VOLLEYBALL The Vikings will close out their three-match roadswing
with a single match this weekend, traveling to Youngstown State on Friday (Oct. 12) at 7:00 p.m.. Cleveland State enters the week with a 13-6 record (5-1 HL). Last weekend the Vikings posted a 2-0 league record, defeating Valparaiso and Wright State. CSU and Loyola enter the week with matching 5-1 Horizon League records, sitting at the top of the standings. As a team, CSU leads the league in hitting percentage (.247), kills (14.35 per set) and assists (13.33 per set), while the Vikings also rank second in digs (17.74 per set). Individually, Marie Frease leads the league with a .345 hitting percentage and Kara Koch is tops in the league averaging 4.88 kills per set.
WOMEN’S SOCCER CSU hits the road for two key Horizon League matches
this week, starting with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Youngstown State on Wednesday (Oct. 10). The Vikings then head to Detroit on Sunday (Oct. 14) at 1:00 p.m. The Vikings are 5-8 overall and 1-2 in league play after winning two matches last week. CSU defeated Green Bay, 1-0, in double overtime and cruised past Francis Marion, 4-1. Against Green Bay, Jaime Avona headed in a corner kick from Vickie Havas in the 102nd minute for a Golden Goal. Avona came back with a goal and assist in the win over Francis Marion to move into a tie for the team-lead with five goals. She is also third in the league with 12 points. Shea Levi, Kelcey Fischer and Brittany Koester added goals against the Patriots.
WOMEN’S GOLF Cleveland State returns to action for its second to last
event of the fall when the Vikings compete at the Butler Bulldog Invitational on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 8-9). CSU was last in action when the Vikings finished second at the CSU Invitational at Pine Hills G.C. on Sept. 24-25. The Vikings shot rounds of 320-313, with the final round 313 just one shot of tying the school-record for lowest round. Ariel Sparrow tied the 36-hole school-record with rounds of 73-79 (152) to finish second, while Madeline Kaminski was fourth at 155 (80-75). Shelly Ford tied for 14th place at 161 (83-78) and Micaela Cronin and Allyson Hackman tied for 31st place.

Swimming and Diving Open 2012-13 Season The CSU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams open the 2012-
13 season when the squads compete at the Dennis Stark Relays at Notre Dame on Friday (Oct. 12) beginning at 5:00 p.m. Both teams are coming off outstanding seasons with the women finishing a program-best second place at last year’s Horizon League Championship. The CSU men scored 726.5 points at last year’s league championship, the most team points scored by the Vikings since CSU won the team title in 2006. It also allowed the Vikings to finish second at last year’s league championship. When it was all said and done, 16 of the 42 events were won by the Vikings - eight by the men and eight by the women - at the league championship.
MEN’S SOCCER MEN’S GOLF CSU concludes its fall season when the Vikings com- The Vikings return to Horizon League action with two matches this week, hosting pete in the UC Bearcat Invitationa on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 8-9). The Vikings finished second at the CSU Invitational on Oct. 1-2 at Canterbury G.C, carding rounds of 297-293-284 to finish three shots behind Oakland. Jon Riemer placed fifth overall, firing a 54-hole total of 215 (68-78-69), while Andrew Bailey (T-6th), Michael Klaric (T-10th) and Michael Balcar (12th) all had top-15 finishes.
Wright State on Tuesday (Oct. 9) at 7:00 p.m. and heading to Valparaiso for an 8:00 p.m. EST contest on Saturday (Oct. 13). CSU enters the week at 5-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the league. CSU was in action just one time last week, rolling to a 4-0 win over Belmont on Wednesday (Oct. 3) at Krenzler Field. Cazz Warren scored a pair of goals, while Jacob Naumann added his first goal of the season and Mike Derezic scored his second of the season. Cameron Eisses, Cristian Arboleda and Alfonso Sandoval recorded assists. Brad Stuver made six saves to record his fifth shutout of the season.
WOMEN’S TENNIS Cleveland State will have two weeks off from compe-
tition, as they prepare for the ITA Midwest Regional which is set to begin on Thursday, October 18. This year’s regional will take place in Champaign, Ill. and will be hosted by the University of Illinois. Last weekend the Vikings participated in the Spartan Invitational, which was hosted by Michigan State. Mengdi Liu led the Vikings on the weekend, as she advanced to the final match of the Draw F Singles bracket and reached the semifinals of the Draw C Doubles bracket. Ellen Folkers reached the backdraw finals of the D singles bracket, and the duo of Alex Power and Maria Lazaris advanced to the backdraw finals of the B doubles draw.
CROSS COUNTRY The Vikings will compete in their final tune-up before
the Horizon League Championship this weekend, traveling to Wilmington, Ohio for the WC Fall Classic. The women’s collegiate race is set for a 4:30 p.m. start on Friday, October 12. Last weekend CSU competed in the Walt Disney World Classic, placing 14th. Tori Holt was CSU’s top finisher for the fifth straight race, placing 18th overall in a time of 19:49. The trio of Ashley Lydic (63rd), Katie Webb (68th) and Maddie Korak (87th) were once again the next three Vikings to finish, while Megan O’Keefe, Angela Kirila, Amanda Kalain, Rachel Niemi and Ashley Berlin also competed in the race.

Avona had two goals, both game-winners, and an assist to help the Vikings win two matches last week. In a 1-0 double overtime win over Green Bay on Wednesday (Oct. 3), Avona headed home the game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 102nd minute. She came back in Saturday’s (Oct. 6) 4-1 win over Francis Marion to record a goal and an assist. Avona moved into second place in the Horizon League with five goals and into third place in the league with 12 points this year.
