VOLLEYBALL The Vikings will hit the road for the last time during league play this weekend, traveling to Chicago, Ill. for two contests. CSU will first face UIC at 8:00 p.m. EST on Friday, October 26 and will then face Loyola at 4:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, October 27. CSU extended its win streak to six matches last weekend, with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Milwaukee and Green Bay. The Vikings enter the week with an overall record of 16-6 and an 8-1 mark in league play. CSU continues to lead the league standings after five weeks of play, with Loyola sitting second with a record of 7-2. During Saturday’s contest against Green Bay, Kara Koch became CSU’s all-time leader in career attack attempts, as she enters the week with 3,982. Koch also ranks second with 1,445 career kills and 1,609.5 career points. She continues to lead the league averaging 4.73 kills per set, while Marie Frease also leads the league with a .355 hitting percentage.
MEN’S TENNIS Cleveland State concluded its fall season last weekend,
participating in the ITA Midwest Regional. CSU had six singles players in action and four doubles teams. Jorg van der Vloet represented CSU in the main singles draw, while Matt Ford, Joe VanMeter, Niklas Jonsson, Matt Kuelker and Ali Shabib all competed in the qualifying bracket. All five Vikings picked up first round victories in the qualifying bracket, while Ford was the only one to also earn a win in his second round match. Two doubles teams also picked up opening round wins at the regional, with Jay Jones and van der Vloet and Shabib and Jonsson each notching victories. The other two doubles teams for CSU were Kuelker/Ford and VanMeter/Marks.

Cross Country Set For Horizon League Championship After a two-week break from competition, the Vikings will return to the course
this weekend for the 2012 Horizon League Championship. This year’s championship is hosted by Milwaukee and will take place on Saturday, October 27. The women’s 5K race is slated for a 12:00 p.m. EST start. Last season the Vikings placed fourth at the league meet, their highest finish in program history. Katie Webb and Tori Holt are the only returners that earned points for CSU at the 2011 league championship, and have been the first two Vikings to finish in three races this season. So far this season, nine Vikings have recorded personal-best times, including Holt (19:18), Webb (19:53) and Ashley Lydic (19:54) who each notched sub 20-minute 5K’s for the first time in their careers.
MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Cleveland State men’s swimming and diving team will take on four teams this upcoming week, two on the road, followed by two at home. They will first travel to Columbus, Ohio where they will take on both Ohio State and Kenyon Friday night, before then taking on Gannon and Niagara at home Saturday at noon. The team got off to a strong start in league competition this past weekend, taking down Green Bay 140-100. The Vikings were able to dominate from the start of the meet, winning all but two WOMEN’S SOCCER events, the 1-meter dive and 400 IM. Madeline Kaminski led the Vikings by tying for 20th place with rounds of 81-78 (159), while Ariel Sparrow (83-77 (160)) and Allyson Hackman (80-80 (160)) tied for 25th place. CSU’s fall schedule was highlighted by the Cleveland State Invitational (Sept. 24-25), when the Vikings finished as runner-up.

The Vikings are coming off a week with just one game, a thrilling 2-1 home overtime win over Milwaukee Saturday night. After no goals for 88 plus minutes, CSU grabbed the lead on a Cristian Arboleda goal with under two minutes to play. Despite the little time, Milwaukee was able to bounce back with a goal to tie it with just 13 seconds left to play. Fortunately for the home team forward Admir Suljevic was able to send the Vikings home happy as he knocked in a free kick just over two minutes into overtime for the victory.

The Vikings had three swimmers help lead the way for the win, with each winning three events. Those three swimmers with three first place finishes included Joanna Olsson, Alexandra Johansson, and Alice Sommerville. The win for the Vikings was only the third time in program history that they have beaten Green Bay.
WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings wrapped up their fall schedule last weekend, participating in the ITA Midwest Regional. Kara Sherwood was the lone Viking to pick up a win in the qualifying draw, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory in her opening round contest. Alex Bush and Alex Power also competed for the Vikings in the qualifying draw, with Bush picking up a consolation match victory. Sherwood and Bush formed the first doubles team for CSU, while Nicole Janek and Power formed the second. Despite two hard-fought matches, both tandems fell in the first round of the doubles main draw.

Suljevic led the Vikings to a 2-1 overtime victory against Milwaukee last weekend, as CSU earned a crucial three points in the league standings. After going into overtime tied at 1-1, Suljevic was able to put away a free kick in the 93rd minute for the gamewinner. The goal was his fourth of the season and he now leads the Vikings with 10 points. Suljevic is tied for fifth in the league with his four goals, while he also ranks sixth with 10 points.
