted a 21-3 record in league play over the last three seasons. The Vikings are 6-7 this season, most recently going 1-2 during a three-match Florida roadswing, including a 4-3 win over Florida Atlantic.

Ben Willeford WRESTLING The Cleveland State wrestling program takes center stage
this week as junior 125-pounder Ben Willeford and freshman heavyweight Riley Shaw travel to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the NCAA Championships. Both wrestlers open the competition with first round matches on Thursday (March 21). Willeford will face Iowa’s Matt McDonough, the third-seed and defending national champion, while Shaw opens with eighth-seeded Mike McClure of Michigan State. The duo are CSU’s first national qualifiers since 2009. Willeford earned a bid to nationals after winning the EWL title at 125 pounds. He leads the Vikings with 22 wins and was the first Viking wrestling to win an EWL title since Rashard Goff captured the heavyweight championship in 2009. Shaw, who finished third at the EWL Championships, is the first CSU true freshman to make the championships since 2005. He has 19 wins this season.
at the Memphis Tiger Intercollegiate on March 25-26. CSU resumed its spring season at the Benbow Invitational on March 11-12, finishing fifth of 14 teams at the event in Jacksonville, Fla. The Vikings carded rounds of 298 and 297. Junior Andrew Bailey shot 74-67 (141) and was tied for the lead after 36 holes, but fell on the first playoff hole to finish as the runner-up. His final round 67 was a career-low.
WOMEN’S GOLF CSU is out of action until March 25-26 when the
Vikings compete in the Butler Spring Invitational. The Vikings used balanced scoring throughout the lineup to finish second of 10 teams at the Benbow Invitational (March 11-12) to open the spring season. CSU was tied for first place after the opening round at 327 and carded a 318 second round. All five of CSU’s scorers placed in the top-20 with Madeline Kaminski (79-83) and Ariel Sparrow (81-81) tying for 15th place at 162.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The Vikings season came to an end with a 69-62
setback at Youngstown State in the Horizon League quarterfinals on Wednesday night. Shalonda Winton finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Honesty King totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds for her second career double-double. CSU finished the year with a 13-17 mark. Winton was named to the All-Horizon League first team and was the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year.
