2012 S c h ed u le 2012 S eason P rev i e w Following a solid 9-9-1 2011 campaign, the 2012 version of the CSU Vikings have high hopes for the upcoming season. If there is one word that could easily describe this 2012 group of Vikings as they get ready for the season it would be experienced. The Vikings not only bring back 2011 all-league honorees Aaron Adkins, Admir Suljevic, Brad Stuver, Aslinn Rodas and Mike Derezic, they return 17 players off of last year’s 9-9-1 team that finished tied for second in the Horizon League standings (5-2-1). “This is their year,” said head coach Ali Kazemaini on the returning group. “Hopefully they have the experience of the last couple years. We’re excited but we don’t want to get too excited until we find the right chemistry, every year is different.” One area that should have some strong chemistry is offensively, as CSU brings back every player (seven in total) who scored a goal last season. “The offense is going to be key for us, like any other sport,” Kazemaini said. “We have figured out a way to maintain a lot of ball possession and if we can complement that with some timely finishing I think that’s when we’re good.” Some of those players who will be looking to take on that scoring load include Aaron Adkins (nine goals in 2011), Admir Suljevic (seven goals in 2011), and Jordan Hart (five goals in 2011). BothAdkins and Suljevic were first team all-league performers last season for CSU at the forward spot. The midfield will also boast two all-league returners for CSU as Derezic, a member of the all-newcomer team in 2011, and Rodas, a second team all-league member, will
be fighting at both ends of the field for the Vikings. They will be joined in the midfield by a mix of players including junior Tommy Fitzgerald, sophomores Milos Govedarica and Jacob Naumann, and freshmen Cristian Arboleda, Victor Zamora and Danilo Radjen. Led by senior Brad Stuver in goal (66 saves last season) the team will be looking to have continued success on the defensive end of the field as well to help complement those other positions. Helping Stuver on the defensive end of the field is a strong group including Visnu Maharaj, Zach EllisHayden, Justin Cree, Justin Mancine, Cameron Eisses and Al James, among others. 2012 Horizon League Preseason Poll

Ali Kazemaini
TJ K o l b a H e a d C o a c h // S e v e n t h S e a s o n
When Ali Kazemaini took over the Cleveland State soccer program in 2006, the team was coming off a winless season and expectations were not very high. In a short period he has built the program to the point where big things are expected, evidenced by the fact the Vikings were tabbed to finish second in the 2012 Horizon League Preseason Poll. In his 19 years as a head coach Ali Kazemaini has compiled a record of 219-133-18, including 43 victories at Cleveland State and a 22-7-1 record at Krenzler Field over the past four seasons. Last season Kazemaini led a young Vikings team that continued to improve, finishing 9-9-1 in 2011, including winning three of its final four games to end the season. Taking over the winless CSU program beginning with the 2006 season, he returned immediate results. Coach Kazemaini led the Vikings to the largest turnaround among all NCAA Division I programs, ending the season with a 6-10-2 record. During the 2007 season, the Vikings finished with a record of 3-7-2 in matches decided by one goal or less, indicating they were better than their 3-12-3 overall record. The Vikings were able to rebound under Kazemaini in 2008 by going 5-5-2 in matches decided by one goal or fewer and posting an overall record of 9-8-3, leading the team to the finals of the Horizon League Championship for the first time since 2002. Kazemaini came back to Cleveland State after 14 successful seasons as head coach at John Carroll University. Kazemaini took over at JCU in 1992 and the Blue Streaks immediately benefited, going 15-2-1 and winning the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship in his first season. The accomplishments quickly piled up. He won seven OAC regular season titles during his 14 seasons, earning a league tournament berth 12 times and claiming four tournament championships. He guided his teams to the NCAA Tournament in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005, highThe Kazemaini Coaching File lighted by a trip to the round of 16 in 2003. For his efforts, Kazemaini was named OAC Coach of the Year three times (2000, At John Carroll (1992-2005) 2001, & 2005) and the NSCAA/Adidas Regional Coach of the Year twice (2000 & Year W L T 2001). 1992 15 2 1 During his tenure at John Carroll, Kazemaini coached players who won all-league 1993 17 3 0 honors 42 times, all-region accolades 21 times and 31 All-Ohio choices. 1994 11 7 2 In the classroom, eight of his players were named to the CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict team, with two earning Academic All-America honors. 1995 12 4 2 A native of Tehran, Iran, Kazemaini originally came to Cleveland State in 1980 1996 10 9 1 and played on teams that compiled a 42-21-12 record, making one NCAA 1997 12 6 1 Championship appearance. 1998 8 9 0 Kazemaini, one of two players in Vikings history to lead the team in scoring four 1999 9 7 1 straight years, currently 2000 12 3 2 ranks fifth in CSU history in 2001 15 3 0 goals (41), sixth in total 2002 13 5 2 points (102) and ninth in 2003 17 5 0 assists (20). 