2014 SEASON PREVIEW Under head coach Ali Kazemaini, Cleveland State finished the 2013 season with an 8-12 record and a 3-4 mark in the Horizon League. The first half of the season saw some rough spots, but the Vikings finished the season with a 5-3 record after October 12. While last season’s team was loaded with senior leadership all over the field, this year’s team will be younger, with just five seniors. Additionally, four of the nine upperclassmen on this team are transfers. The team will welcome in five total transfers and nine freshmen as they look to challenge for the Horizon League crown. Here is a positional group breakdown of the 2014 Vikings. FORWARD Between graduation and transfers, the Vikings lost 14 goals and 10 assists from forwards. Fortunately, the team has recruited well and has some good, young talent ready to take control in the front-third of the field. Seniors Alex Obbey and Mike Matlock will look to have breakout seasons in their final collegiate campaigns after struggling to find consistancy in their first three seasons. Junior Cristian Arboleda looks to find more playing time for the Vikings after appearing in 10 matches last season. Sophomore Dan Koniarczyk had a good showing his freshman year in 14 games and will look to build on that in an expanded role this upcoming season. The addition of transfer Thomas Beck could pay huge dividends right away for the Vikings. Beck is a proven collegeiate scorer, who scored 31 goals in three season at the University of Mount Union. Fellow transfer Wallis Debourou is looking for the opportunity to prove he can make an impact on the collegiate level after transferring from Saint Francis (Pa.). The most intriguing transfer may be junior Alvaro Pichardo, who comes to CSU after spending two seasons at the University of Mobile. Pichardo was a dynamo his freshman year in the Yellowhammer State, scoring 12 goals in the team’s run to an NAIA national championship in 2012.

MIDFIELD Undoubtedly the midfield unit for this 2014 Vikings squad will benefit from loads of depth. The coaching staff signed four freshmen midfielders, and returns some proven veterans. The real excitement this season is about sophomore Sergio Manesio, who played and started in 19 of the team’s 20 games last season, was second on the team in goals last season with five, and finished the season with 12 points. The coaching staff will look to Manesio to continue to provide scoring chances for himself as well as the other players around him. Three-year starter Mike Derezic will provide leadership and experience in the middle half of the field for the Vikings. The former Horizon League All-Newcomer Team member will also look to set the tone with his physicality. Fellow senior Jacob Naumann will look to hold down a midfield spot in his final season, while juniors Cheo Armstrong and Victor Zamora will look to expand their roles and provide more stability after coming off the bench for most of last season. DEFENSE After learning behind an experienced group last season, sophomore James Milli will look to prove he can be a mainstay in the CSU defense. Talented freshmen Michael Dichlian, Jake Lagania, and Kevin Blackwood will look to compete for a starting spot in their first year on campus. Transfer Nick Kane will add some depth in the back third of the field. GOALKEEPER The Vikings had three keepers who started at least five games last season, one of whom was sophomore Nick Ciraldo who will likely get the first chance to capture the starting keeper spot after starting 10 games as a freshman. Zach Petrenko returns to the squad after a year away from the team. He saw limited playing time as freshman in 2012. Mount Olive transfer Aleksandar Drobac will look to compete for the spot as well.

Krenzler Field CSU’ s H ome S occer F ield F or M ore T han T wo D ecades Krenzler Field, the home of Viking soccer for more than two decades, reopened in 2005 after undergoing a $2.9 million renovation that transformed it from a soccer field to a yearround multi-use sports complex. The renovations consisted of two major improvements, each of which has dramatically improved the athletic physical plant for all CSU sports. The natural grass playing surface was removed in favor of a state-of-the-art FieldTurf artificial field. The second change became visible last December when a removable airsupported dome was placed over the field, creating an indoor practice facility for all sports for the winter months. The addition of FieldTurf was made necessary when women’s soccer was added at CSU, increasing the usage of the field to the point where it would be impossible to maintain the natural grass surface. FieldTurf, a revolutionary playing surface that combines the properties of natural grass with the durability of artificial turf, has been installed on almost 1,000 playing surfaces in 20 countries around the world. It is currently in use in over half of the National Football League stadiums and by almost 50 NCAA Division I institutions. It has been approved for play by FIFA, the world governing body for soccer, with some of the top professional teams around the world currently practicing and playing on it. The removable dome, a product of Yeadon Domes, covers the entire length and width of Krenzler Field, approximately 94,000 square feet, with a 60-foot ceiling. It is made of a heavy duty vinyl coated flame resistant polyester architectural fabric. The Krenzler Dome is a welcome addition, especially since the Intramural Sports Center, the only other indoor practice facility on campus, was demolished in the winter of 2005 to make way for the recently opened Student Recreation Center. The dome benefits more than just soccer.

