MEN’S TENNIS For the fifth time in the past six seasons the Vikings
will make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, traveling to No. 5 Ohio State for a first round contest. at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10. This will be the second time that CSU has faced Ohio State in NCAA action under head coach Brian Etzkin. Notre Dame and Washington will also be at the Ohio State regional, with the winners of the two first round contests set to meet in a second round match on Saturday, May 11. The Vikings earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament after capturing their fifth Horizon League title, by way of a 4-3 upset over top-seeded Green Bay. CSU will be trying for its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory this weekend, as the Vikings have fallen to Kentucky and Ohio State in their previous postseason appearances. All five trips to the NCAA Tournament have come under head coach Brian Etzkin, who has been with the team since the 2002-03 season. Entering the weekend, Matt Kuelker has a teambest 18-15 singles record, while Ali Shabib is close behind with a 17-15 mark. Jorg van der Vloet and Joe VanMeter both have 14 singles wins on the year, while Niklas Jonsson has 13 and Nolan Marks has 11. CSU’s No. 1 doubles team of Shabib and Jonsson has an outstanding 14-4 record this spring, while the No. 2 team of Marks and Kuelker have a 7-3 mark and the No. 3 duo of van der Vloet and VanMeter stand at 6-3 this spring.
SOFTBALL The Vikings enter the Horizon League Championship as the No. 4 seed this week, playing a first round game against fifth-seeded Wright State on Wednesday (May 8) at 12:00 p.m. EST in Chicago. UIC is the top seed and will host the tournament with Loyola as the No. 2 seed. Valparaiso is the No. 3 seed with CSU, Wright State and Youngstown State rounding out the field. The championship of the double elimination tournament will be played on Saturday (May 11) at 12:00 p.m. EST. If necessary, the winner-take-all game will be played at 2:30 p.m. The Vikings finished the regular season by splitting six games last week, concluding the year with a 21-25 overall record and 10-9 in the league. CSU split a twinbill at Kent State on Tuesday before earning a 4-3 win over Robert Morris on Thursday thanks to a two-run walk-off double by Cynthia Woodard. The Vikings took the series opener at UIC on Saturday, 7-3, but dropped the final two games of the series. CSU boasts a league-leading 49 home runs, with Erica McNew and Dara Toman combining for 32 long balls. McNew nearly captured the Horizon League triple crown, leading the league with a .414 batting average and 18 homers. McNew’s 39 runs batted in were four shy of matching Valparaiso freshman Janelle Bouchard’s League-high.
VESPYS The Cleveland State Department of Athletics hosted
the first-ever VESPY Awards on April 30 in the Student Center Ball Room in front of more than 300 studentathletes, coaches, administrators, staff and alumni. Designed by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to serve as the end of the year awards banquet, the night began with the arrival and interviews on the green carpet in the main entry way of the student center. The final presentation of the night was the graduating seniors receiving stolls to wear at next weekend’s commencement ceremonies. Knight was outstanding in the pitcher’s circle last week, posting a 3-0 mark with a 2.82 ERA in 22.1 innings of work. She started three games last week and threw a pair of complete games, striking out 16 and walking just four in her four appearances in the circle. At the plate, Knight also delivered an RBI double.