2004 12 6 0 Kazemaini began his CSU playing career in fine 2005 13 7 1 fashion, leading the team in Total 176 76 13 goals (6), assists (4) and points (16) in 1980. A s s i s ta n t C o a c h // S e v e n t h S e a s o n T.J. Kolba returns for his seventh season as an assistant coach for Cleveland State, where he handles all administrative, travel and budgetary matters for the Vikings. He also assists with on-field coaching and recruiting. Kolba has helped instill the improvement and consistency the team is looking for as evident from the past six years of the program. In the 2005 season, the year before Kolba joined the men’s soccer team with head coach Ali Kazemaini, the team was winless. During 2006, Kolba helped lead the Vikings to the largest turnaround among all NCAA Division I programs, with a 6-10-2 record. For the first two years of the Kazemaini and Kolba regime, CSU’s record was 9-22-5. Over the most recent four years of his involvement, however, Kolba has helped lead the team to 34 wins, including a victory over No. 1 Akron in 2010. The Vikings, along with both coaches, will continue to work hard and strive for even greater improvement in the next few years. Kolba and Kazemaini have been working together for seven seasons, six at CSU and one at John Carroll University where Kolba also served as an assistant coach under Kazemaini. In his lone campaign at John Carroll, Kolba helped lead the Blue Streaks to a 13-7-1 overall mark, regular and postseason Ohio Athletic Conference crowns and a berth in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. A four-year letterwinner and three-year captain for the Blue Streaks, Kolba was recognized as the Ohio Athletic Conference Defender of the Year as a senior in 2004. A three-time All-OAC selection, Kolba finished his career with 24 points (eight goals and eight assists) in 73 matches. His defensive efforts helped lead the Blue Streaks to three consecutive OAC Championship matches. As a freshman, he netted John Carroll’s first-ever postseason goal when he scored against Wilmington in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. In addition to his duties at CSU, Kolba serves as a staff coach with the Cleveland Soccer Academy and is also a member of the State Olympic Development coaching staff. Kolba graduated from John Carroll in the fall of 2004 with a degree in marketing and logistics.

During that time he guided the U-16 team to a division title and subsequent berth in the National Championships. He was an assistant coach at Louisville in 2008 before working at Brad Friedel’s Premier SoccerAcademy in 2009. He also served as an assistant coach at St. Ignatius H.S., helping the Wildcats to a 23-1 mark and state runner-up finish. A 2005 graduate of Akron with a degree in business marketing, Harwart was a two-year standout for the Zips after transferring from Ashland. In 2002, Harwat was named the MAC Newcomer of the Year, as well as first teamAll-MAC and all-region after leading the team with nine goals and 22 points. A year later, Harwat earned first team all-league and all-region honors after tallying 23 points on nine goals and five assists, helping the Zips to the third round of the NCAA Championship. CSU was led by a balanced offensive attack that saw seven different players score goals, including three players who finished with five or more on the year. Junior Aaron Adkins led the way on the offensive attack, leading the team with nine goals as well as tying for the team lead with 19 points. Adkins was followed in the scoring column by a pair of sophomores, Admir Suljevic and Jordan Hart, who scored seven and five goals respectively. Junior Brad Stuver was able to control the net for CSU in goal as he posted a 9-8-1 overall record to go along with five shutouts.
That two game winning streak began what turned into a streaky season for the Vikings squad. After going 0-5-1 over the next six games, CSU rebounded and posted four straight victories to bring their overall record back to .500 at 6-6-1 and 3-1-1 in league play. Following the four game winning streak the team faltered again, dropping the next two games on the schedule. Both losses were tough one goal setbacks against IUPUI and league rival Green Bay. The ups and downs of a long season continued to finish the year as the team was able to rally after the one goal defeats to win their final three regular season contests. The team’s 5-2-1 record in league play during the regular season was able to earn CSU the number three overall seed in the league tournament, where they then took on number six seed Loyola. Just as conference games are expected to be, this one was a close one. The two teams battled all game long before Loyola was able to pull out a tough 1-0 win to move on to round two. Loyola was able to put one in the back of the net relatively early in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute of play. Despite multiple chances, including a shot off the cross bar, the Vikings were never able to bounce back. Although the team was disappointed with the first round exit the season wasn’t all bad news as six members of the squad were able to earn AllHorizon League honors. Junior Aaron Adkins, redshirt sophomore Admir Suljevic and senior midfielder Manuel Conde all earned first team All-Horizon Leaugue honors. Sophomore midfielder Aslinn Rodas and junior goalie Brad Stuver followed with second team honors. Freshman Mike Derezic was named to the allnewcomer squad.