The softball team hold preseason practices in the facility each winter with the space being large enough to set up a regulation softball field. The size of the field also makes it possible to set up an indoor driving range for the golf teams along with batting cages and pitchers mounds for softball. The renovation of Krenzler is the first step in the construction of CSU’s Varsity Village, a concentration of university athletic facilities interwoven with new residential living spaces between E. 19th and E. 24th streets along the northern edge of campus. Future plans call for the addition of an on-campus baseball field, the relocation of Viking Field, the home of CSU softball, and the reconfiguring of the Malaga Tennis Center. Built at an original cost of $1.9 million, Krenzler Field became the first university outdoor athletic venue when it was dedicated on October 17, 1985. Designed and built specifically for varsity soccer, the field is nestled at the northwest corner of the campus against a background of downtown skyscrapers. The complex includes permanent seating for 1,680 and an electric scoreboard and clock, plus a field building housing two 36-person team locker rooms, a referee locker room, a training room, a storage room and

public restroom facilities. The lighting system provides 50 footcandles of illumination. The facility is named in honor of Judge Alvin I. Krenzler, a long-time supporter of the university. Krenzler served on the CSU Board of Trustees from July 1967 until August 1970, leaving the board when he became judge of the Eighth District Court of Appeals. He retired as judge of the United States District Court, Northern District of Ohio in 1992. It was Krenzler’s generous contribution - which at the time was the largest single gift ever made to CSU athletics - that made completion of the facility possible. Judge Krenzler, along with numerous soccer alumni, were in attendance when the field was rededicated before the doubleheader on October 2, 2005. On that day, the Viking women hosted Green Bay while the CSU men followed against Butler.

Ali Kazemaini H e a d C o a ch // N i n t h S e a s o n When Ali Kazemaini took over the Cleveland State soccer program in 2006, he inhertied a team with low expectations following a winless 2005 season. In a short period, Kazemaini has been able to turn the program around, winning at least eight games five times since taking over at CSU. Kazemaini’s best season with the Vikings came in 2012 when the team won 11 games and was able to bring home the Horizon League Tournament title, helping Cleveland State qualify for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1980. In his 22 years as a head coach Ali Kazemaini has compiled a record of 238-151-31, including 62 victories at Cleveland State in total, and a 33-15-6 record at Krenzler Field over the past six seasons. Last season, the Vikings finished with an overall record of 8-12, while finishing fifth in the conference with a 3-4 mark. In what could be described as an overall up-and-down season, the peak of the season came in October when the Vikings rattled off a three game winning streak against Green Bay, Bowling Green, and Detroit. The 2012 season saw the Vikings finish 11-6-3 (4-1-2), placing second in the Horizon League regular season standings before taking home the league’s tournament title with a 2-0 win over Loyola. The team outscored its opponent 29-18 on the season, including four games of at least three goals. Taking over the winless CSU program beginning with the 2006 season, Kazemaini returned immediate results. Coach Kazemaini led the Vikings to the largest turnaround among all NCAA Division I programs, ending the season with a 6-10-2 record. During the 2007 season, the Vikings finished with a record of 3-7-2 in matches decided by one goal or less, indicating they were better than their 3-12-3 overall record. In 2008, the Vikings turned the corner, finishing with a league mark of 8-3-1 and flexed their muscle at home, going 7-3-1 at Krenzler Field. The strong season finished The Kazemaini Coaching File with an appearance in the Horizon League Championship match, the first since 2002. At John Carroll (1992-2005) Kazemaini came back to Cleveland State after 14 successful seasons as head coach at John Carroll University. Year W L T Kazemaini took over at JCU in 1992 and the Blue Streaks immediately benefited, 1992 15 2 1 going 15-2-1 and winning the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship in his first 1993 17 3 0 season. The accomplishments quickly piled up.
