VOLLEYBALL CSU, who enters the week on a 10-match win streak,
will close out the regular season this Thursday (Nov. 8), hosting Youngstown State at 7:00 p.m. Last weekend the Vikings notched victories over Wright State (3-0) and Valparaiso (3-2), clinching the 2012 Horizon League Regular Season Title. This marks the second time that CSU has earned the regular season title, also doing so in 2009. CSU will now host the league championship, which runs from Friday, November 16 through Sunday, November 18. Kara Koch led the Vikings with 35 kills and 27 digs last weekend, posting double-doubles in both matches. Jackie Dabbelt and Kerry Winchester each tallied 19 kills against Wright State and Valparaiso, while Marie Frease notched 16 and Maggie Hannon added 13. Amanda Medvetz recorded 25 digs in both matches.
WRESTLING CSU returns to action
at the Nothern Illinois Duals on Saturday (Nov. 10) with four matches. The Vikings open against South Dakota State at 10:00 a.m. before facing the host Huskies at 12:00 p.m. A match with Tiffin follows at 2:00 p.m. before CSU takes on Indiana at 4:00 p.m. to conclude the duals. The Vikings opened the 2012-13 season at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 3) with seven grapplers earning multiple wins at the event. Matt Donohoe led all Vikings with a second place showing at 157 pounds, going 3-1. Riley Shaw placed third at heavyweight, going 4-1.
CROSS COUNTRY Cleveland State heads to Madison, Wis. to take part in
the 2012 season at the NCAA Regional meet on Friday (Nov. 9) beginning at 1:00 p.m. This year’s regional meet will take place at the Zimmer Championship Course. Two weeks ago, CSU competed in the Horizon League Championshi with five runners recording personal-best times. The group was led by Tori Holt who finished in a time of 19:13, followed by Maddie Korak (20:34), Angela Kirila (20:56), Ashley Berlin (21:14) and Megan O’Keefe (21:36). As a team the Vikings placed ninth overall at the league meet.

Men’s Basketball Kicks Off 2012-13 Season The Cleveland State men’s basketball team opens the 2012-13 season this
week, starting with an exhibition game against Malone on Tuesday (Nov. 6) at 7:00 p.m. The regular season begins with the Vikings hosting Grambling on Friday (Nov. 9) at 7:30 p.m. in the John McLendon Game. CSU features a young roster this year with nine freshmen and sophomores. Only one starter returns from last year’s 22-11 squad that advanced to the NIT, marking CSU’s fourth postseason bid in the last five years. However, the Vikings do welcome back seven letterwinners, including sophomore Anton Grady who was a Preseason All-Horizon League second team pick and was mentioned by several national publications as a potential “breakout player” this year. Senior Tim Kamczyc will provide leadership for the young squad. He has started 74 straight games and averaged 9.1 points per game a season ago.
MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING The Vikings return to action on Saturday (Nov. 10) when CSU travels to St. Bonaventure for a 1:00 p.m. dual meet. CSU traveled to Miami (OH) on Saturday (Nov. 3), earning a 150-150 tie with the Redhawks. It was the second time in three years that the teams swam to a tie. Berry Thompson was a three-time winner for CSU, taking the 50 and 100 freestyles. Mark deSwardt won the 500 and 1,000 freestyles, while Al Shillito claimed the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke.

Senior Shalonda Winton was named to the preseason all-league first team, after earning first team all-league honors and all-defensive team honors last year. Cleveland State had two exhibition contests last week, defeating Walsh University (83-67) and Ursuline College (6633). Winton led the Vikings during their exhibition contests, combining for 41 points and 21 rebounds. Sophomore Cori Coleman added 24 points during both contests, while Honesty King scored 19 points.
MEN’S SOCCER Cleveland State opens

The Vikings will play the winner of a first round match from Tuesday. The Vikings closed the regular season on Saturday (Nov. 3) with a 1-1 draw at Green Bay, extending CSU’s unbeaten streak to seven straight matches (5-0-2). Zach Ellis-Hayden scored for the Vikings in the 68th minute to knot the game off an assist from Admir Suljevic. The Vikings closed the regular season with a 9-5-3 mark and were second in the Horizon League with 14 points, going 4-1-2.

CSU travels to St. Bonaventure for a 1:00 p.m. dual meet. CSU was last in action on Oct. 27, defeating both Niagara (195-48) and Gannon (189-48) in Busbey Natatorium to improve to 3-2 this season. Joanna Olsson won both the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly, while Alice Sommerville won both the 200 breaststroke and 50 freestyle. Jamie Puls had one victory and three top-three finishes at the meet.

The Cleveland State volleyball team ran its win streak to 10 straight matches with two wins at home last week, clinching the Horizon League regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in next weekend’s league tournament. The Vikings, who are 20-6 overall and 12-1 in league play, have not lost a match since Sept. 28. The two wins over the weekend allowed the Vikings to clinch a 20-win season.
