MEN’S BASKETBALL Eighth-seeded Cleveland State
opens play in the Horizon League Championship at fifth-seeded UIC on Tuesday (March 5) at 8:00 p.m. EST. The Vikings swept the regular season series from UIC. CSU finished the regular season with a 14-17 overall mark and tied for seventh in the league with Loyola at 5-11. The Ramblers earned the No. 7 seed over CSU thanks to a season sweep of the Vikings, including an 8760 win in Chicago in the regular season finale on Saturday (March 2).
MEN’S TENNIS The Vikings travels south for their annual trip to
Florida, taking on North Florida (March 9), Central Florida (March 10) and Stetson (March 12) during their trip. Two weeks ago, CSU improved to 2-1 at home this season, defeating St. Bonaventure, 6-1. The Vikings swept the doubles matches for the second time this season, and had singles wins from Jorg van der Vloet (No. 1), Matt Kuelker (No. 2), Nolan Marks (No. 3), Niklas Jonsson (No. 5) and Matt Ford (No. 6).
WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings travel south to Florida and play their
first of three matches on its Spring Training trip on Saturday (March 9) at Florida Atlantic at 9:30 a.m. CSU ran its win streak to four straight with a pair of wins over the weekend. The Vikings earned a 5-2 win over IPFW at home on Friday (March. 1) and won at Duquesne, 6-1, on Saturday (March 2). The Vikings won the doubles point in both matches, the third straight time CSU earned the doubles point, including a sweep of all three against Duquesne.

M ark D e Swardt SWIMMING & DIVING The men’s swimming and diving team claimed its first Ho-
rizon League Championship since 2006, while the women’s team finished as the runner-up at the league championship. The four-day event was contested from Wednesday through Saturday (Feb. 27-March 2) on the campus of UIC. The men’s squad trailed Milwaukee by five points after the first day, but took the lead on Thursday and never looked back, scoring 800.5 points to outdistance second place Milwaukee by 46.5 points. Senior Mark deSwardt was the Swimmer of the Meet after winning two events, while junior Al Shillito was the Men’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year. Head coach Wally Morton was tabbed the Horizon League Coach of the Year. The CSU women held the lead after each of the first three days of competition, but Milwaukee rallied on the final day. The Vikings scored 657.5 points to finish 34 behind Milwaukee.

The Vikings fell to Loyola on Monday, 72-67, and rebounded to knock off Valparaiso, 58-54, on Senior Day on Saturday. Shalonda Winton had double-doubles in both games and is averaging 22.3 points and 10.4 rebounds.
SOFTBALL CSU is back in action for the first time in three
weeks when the Vikings play five games at the Oklahoma State Invitationa from Friday through Sunday (March 8-10). CSU’s four games at the Evansville Invitational over the weekend were cancelled due to bad weather. The Vikings are 3-6 overall after winning three of four games at the CSU Dome Tournament on Feb. 1617. Dara Toman (Player) and Susan Knight (Pitcher) earned Horizon League Player of the Week honors.
WRESTLING CSU returns to
action on Saturday (March 9) when the Vikings compete in the EWL Championships in Edinboro, Pa. CSU finished the regular season two weeks ago, going 1-2 in a quad meet in Woodling Gyn. CSU opened the competition with setbacks to Ohio and Northern Illinois, before an 18-15 win over Gardner-Webb. Nick Flannery went 3-0 with two pins, while Corey Carlo and Riley Shaw each picked up two wins on Sunday.
